Podcast 11: The Machine | w Lizzie O'Shea & Ben Eltham

Dear Patrons

A very brief post just to send you the link to our latest podcast, a companion for our Honest Government Ad about  "The Machine".

I hope you enjoy this conversation with two of my favourite political and social commentators in Australia: human/digital-rights lawyer Lizzie O'Shea and journalist Ben Eltham - who agreed to come on the podcast to talk about the CovidSafe tracing app and the economic bailout package.

There is just so much bullshit and sensationalism everywhere, and I just find Lizzie and Ben's approach to explaining these topics to be well, quite therapeutic. I hope you do too.

This is Part 1 of the podcast about The Machine - and it focuses on Australia (which we've neglected in our last couple of videos).

In Part 2, we'll be taking a more international approach to discussing the state of The Machine in the Coronavirus era - and I'm very excited to have a very special guest lined up.

Ok, I'm going to sign off now - but not before wishing all the mothers and grandmothers amongst you a warmhearted HAPPY MOTHERS DAY from all of us here at the Juice Media.

We'll be spending the day spoiling Lucy, who has been such an amazing mother to Luca for the past two years, and now also Juno.

And for any of you who may have lost a mother; who are losing a mother (something I am familiar with), or who have never had a mother - know that you are in our thoughts too <3

WIth love,
Giordano & family

I think that Giordano's point about "When do we start talking about what kind of post-covid world we want?" is very pertinent because like Lizzie said, the powers-at-be don't sleep, and they are continually shaping the present to conform to their vision of the future. I am sure they live by the old adage, "Never let a good crisis go to waste."

PS - I can imagine a sort of human dogem-cars, where people keep bumping into each other because they're so busy looking at the app that they can't notice social distance. :)

Hi - the other comments about the connection between effects of global warming and pandemic reminds me that in 2018 the World Economic Forum put out a risks report showing the 'six degrees of separation' sort of connections between all the different sorts of risks - how over-exploitation of the planet is connected to pandemics, and these to economic factors and so forth. I thought you guys might be interested in the fact that the politicians' habit of presenting 'the economy' as if it were in opposition to human health, or care for the planet is ... how shall I put it... "ill-informed".

I'm not normally one for podcasts, but I put this on while cooking and quite enjoyed it. Thanks!

So glad to hear that - podcasts are best for listening whilst doing something else, I find. I love walking and listening to a good podcast :)

Hey Giordano, once again, very good. It's very pertinent and timely. Two very good guests. I learnt a lot. I was particularly taken by Ben's point about "what the economy is for". This is probably my best takeaway from this. Once again, thank you.

That's a very good take away message - thanks Willa!

Thanks guys, yet another interesting and educational discussion. I'm glad that you mentioned flattening the curve in relation to the encroaching climate crisis. I think it is a very pertinent point that yes, people are now familiar with the how and why of taking early action is critical in preventing run-away exponentiation crisis. All the best, Pete

Thanks for tuning in Peter! Yeah I'm fascinated by the lessons Covid19 has taught us which are total game changers for the climate movement. More about this in the next podcast :)
