[PREVIEW] Quiet Australians | Honest Government Ad
Dear Patrons,
Here is the preview of our next Honest Government Ad, in which we turn our attention to how the Federal Government has well and truly embarked down a path of creeping authoritarianism - from prosecuting whitsleblowers and raiding journalists to threatening to outlaw climate protests and boycotts - all packaged in a shiny bullshit slogan: "Quiet Australians".
So I thought we could do with some honesty from our Government about where we're inevitably heading with all this....
This HGA features both of our awesome actors, Zoë and Ellen.

ABC Ballarat has reported that an "anarchist" group has burned the PM in effigy to mark the anniversary of the Eureka Stockade. I'm conflicted. I agree with the right to protest, but I don't know if my feelings are so strong that I could participate in burning an effigy. Could the Juice Media patrons provide their views and hopefully I won't be such a fence sitter as a result :)

I feel like we're on the same page, Lynda! Personally, I wouldn't participate in such a protest either. But I am much more concerned at the thought of living in a society in which such a protest might be outlawed, than by the protest itself
"A quiet ABC where women don't swear". Presumably this is the Q&A with Mona Eltahawy? I personally cringed at that ep knowing full well what the majority response would be, which was not progressive at all. It wasn't about the swearing, just the general presentation and lack of any objective opposition. It makes me feel bad for feminism and LGBTQ - who are being ridiculed a lot from these things nowadays. Anyways... the rest sounds great (:
Yes, that's the reference. Funny you should say that: we actually we decided to take that line out because as you say it wasn't about swearing, and upon reflection it felt like it might distract from the overall message about the govt's drift towards authoritarianism. I am kind of hoping for a "How good is global warming?" shirt. And the whole 'quiet Australians' thing comes across to me as "we only like the citizens who STFU and do what they're told", to which I can only say "baaaa".
Great, love this and all your work. A question: is Julian Assange referenced at all in the video? I didn't hear mention of him in the script. You did a great piece on him earlier in the year - and in terms of the theme of creeping authoritarianism, whistleblowers, suppression of freedom of the press etc., his case as you know is extreme. You would have seen the recent letter from the 60 doctors demanding his immediate release on grounds of the serious deterioration of the state of his health, and also the UN Special Rapporteur finding that his prolonged indefinite and solitary detention amounts to torture. So much material for you to continue skewer the Australian, British and American governments - can't stress how important this is.
Thanks Nick. And yes, Assange is referenced in the visuals with the line "or thrown in jail to please our masters", along with the headline about his state of health. We're planning to make another HGA early next year when his first extradition hearing will take place.

I am grateful you've included those who have ended their lives, this is important as Ausgov both sides are avoiding suicide talk unless its for political gain, and combined, robodebt, cdc and cdp have killed over 2060 people. Had those people died from terror attack it would be national headlines..but sadly democide on the poor is still "cool and normal". Love your work.
