IDSG Bonus 30: In Cold Blood

In this long-awaited (semi) return to form, Jack and I discuss the 1966 "non fiction novel" In Cold Blood, its 1968 film adaptation, and the two films from the mid 2000s (Infamous and Capote) about its author and the circumstances surrounding its writing. We also discuss the various elements of the crime depicted, the murder of a family of four in isolated Holcomb, Kansas, in November 1959.

We are considering doing more true crime books/documentaries in future bonus episodes, so please let us know how you like this one.

In personal news, I am nearly recovered from my recent surgery and so should be able to complete the setup of my new recording space in the next couple of weeks, which will mean that regular mainline I Don't Speak German episodes will likely follow soon as well.

Loved the episode! In terms of speculation on Capote wanting to hasten the deaths of the killers, it could be argued that he wanted the definitive account, and if he published prior to their deaths, someone at some point could interview them on the book’s accuracy. Kind of a moot point since the hastening death thing is ahistorical anyways

I've seen all the films in question, but have yet to get around to the book. I enjoyed this conversation and found it fairly enlightening. This is officially my favourite true crime podcast now. Ignore the fact that I don't listen to any other ones.
