Bonus Episode 20: Slaughterhouse Five

In which Jack and I talk both about Kurt Vonnegut's great novel (1968) and (briefly) its film adaptation (1972). This is technically the June bonus (since we released Primary Colors as a full episode) and we're going to try to get a bonus on In Cold Blood out before the end of the month.

I apologize for the relative dearth of content right now. I've been dealing with some mental health shit, which ironically affects my ability to record far more than it affects my ability to keep tracking Nazis. I am still working on this project for dozens of hours per week, and I cannot thank you enough for your continued support (which makes up the bulk of my income right now).

Enjoy the episode. I think it tells you a lot about how I came to do this work.

The series on the Media Hauntological is actually my favorite IDSG-related content (no offense, Daniel). Slaughterhouse Five was one of the things that turned me toward lefty politics as a teen, and this was a great convo.

I originally signed up for the Doctor Who podcasts, so the antifascism has all been bonus already and the obscure media stuff is a bracing return to form. I also think Jack twists praise around to self-deprecation because of anxiety (and probably also Englishness, but it's the anxiety I'm personally familiar with) but that's also part of the package so keep that up too. 😉

Gotta echo Thomas here. The bonus content is cool but I'm here for the fash reporting. Take care of yourself.

You touched on your guilt about not getting bonus episodes out, and I was glad to hear that you both recognized your audience isn’t going to abandon you because you miss such self-imposed deadlines. Obviously I can only speak for myself, but I want you both to keep yourselves healthy and able to keep your eyes on the bad guys. Don’t stress too much about Patreon bonus episodes, which I’ll happily listen to, but won’t demand in exchange for payment. Keep up the great work!

I love basically all the content you guys create: 90s movies, Sherlock Holmes, Nazis, sf, it's all good. I turned forty this year, but I was lucky enough to encounter Vonnegut as a teenager, and even did a high school term paper on Sirens of Titan, Slaughterhouse-Five, and Cat's Cradle, the latter of which I'd personally rate as his masterpiece among masterpieces. It's a rare and wonderful author who speaks so directly to teenagers, but remains as great and impactful for adult readers. I had thought I read somewhere that allthough his name came from Sturgeon, Trout was more directly inspired by Philip K. Dick?
