IDSG Bonus 49: Digger (2026)

Well, I saw Digger on opening night, and I knew I was going to have to talk about it. Jack sourced the film for himself and I think while we disagree a bit on the overall aesthetic quality of the film, we both find it interesting to talk about (and I'd agree with him that talking about the movie is substantially more fun than watching it).

This is a film that absolutely rewards going in spoiler-free, and we don't get into spoiler territory for the first twenty minutes or so (and we let you know when we start to spoil the film) so if you want to get a taste of our opinions before deciding whether or not to see it, you have the opportunity to do so.

This one will be going up for everyone sometime next week, but you get it early for being my Patron. Thanks as always, and don't worry, more substantive IDSG episodes are coming very soon.

I went and saw it earlier this week in a theater, it’s good. Also, the whole thing about “wait, why does it look like this” that Jack found confusing was one of the things I liked most about this movie. Having only seen the trailer and nothing else, I didn’t realize this was a puzzle movie, but I like movies like that when I think they’re done well, and this one very much was.

Were you just using “preindustrial” as like a shorthand for worse living standards all around? Because I think it’s possible stuff like readily available consumer goods and abundant food will be much less common in the future, but I’d be very surprised if climate collapse leads to anything resembling preindustrial civilization. Like for example I’d be very surprised if future humans ever don’t have computer technology, in spite of how awful things are for them otherwise

My theory about future depictions of Trump is actors are actually going to tone down Trump’s mannerism to avoid distracting from the drama. Like you get that sometimes with actors playing Nixon. Like Frank Langella gives Nixon much dignity and gravitas than the man actually had

I’m listening to this mainly so I can find out what this movie is actually about without having to actually see it
