It is definitely the sort of jingoistic piece like the 1812 overture and the Slavonic March that Tchaikovsky would have regarded as in the “fake and trashy” category…

So I think you might like Tchaikovsky’s Coronation March for Alexander III and maybe the Festival overture on the Danish anthem. Which he wrote for Dagmar and Alex. The coronation March is notable because it has the Danish anthem and the Russian anthem in counterpoint. Obviously the section with the Russian anthem was removed during the Soviet days.

This poor woman just seemed cursed. I’ve read a lot of Dagmar’s post-revolution correspondence and I feel like deep down she knew her family had been slaughtered, but after losing SO many people, it was the last straw and she couldn’t face it. Such a sad life for such a vibrant woman with so much promise.
