Gh⏐ Nurbs pattern ⏐ Grasshopper
In Series 03 Episode 03, we transition from our previous SubD exploration into the precise world of NURBS modeling. While SubD is fantastic for continuous, organic forms (and the render and post caption is a SubD), this episode focuses on a more precise geometry by driving patterns directly through surface control points.
In traditional industrial design and strict Class A surfacing, the golden rule is usually "less is more" using the lowest possible degree and point count to get perfectly relaxed, smooth surfaces, and in rhino that means pretty much relying on "Edge Surface" most of the time and as long as possible. But if we are building dense parametric patterns or need intentional, tight kinks, a higher point density can be exactly what we need.
We dive into the intentional flow of control points using higher point density to our advantage to create tight, deliberate kinks and complex interlocking patterns. By manipulating specific grids of points to explicitly drive curvature, we explore the kind of data structures required to build accurate geometry.
Download the project files below to test the toggle between responsive design mode and high-precision baking, and start applying these NURBS data structures to your own models. 👇
(I've also included the .blend scene for the final render.)
