Gh⏐ SubD pattern ⏐ Grasshopper
In Series 03 Episode 02, we cover a SubD workflow to apply parametric patterns directly onto SubD or mesh surfaces.
Organic Surface Generation
This definition functions as a practical tool for generating organic shapes. You can use the resulting geometry as a base shell to design around, or isolate a specific part of a model, apply the pattern, and merge it back together. This provides a straightforward way to iterate on textured concepts before exporting a final mesh. 🔄🧩
Understanding Surface Continuity
We also discuss the concept of surface continuity. While SubD geometry provides continuous curvature that works well for rendering and additive manufacturing, plus it is ideal to test concepts, it does lack the mathematical precision of NURBS surfaces for precision manufacturing (in some cases).
In the next video, we will introduce a similar tool but focused on NURBS and Class A surface concepts. If you are curious about this topic before then, this thread touches on G0, G1, G2, and G3 continuity: https://discourse.mcneel.com/t/understanding-g0-g2-g3-in-relation-to-curvature-combs-continuity/146065
Download the project files below, test the definition on different geometries, and drop the final meshes into your slicer. 👇
I've also added the .blend scene of the render below.
