Episode 13 - Sherlock Holmes (2009)

This week on Be Gay Solve Crimes, we thought it was about time we checked in on our Boy* in the Deerstalker**, and what better place to find him than Guy Ritchie's 2009 barroom brawl of a movie, Sherlock Holmes (2009), starring the acclaimed actor Robert Downey's acclaimed actor son.

Join us as Nova gets discombobulated by Hans Zimmer's piano abuse, Mia finally divulges her bedtime (so you can all stop asking now), and Lucy engages the deep librarian-mode in defence of a director who is so blokey that even his parents named him Some Dude.

If you want to hear more Be Gay Solve Crimes, you should sign up to our Patreon! For as little as £5 a month you can get access to a new bonus episode from us every fortnight as well as all our previous bonus episodes.

Join us next week for Black Coal Thin Ice (2014)!

Be Gay Solve Crimes are on Bluesky, where you can also find each of the team: November Kelly, Mia Mulder, and your local librarian Lucy, who writes all the music for the show.

CN: bpd, abuse, addiction I understand where the conflation of bpd and abusive behaviour is coming from, but as someone with a bpd diagnosis who's been in therapy for a long time, this always hurts and makes me afraid of disclosing my diagnosis. I won't lie that I have exhibited toxic behaviour in the past, but honestly mostly to myself, I kept most of my shit to myself which made my a bad partner for not communicating but I find it hard to describe as abusive. But I have been in abusive relationships and friendships, so I am very afraid of becoming that (which is probably why I just tried to bottle it all up inside). What I'm trying to say is: I understand your pain from experiencing abusive behaviour from people with bpd, I still would prefer people to emphasise the abusive part rather than the diagnosis part (same with abusive people who also struggle with addiction). A lot of abusive people might be diagnosed with bpd or have an addiction, but that doesn't mean everyone with bpd or an addiciton is abusive. I know that's not what you were trying to say, but I just keep hearing this sentiment more and more and it makes me worried for me and my loved ones who also struggle with bpd.

Whenever you do Jack the Ripper stuff, please look into the work of Hallie Rubenhold! She's an actual historian who specializes in the history of sex work and was able to conclusively demonstrate that the majority of the victims were rough sleepers, not prostitutes, and that the exception was probably actually killed by sex traffickers she'd previously escaped from. Linking the crimes at all is iffy and is mostly due to a letter sent to Scotland Yard that was almost certainly a hoax.

Of the two Ritchie Holmes films, I always much preferred the second Game of Shadows' attempt at an espionage thriller. It's undeniably complete trash, but its a comfy easy trash that I have a nostalgia for

If you try to evade the entry fee for St Paul's by saying you want to pray they corral you into a small uninteresting area guarded by zombie vergers and they also filter you out quickly after services. You've got to be pretty sneaky tbh

Off topic, but is anybody watching Lanterns? I would be really curious to hear what BGSC thinks of it because 1) it's a detective show, and 2) neither lead character wants to be a Green Lantern. They are each at various stages of realizing this. They have each been forced into the role against their will for different reasons, and the one time we see Jordan in the costume, it doesn't fit and he looks incredibly uncomfortable. Later, he has a great explanation for why he dresses all shlubby and does not wear "the uniform" anymore.

oooo I have relevant knowledge! The instrument Nova referenced in the soundtrack is a hammered dulcimer – between this and Game of Thrones film/TV composers got really horny for the dulcimer around this time, a trend which my dulcimer-containing band (Feorin) squarely failed to take advantage of.

"Is this new TNO content? I thought they only took stuff out." Fuckin lmao. I remember the glory days of Atlantropa and John Glenn sending the US to Mars. The devs are dead set on making the mod "more realistic", and one day they'll just end up deleting the whole thing because "a Nazi victory is unrealistic".

I don't know if this is too obvious a suggestion, or too obscure, or just otherwise too terrible but Murder By Death is a murder mystery parody movie with a star-studded cast (including Peter Falk, Peter Sellers, and Truman Capote), it used to be one of my favorite comedies when I was young and stupid, it is WILDLY offensive for which I apologize but like probably in a way that will give you lots of fuel to work with. And I don't think I've ever heard it mentioned anywhere here so now I am. (Discombobulate)

I might have mentioned it before when the subject of Holmes's deliberate ignorance of astronomy but I always thought it would be funny if they turned up at a murder at an observatory and it turned out that the orbits of the planets was a major plot point of the case. Just because I can imagine Watson wearing the biggest shit eating grin the whole time because Holmes was wrong about something.

Random thoughts: Couldn't not bite the early bait:- You >can< silence a revolver, the Russians have managed it twice. Nagant M1895 and OTs-38 Stechkin. You need to seal the gap between the cylinder and the barrel. Not sure how the Stechkin does it though, looks weird. Huge faff though, and kind of defeats the point of revolvering in the first place. Last movie I saw with my dad in the cinema with my dad was Batman or The Last Crusade. Saw both. Whichever one came out second I guess? Batman notable for being the first 12 certificate and my dad and older brother felt compelled to sneak me in past the ticket bod because I was ten or eleven or something. Crime of the century that. One inevitable recommendation, if you develop a taste for Victorian London, there's a show called The Year Of The Rabbit. Matt Berry starring as Detective Inspector Rabbit. Show was brutally cut off at one season because Covid buggered everything up, but he went straight off to do What We Do In The Shadows so I'm not too upset. Whole thing probably fits in two and a half hours. It's so good.

M
Meonlights · August 19, 2026

Not to defend ACD but in the original, the watch makes a bit more sense. It's wound with a key where you have to poke a tiny hole with a metal pin about the thickness of a parclip, so there are some deep scratches where the owner slipped. Plus it was marked several times by a pawn shop. So Holmes deduces that the item is important enough to keep well and buy back, but also that the owner is desperate enough for money to pawn it. Iirc he also deduces that the owner is a gambler. When he loses he pawns the watch and when he wins he buys it out.

A
Australian Estuary Pirate · August 19, 2026

I'm pretty sure the sound that was identified as a prepared piano was actually a cimbalom, a kind of eastern European hammered dulcimer. It's associated with Romani and Jewish music, and therefore often used to give a kind of Bohemian vibe. Sherlock Holmes has always been a stupid person's idea of a smart person, Guy Ritchie just lent into it. (That's not to say it's for stupid people, because sometimes you're in the mood for a stupid smart person thing - just as sometimes you're in the mood for a smart person stupid thing and all the variations thereof.) Holmes's in-universe so-called "deductive" reasoning is a clumsy version of abductive reasoning that basically comes down to child reasoning and guessing. Yes, even the clever versions. Also, the prevalence of Sherlock Holmes is one of the biggest causes of autism misinformation, specifically where it makes you into a super-detective but also makes you an arsehole (due in part to copyright bullshit, because capitalism causes almost all problems, and the ones it doesn't cause it exacerbates.)

F
Frank Leonard · August 19, 2026

Oh shit, dulcimer does actually make more sense. For some reason I was stuck on harpsichord but that's completely different sounding.

Aw man, talk about a blast from the past. I have not seen this movie since it came out but I remember loving it. Wanna see what else I remember before starting. Mark Strong plays like a cultist or something who fakes his death and resurrection by faking his hanging and then having his crypt made out of glue so he can break out. He plans to gas parliament but gives his followers the antidote so they'll think they miraculously survived. He kills some guy by poisoning his bathtub and kills another guy by dripping oil on him in the rain so that when the guy tries to shoot him he sets himself on fire. Mark Strong then gets hung for real in his fight with Sherlock and he falls of London Bridge. Also there's a scene where Rachel McAdams(!) as Irene Adler drugs Sherlock and leaves him handcuffed naked to her bed. And I remember being so pissed in the sequel when she died basically offscreen right at the start. What a waste. Anyway, haven't seen it since I was a kid in 2009(?) when it came out so interested to find how much I remember. Might explain a bit.

I started reading the books because of this movie. Pretty sure in the very first book, he establishes holmes as a singlestick fighter (not related to bartitsu) and a boxer and possibly even a swordsman? The action was there from the beginning. I think I've watched this movie once, and the sequel a dozen times. I watched the second movie before discovering breadchewb so I didn't know what anarchism was. I was not young. I was in my 20s probably. Florida public school education thank you Inventing a musical instrument that plucks piano strings. Turns out the harpsichord already existed, but I arrived at it parasocially
