[BONUS] Episode L - Rear Window (1954)

On this week's bonus episode of Be Gay Solve Crimes, we're getting voyeuristic about it Alfred Hitchcock-style with the curtain-twitching classic Rear Window (1954), featuring simultaneously the best dressed and worst dressed arm-chair sleuths we've yet seen.

Join us as we give ourselves Grace Kelly dysphoria, Mia comes out swinging on behalf of Team "Rear Window Is Bad", Nova talks us through what goes into her perfect Jimmy Stewart Impression, and Lucy finally introduces herself properly after all this time.

Be Gay Solve Crimes are on Bluesky, where you can also find each of the team: November Kelly, Mia Mulder, and your local librarian Lucy, who writes all the music for the show.

Join us next time for Sherlock Holmes (2009)!

I kinda wonder if "Bad Day at Black Rock" counts as a detective film, Spencer Tracy is definitely trying to solve a murder, and it's even modestly anti-racist. Some real "that guys" in it too.

To answer to a question from the QnA episode is that the Duck You Don't Meet is the mayor of the jungle.

When you said "next week we're doing Robert Downey Jr..." my ears perked up and for a brief, beautiful moment I thought we were gonna get some Kiss Kiss Bang Bang coverage, but alas. His Sherlock Holmes is good too, of course...

Shoutout to Jimmy Stewart, he might not look like much, but that man had an incredible, irresistible desire to kill Nazis. Not many noted actors dropped everything to join up in WW2, and even fewer of those that did presented themselves to a borderline suicidal branch of the military just for the pure expediency of sating their antifascist bloodlust. So fierce was Jimmy Stewart's desire to end fascism by personally turning every German into hunks of meat scattered over a wide area that he joined the sweaty American version of Bomber Command so he could get at Germany before the Red Army did, and fuck shit up while it was all new and shiny. Genuinely, incredibly brave man. Those American bombers were >dogshit<. And he was running those missions long before they'd figured out that they needed a fighter escort. I suspect that might have been a not inconsiderable part of his charm, especially in person, and especially at a time when he was emblematic of the sort of understated heroes who turned the industrial heartland of the Third Reich into a moonscape.

Incredible buildup to the "a psycho from the TV show Alfred Hitchcock presents"

Back in the day on Nevermind the Buzzcocks there was a running gag that the only impression that he could do was Bernard Manning. Didn't matter who he was trying, Barry White to Liz Windsor, it all came out Manning, lol.

i used to work as a light tech at a very light output limited stage, so in order to preserve some room for actual adjustments, whenever direction asked for "more red" or whatever i just set that channel to zero und raised it back to the previous value. everyone always commended me for the great job i did.

We went on an antique hunting date for my birthday and I got an almost 100 year old copy of a Nancy Drew book with some almost 100 year old doodles in y'all's honor

Misread that as 'antique hurling date' and thought it was some new kind of rage room designed to piss off Daily Mail readers.

Calling a flash bulb "the un-milked magnesium" is an A++ joke that deserved more than it got.

The scene where Raymond Burr realizes who's been watching him and stares directly into the camera is so fucking good. Both LBJ and the audience have been watching everyone in the apartment this whole time with complete immunity, only to have it suddenly turn on us and make us the subject of another predators gaze. It's really effective.

I don't know if they technically had paramedics in America in the 1950s I think that started with Freedom House Ambulance Service in 1967.

This is one of the most Film Student movies ever made, and I would know, they made us watch this in two separate classes.

This kept reminding me of Peeping Tom which isn't a detective film so much as a psychological horror but it's an interesting inversion of the voyeur protagonist photographer and their proximity to murder.

Between Rear Window and Vertigo, I kind of wonder whether "beautiful women pining for fuckass Jimmy Stewart" was a Hitchcock thing, or just a Jimmy Stewart thing in general. I'm absolutely not curious enough to find out, though.

It strikes me as secretly genius to use the letter system for your bonus episodes. Because they come out every 2 weeks, you'll use a complete alphabet every year since beginning, so every Z serves as your podcast-anniversary! Then you move on to A-A, A-B, A-C for season/year 2! Good puppy toy! Very clever!

I think Christopher Reeve did a remake of this after his accident. That might be interesting to see as a disability advocate.

I'm glad we got the proper defenition of flense. November clearly meant flayed. Anyway Vernor Vinge's Fire Upon the Deep has an important character called Flenser.

A
Andrew Dunn · August 12, 2026

Who else learned flensing after reading that one anti-bullying children's book from the 1990s where the main character joined in the mocking of the one girl for being fat and then someone started making fun of the main character

Thanks for warning that someone was gonna hate on this movie, now I’m afraid I gotta skip it. Please don’t hate its remake (body double)

If you want to add more Sydney Greenstreet, he did play Nero Wolfe in a radio show version of that detective.

I believe they were called "whale tails", actually, and they were one of the many awful parts of 2000s fashion.
