What if instead of a ouija board, it was a weeaboo board? Then it would be different.

Obliterating the ego is a good thing regardless.

Well, as is often the case with KJB and now BGSC I'd never seen or even heard of this movie and halfway into the episode I went "you know, that sounds REALLY GOOD, I should watch that movie". So I stopped the pod and watched the movie, and thanks to you three for showing me one good, if profoundly strange, movie.

not really relevant to this film, but in my sick and feverish state all I could think about is the bad movie the adventures of ford fairlane rock and roll detective.

Such an excellent episode. My ex loved Pynchon & PTA, but from this awkward film-bro lens that never made sense to me. I'm fascinated now, thank you!!!

the video essayist broey deschanel has an interesting video on this exact phenomenon that you may enjoy :)

Gender aside, perfectly diagnosing what's wrong with the world and how events are going to unfold only to realise that you're completely powerless to do anything to influence it is definitely a stage in my evolution as a leftist activist. I think that's related to Nova's point about access. Insight is essentially but without influence it's not of much practical use. If your inside the system you have influence but the system will bend you to its needs rather than bending to yours. It's very perverse.

Having never really engaged with Pynchon before this episode made me A) want to, really badly and B) want to work harder to be a better writer

Just that first mention of a "holistic detective" made me think of From Hell. Great comic. Essential really. Shame I can't recommend the film adaptation because its so forgettable.

So for folks who have read Inherent Vice, would you recommend starting with the book or the movie? Up until now, the only thing I had ever heard about Pynchon was how hard his books were to understand, but this whole vibe of "Big Lebowski but darker and with something to say about America" sounds compelling right now. (Also, as someone who got into collecting tarot decks for a while and struggled not to be Weird about it - holy shit is Sortilège a *fantastic* nickname. I'm so jealous Pynchon thought of that first.)

thomas pynchon scratching out a long list of names that includes Claire O’Mancy and Izzy DaFutcher

Mmm... that discussion of the spanking brings to mind a bit I read about Fiona Apple dating magician David Blaine after Anderson, and that Blaine spanked her in ways that suggest a D/s dynamic, then the fact that Apple was SA'd as a child, which next to each other suggest some possible extra subtext to that scene and the whole film. Edit: Initially mistemembered it as Derren Brown before twas pointed out he's gay.

B
Be Gay Solve Crimes · June 24, 2026

i’d be very surprised to hear fiona apple dated derren brown given derren brown is *incredibly* gay

I'd read that the Anderson/Apple/Tarantino anecdote was whilst watching a movie (either in a cinema or at one of their homes) but either way very funny.

... its not trans I dont think. Its the hope of that hot bastard Evil fuck one has in a loathing hate love lust "I can...can I fix him?" abyssal amniotic KAOS left over from the let there be light and self suck upon the bnbn mound, that dark unworld that will —in the Halls of Minos as you face hermanubis Amit and the pleuroma of your ancestors— your heart, your HaSatan, will speak out, louder than Gabriel's vuvuzela. That that bloody minded stonedumb IDIOT who swaggers in a "Brute stupid Power is the best tool? Why use a hammer when most problems are solved by boot" droping the Idiot act and goes "Oh. youre sharp arent cha? well done" validating you and the intuition that he is way way WAY smarter than he acts. Which makes one feel smart, wise, charming... and worried that that bellhop was Mephistopheles and the Check In wasn't a Check In

Mild worr this podcast incubates the actual trans contagion. then again Adrasteia the Ironic has been very all smiles and "nothing" about the UK for way too long

Ouch, the mention of emos/scene kids specifically as a refuge for gender non-conformity really hit home. I used to be an emo kid until I got bullied into conforming to masculinity. I only lasted maybe 3 years max of masculinity between the end of my emo phase and the start of my transition and I always considered the time during my emo phase to have been less me being a "boy" and more me being a blue haired gender non-conforming thing :D

The reference to ContraPoints/Hbomberguy made me laugh real hard. That said, I think the point about people doing "political detransition" is something which I think about a lot. Andrea Dworkin went from being a free love advocate in her early days to being a pink-painted chud. Like with Trots-to-neocons, Nick Land, or Maoists-to-nationalists, it seems like a sort of dialectical negation-of-the-negation of their previous positions, where the substance isn't changed, just their orientation.

I watched this movie very stoned, then immediately watched it again slightly less stoned. Somehow whenever November say Puck Beaverton I hear Puck Pieterse, Dutch cycling phenom and petite red headed woman. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puck_Pieterse

I remember only watching this movie once and remember not liking it as I expected it to be a straightforward mystery. I don't know why, since I had already seen The Master. Might have to give it another shot.
