Robert Finally Hears Taylor Swift's "the 1" | Journey to the Eras Tour PT13
Welcome back to Journey to the Eras Tour! 🌲✨
This week, Robert finally hears Taylor Swift's "the 1" from folklore - a song that has quietly become one of Rick's absolute favorite Taylor tracks.
Before we even hit play, we go down a few unexpected rabbit holes... including Snoop Dogg's Doggyland, Toy Story 5, Taylor-loving kids ("Taylor-Tots"), and whether we should react to the acoustic or piano version of I Knew You Were Trouble.
Once we dive into the 1, we talk about:
• Why Rick believes the opening is the most hip-hop Taylor has ever sounded
• The creation of folklore during the COVID lockdowns
• Aaron Dessner's incredible production
• The Long Pond Sessions
• Taylor's "fictional stories" explanation... and whether we actually believe this song is fictional
• The famous Eras Tour note change after Taylor and Joe Alwyn's breakup
• Why this song feels so universal despite never giving us a specific person to picture
• Robert's thoughts on the stripped-back production, emotional storytelling, and why songs like this have become his favorite kind of music as he's gotten older.
One of our favorite conversations in this episode is about how Taylor writes songs that allow listeners to place their own memories inside them. Whether the 1 is fiction or autobiography almost becomes secondary because the emotions feel so real.
As always, thank you for being here and supporting Hazed Reactions. We also wanted to give a special shoutout to one of our longtime supporters, Robert, for always adding thoughtful context and helping make this community what it is. We appreciate you!
