Rap Fans SHOCKED by Taylor's Pen Game in Death By A Thousand Cuts | Journey To The Eras Tour PT10
Taylor Swift has written plenty of heartbreaking songs... but what happens when you find out she wrote one of her most devastating songs while she was actually happy?
In Part 10 of our Journey to the Eras Tour, Rick and Robert react to "Death By A Thousand Cuts" for the very first time, and this one completely catches them off guard.
Before we even hit play, we talk about why this song is so respected among Swifties, the story behind its inspiration from Someone Great, and why so many artists consider it one of Taylor's greatest songwriting accomplishments.
Once the music starts, though, everything changes.
Instead of focusing only on the lyrics, we spend a huge portion of this episode talking about the production. Jack Antonoff's beat, the unexpected instrumentation, and the way every sound serves the story absolutely blows us away.
Then we dive into the bars.
As lifelong hip-hop fans, we couldn't stop comparing Taylor's writing to some of the greatest lyricists in rap. The storytelling. The punchlines. The double meanings. The callbacks. The invisible threads she weaves throughout her music that reward listeners every single time they come back to a song.
And then...
...the bridge happens.
The boys finally understand why Swifties constantly debate whether this is the greatest bridge Taylor has ever written.
Let us know:
• Is "Death By A Thousand Cuts" Taylor's best bridge?
• Which lyric hits you the hardest?
• Did this reaction surprise you?
🎵 Next up: Robert continues his Fleetwood Mac journey with "Edge of Seventeen!"
👀 There may even be an extra surprise episode dropping for Patreon this week if we can pull it together...

Love this song!
The bridge!
Love this song!! it was one of my surprise songs for my eras tour. Going off of what you said about invisible strings I always felt there was a parallel between this song and “I look in People’s windows” not only sonically but the emotional complexity of lyrics “Death by a thousand cuts” and “I have died the tiniest death”. “I see you everywhere” and “I try searching faces on streets”. So many others!
Its just a great tune.
Taylor is an amazing artist... and I love that she works with multiple producers. Variety is the spice of life!
I'm sorry for asking but how exactly does the discord work? I've only ever used it to do study essions with my friends, so I don't really understand what you guys do there hhahha but you got me very curious
Hey sorry, missed this earlier but it’s just a space to talk about whatever. We have a server with different channels themed for different things. It’s really tough to explain but if you check it out, we have a few people in there very experienced and they’re super nice! The community is getting close and everyone is super helpful ♥️
Bow down to the bridge Queen!
Taylor was with one of the Haim sisters going into/out of the studio.
I would LOVE another collab tbh!
Not to say she isn't recording new music. I will say Electric Lady Studio is a big party space for them. VMA after parties, Taylor and Travis even attended a wedding there. There is a space on the roof and the owner lives there in an apartment. They have been parting there for years. You should watch the NPR Tiny Desk performance of this song.
Thank you! Yea I didn’t know they had a party space there but I’m definitely in the clown car for a Taylor and Jack collab for TS13 hahaha 🤡🤣🫶🏼
My thoughts on the traffic light lyric... traffic lights are definite. GREEN means GO! RED means STOP! But, But this was such a thought provoking lyric, Taylor asked the traffic light if it'll be alright and this time, the traffic light didn't know, and if the traffic light doesn't know, how the FUCK is she? Or how are we suppose to know?
Agree! I didn’t go too deep on the episode but it almost reminds me of when a stoplight goes out or even when it’s blinking… like you said even the traffic light doesn’t know which way is moving forward.
You should have them react to the Lover in Paris live version.
I agree…she slays!
Great reaction guys the bridge is so good
Yess it is! Definitely one of my top favs!
