We Read The Speak Up Now Letter Then Listened To But Daddy I Love Him | Journey To The Eras Tour PT2

WELCOME BACK TO OUR JOURNEY TO THE ERAS TOUR!

In Part 2 of our Taylor Swift deep dive, we're tackling one of the most fascinating conversations we've had so far — because this episode is really TWO reactions in one.

Before we ever hit play on "But Daddy I Love Him" from The Tortured Poets Department, we take a deep dive into the infamous "Speak Up Now" letter written by a group of fans during Taylor Swift's brief relationship with Matty Healy. The letter sparked major debate within the fandom, raising questions about celebrity relationships, fan boundaries, accountability, parasocial relationships, and whether fans should ever attempt to influence an artist's personal life.

Was the criticism fair? Did fans cross a line? Where is the boundary between concern and entitlement? We explore all of it.

We also discuss some of the controversies surrounding Matty Healy, why many people objected to the relationship, and whether Taylor Swift should be held responsible for the actions and comments of someone she was dating. The conversation expands into celebrity culture, fandom behavior, social media outrage, public accountability, LGBTQ+ advocacy, political expectations placed on artists, and the complicated relationship between fans and the celebrities they admire.

Then we finally dive into "But Daddy I Love Him."

Many fans have interpreted the song as a response to criticism surrounding Taylor's personal life and relationships, making it one of the most talked-about tracks on The Tortured Poets Department. As we break down the lyrics, we discuss Taylor's storytelling, poetic writing style, symbolism, themes of rebellion, love versus logic, family pressure, public scrutiny, and the ways love can blind us to warning signs that everyone else can see.

Robert especially finds himself impressed by the lyricism and poetic structure of the song, leading to one of our deeper discussions yet about Taylor as a songwriter and why The Tortured Poets Department is such a fitting title for this era.

Whether you're a longtime Swiftie, a casual listener, or just someone interested in celebrity culture and fandom psychology, this episode turned into one of our most interesting conversations yet.

What do YOU think?

Did the Speak Up Now letter cross a line?

Do fans have a responsibility to speak up when they disagree with a celebrity's choices?

Or should personal relationships remain completely off limits?

And where does But Daddy I Love Him rank among your favorite songs from The Tortured Poets Department?

Drop your thoughts below and stay tuned for the next episode in our Journey To The Eras Tour series!

I know it’s a lot to watch but I think both versions are so different in how they are filmed especially between the eras and obviously the changed sets and combined eras it’s worth watching them both.

I absolutely loved this reaction! I completely agree with everything you guys were saying especially with what robert was saying, like why send the letter to taylor? Send it to the GUY that actuslly said the racist stuff, why is it always the woman's responsability to fix male bad bahavior? So annoying. Again love your reactions so much

Totally uncalled for….she is an adult and sometimes you have to make mistakes. I truly believe she needed to be with him or she would always have wondered and this way she fully knows what a douche he is. I also think the last verse is about Travis ❤️

Yeess!! Sometimes you just gotta do the thing, even if you know it might not work out! Then you don't have to wonder all your life. Such a great point!

Soooo don't swarm me all at once for this statement That letter was 100% uncalled for. However...the ONE thing I give them is the weren't wrong about Ratty one iota. Horrible human. Racist POS that honestly shouldn't even continue to have his platform imo...I also wrinkled my nose when I found out they were around each other and thought to myself..."Um Tay wtf girl?! Ew he is disgusting." But the difference is I minded my own damn business lmao. Writing and signing that should have disqualified them via IP address from buying anything from her again 🤣

I assume the ladies watched Uncle Jerry from The Swiftie and The Scholar dissect this poem? It was a great episode 👏

the hunt to prove that travis kelce is maga is genuinely ridiculous. man kneeled with kapernick, supported gay players, and was called my pfeizer by the nfl for being the face of the vaccine

I always have thought back to this awards speech from Taylor back in 2008 about Love Story and her screaming But Daddy I love Him. When I first saw the track name I thought she was going to make a updated version but this context was needed more. https://www.tiktok.com/@seventeen/video/7377121166852361502?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc

Also, in the Swiftie reaction chats we call him Ratty or Gnatty Healy!😄

I believe in women's rights and women's wrongs and not holding women accountable for the actions of men in their lives. This made me so angry and I was already angry because of the fandom essentially bullying Taylor during the Midnights album release because they decided that there should be more Lana Del Rey on Snow on the Beach. In interviews, Lana said that SHE was the one that decided she didn't want a verse because she felt the song was better served if she was only doing harmonies and backing vocals, but there was such an uproar that Taylor released the 'More Lana' version.. that actually ruined the song for me. I think it would be just as disgusting as walking up to an artists painting and telling them that you think their art should have been done differently and that they need to change it. Then we get this stupid petition and the audacity and entitlement and full-on delusion of these people was mind-boggling! My flabbers were gasted! Corrina, I completely agree with what you said at the beginning, that this song is a response to multiple things in the fandom and from the public that Taylor was addressing and creating boundaries for and that the specific muse for this song isn't really that important. I really appreciate the conversations you guys had around this song, especially talking about how the patriarchy loves to let men get away with disgusting behavior, while simultaneously blaming women for their misdeeds. Great video you guys! PS- you guys should definitely create an animated emote and merch that shows a hand that looks like it's sprinkling spices but instead of spices, it's the word 'allegedly' sprinkling down! Brightest Blessings
