Dev Log #15 | Who's Behind the Darkness?

Hi everyone and welcome to my 15th Dev Log!

Before we descend into the shadows of today's update, I am incredibly thrilled to share some great news. Thanks to your incredible support, The Darkness Within has secured 4th place for the Most Anticipated Game of 2026 at the GSL Awards! Knowing the absolute titans we were competing against this year, this achievement fills me with immense pride and gratitude. Thank you to every single person who cast a vote. We aren't just building a game here, we are building a community.

Now, let’s talk about where Chapter 1 stands, and look into the fractured psyche of the man behind the story.

Development & Sneak Peek

We have officially shattered the 1,000-render mark for Chapter 1! This milestone ensures that my debut release will be incredibly substantial, packed with the visual depth this story deserves.

To be completely transparent, the last two weeks demanded a slower pace as I re-centered my focus and recharged my creative battery. But the rhythm has returned. I refuse to rush a vision this delicate. I owe you an experience that aligns with what I see in the dark, not a compromised release. Thank you for your patience while I bring this world to reality.

Here the current status to keep everyone up to date:

  • 23 out of 29 scenes are complete.

  • 151 new renders were created, bringing the total to 1121 renders.

  • I'm currently deep in Scene 24, where Mike uncovers the historical decay of the Realm of Darkness. To handle these ancient myths properly, I am constructing bespoke, single-render artistic cutscenes to give the past an ethereal, storybook weight.

For today's sneak peek, we are stepping dangerously close to spoiler territory. Mike isn't just facing the external, surreal horrors of the Realm anymore, he is facing the Darkness that has lived long inside of him.

For those curious, here's a deep dive on the MC, Mike.

Who am I, beyond the name of Mike?

I’ve always been captivated by deeply flawed protagonists. There is a profound, messy beauty in characters who reflect our own fractured humanity. For The Darkness Within, I wanted an MC who isn't a cynical misanthrope, but rather someone who simply never learned how to love himself.

With his mother resting in a vegetative coma, a father constantly lost to corporate travel, and a brilliant scientist sister, Mike exists as a ghost in his own home: a perpetual outsider convinced of his own failure.

But this story isn't a tragedy of remaining stuck in one place. It's a story of change. A journey from The Darkness Within, to a place of hope and acceptance. A story of how development is possible even in the darkest of places. I want players to resonate with Mike's story. So the question arose: how can I make his development feel earned? How can I make his story one that changes each day that passes?

To make his evolution feel truly earned, Mike starts the Prologue in his rawest state, constantly trapped in a loop of negative self-talk, an echo chamber of his own anxiety and doubt. But a fire lives inside him, waiting for a spark.

As the narrative unfolds, Mike will discover the terrifying weight of agency. Your choices will carry severe narrative momentum. These decisions won't feel arbitrary, they will naturally dictate his psychological growth. Choose poorly, and you will unlock the "Evil Route": a path where Mike completely rejects his vulnerability, turning inward to become something ruthless, numb, and terrifyingly efficient.

When writing, I submerge myself entirely into the characters' perspectives. To give you a taste of his mindset before his life fractured, here is a melancholic scrap of prose Mike penned during his unfulfilling university days:

Through the fires of a broken dream, I awoke to the gentle sound of the wind. Neither pain nor sadness arose first, but a silence instead, a silent cry from the depths of a rotten land.

What is it calling for? I’ve done what I could. Selfish, you might call me, though the fog keeps me from seeing what lies beyond. How am I supposed to know the way when the light itself has gone blind? What is there left to search for?

As I walked, flames tracked my steps. I wasn’t alone. There, in the darkness, a figure stood still: cold, and deprived of its soul.

As I drew closer, the eyes I met were the ones I saw every day: the eyes of my own broken heart.

Mike isn't a conventional hero destined to save a dying world. He has to save himself first. The Love Interests, the friends he'll make along the way, and the enemies he encounters will serve as mirrors, forcing him into corners and proving he isn't as alone as his trauma tells him he is. Unless he succumbs to the dark, he will learn to trust.

Riding the Waves

With my focus fully restored, the next two weeks are dedicated to a massive, climactic sequence featuring a fully realized animation. The atmospheric and emotional weight of this scene will alter Mike’s trajectory forever.

For those who enjoy tracking the soundtrack of our development, these past few weeks have been heavily soundtracked by the hauntingly minimalist Jóhannsson: A Sparrow Alighted upon our Shoulder. It perfectly captures the fragile, cold atmosphere of the deeper levels of the Realm.

Thank you for reading, for backing this vision, and for your unwavering patience while I build this story.

Until next Dev Log.
