The Mekkan Calendar
How many days in a month, months in a year, and significant dates, suggested by Orekh! Unfortunately, I just don't know a lot of significant dates, as I haven't really spent a lot of time writing out the historical lore to such granularity. At least, not events I'm willing to discuss yet. But it is true that every month has exactly four weeks of 28 days, so each month's numbers are always in the same place. All the names of the months are translated from their language to ours for your convenience. What's the 13th month? Uh... untranslatable.

Planetary aspects of Mekkan as far as I know: -Star: G2? -Semi Major Axis: 1 AU (based on the year length), -Eccentricity: N/A (likely very low) , -Mass: ? (likely 1 earth mass) - Radius: probably like earth -Gravity: likely 1 g -Axial tilt: N/A - Day length: 24 hours probably due to year length -Average temperature: Probably same as earth but could be a bit colder -Atmospheric composition: Assuming same as earth, -Atmospheric pressure: probably same as earth, Edit: trying to make a list lie this on pateron is a pain
well it has a tilt since they have seasons, given that they arent incredibly harsh its probably similar to earth's tilt
What about hours in a day
Karen having 4th wall powers is my favorite lore fact
Well she has 4d hearing (link here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/4d-audio-132213871)
The thirteenth month is Calibration, meant to normalize any variations on the calendar. The significance might vary based upon culture - either as a good time of the year or ill-omened due to being "outside" the rest of the year. A time for supernatural things to occur good and ill.
Ooh, I like that name! Maybe change the name to something akin to Latin or Greek, though. I'm using Tom's idea for thirteen months, and throwing in leap years every four years. On Earth (IRL) we also dropped leap days except for every 400 years on the century marks, as the Earth is just a little faster than that. I also have leap days and the Winter Solstice be not counted on my calendars. When leap days aren't counted, it's on the summer solstice, and in both instances, I'm having them be treated as holidays, with emphasis on the "holy" aspect; men have been found dead when forcing others to work on such days.
Call the 13th month Kei
I've honestly heard about this, but companies don't want it because then they'd have to pay their workers technically more per month and government's won't be making as much from taxation. But that's just a theory! A geographic theory! lol
I feel the need to ask how old Nora is...
Very cool! I'd like to see more about the world the Twokinds characters live in.
Why does maren have darker skin than her sister is it something to do with the curse that gave her keidran ears?
It's Karen that has the darker skin. And in addition to the Keidran ears, she also has a very thin layer of fur. That's what makes her "skin" look darker. As an aside, does she not have a tail in the Sketchverse?
Karen:4th wall break go BRRR
Well if going by the classic Julian calendar names and continue the September (7th) - October (8th) - November (9th) - December (10th) chain, then it would be logical to have the 13th month called Undecimber (11th). As for why the 12th month of the calendar is literally named "Tenth", you'll have to ask the Ancient Romans.
Smarch, obviously. The weather's lousy. Also March should be the first month of the year so that the numbered months make sense, that way "Smarch" can be short for "second March" and it can be a metaphor for the marching forward of time.
Yes I am turning my stupid Simpsons reference into a thing that actually makes sense now.
Terry Pratchett's Discworld has a month between June and July called Grune. So the thirteenth doesn't necessarily have to be the last month of the year!
eyy a discworld fan, but doesn't the Discyear have sixteen months and eight seasons?
I've seen a calendar like this somewhere... I think they called the extra month Sol.
My birthday is also Nov 18! Seems I share a special day with yet another cartoon character! For those who are wondering, it's Mickey Mouse.
If you fix September, October, and November while you're at you are the best ever
The 13th month is Octember; it's just the second Christmas Month, of course
The 13th month is usually just called "Bob" The reasons why are long and murky but it doesn't REALLY matter... it's Bob either way 😉
They both looks cute in lab coat 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I know it’s not the point of the art piece, but lab coat Maren is hot
I'm a big fan of the 13 month calendar with a day or two at the end of the year to align it for the next year.
Untranslatable is my favorite word in these situations. Does that mean Tom is going to have to name a month?!
More than one month was named after the guy who declared it. So Tomber? Fichemb(er)?
Karen doesn’t strike me as one to keep track of time XD
Except for her birthday and any other day cake is served.
Thank you so much, this sketch means a lot to me! And yes, I was expecting to hear just about birthdays or something, so the sketch lives up to expectations despite what Maren said.
Maren is CUTE with glasses!
Depending on where the extra month lies, converting to our calendar, Karen and Maren's birthdays actually land on Oct 25th (assuming the extra month is after November), or November 22nd (assuming the extra month is before November).
Ofc the 13th Month is called Keith... no-one's quite sure why... even Keith!
Well of course we know what the 13th month is called--obviously, it's Decembuary.
I personally would love if we used a 13 month calendar in real life. You can fit exactly 13 months with 4 weeks a month, always starting on a Monday and ending on a Sunday. New Years Day and Leap Year would then be their own special weekless days on the last weekend of the year. (so it go New Month 28th Sunday > New Years Day > Leap Year Day (if needed) > Jan 1st Monday) This would make every holiday much more consistent and probably even save money for organizations on planning/scheduling. As for a name? Eh, I say name it Sol after the sun. It's a relatively culturally-neutral addition that way, but any name will do.
Weekless days are a no-go for the Abrahamic religions, who insist that their day of worship happen exactly every seven days with no exceptions. People get VERY insistent when they think that their afterlife is on the line.
Rofl! Great fourth wall joke there tom xD
but translated for our convenience september, october, november, december should be months 7-10 not 9-12
Yea, blame the Caesars for that one. XD
So... 13 month, each with 28 day, 364 days. November 18th, is the day number 326 in the Year in the TK calendar. So, it's equivalent in our calendar (the Gregorian calendar) is... November 22th.
I am guessing that their calendar epoch is counting from the establishment of the unified Human kingdom or something.
Maren: "Where, exactly, did you obtain your teaching credentials?" Karen: "My what? I'm wearing a lab coat and glasses, isn't that enough?"
You also need a clipboard.
More lore! Yesss!
This also confirms that Maren is 21 years old and Karen is 17, although due to having one less day per year, physically speaking they would be much younger than you or I would be at the same age. There's probably some maths to figure out how much which I'm not smart enough to come up with.
Not much younger. 1 day per year at 21 is less than a month. It won't even add up to a whole year in old age.
13th month? Keidranuary.
Does the planet make perfect day-period orbits of the sun then? Or do they have a leap situation where every few years they just add an extra day that needs to be ignored to keep the calendars lined up nicely?
Eternal has adjusted movement of the planet so an year has exact whole number of days for a nice calendar without leap years.
I heard somewhere, maybe in chat, that their year is about twice as long as ours. Is it true? Are their day is longer than ours?
Mathing it out, their year is 364 days, so one less than ours (our leap years notwithstanding).
Well, since december is actually the tenth month, the thirteenth month would be the eleventh, so undecember... 😂
Karen: Yeah, Tom. Maren: Who's Tom? Karen: He's the creator of our world, and everything that lives on it. Maren: ...... (Immediately calls the local mental institution)
*beep* "Hello, Tom's Pizza! We deliver!"
I don't know about everyone else but the energy of this little lore thing gives me the thought that Karen was meant to be a potential secondary mascot of two kinds she just has the energy
Nice to keep track of things!
Wait, there are 13 months in the world of Mekkan? That’s shocking. And all the months have 28 days too?
Which means their year is 364 days long, one day shorter than ours.
You should make the 13th month Tomember
That would be a month Tomemeber
I wish I had more time in a day! Haven't been on Discord in ages for anything but family...
time to use physics to determine planetary characteristics
🤣🤣 I don't speak math! You're on your own!🤣🤣
Welp, Karen broke the fourth wall. Again.
Hasn't the whole comic only taken place over five months or something?
Pretty much, yeah.
I feel like we should talk Calander events during a stream or something.
Tbf since November and December both literally mean the 9th and 10th month, I seriously doubt you could come up with a worse name for a 13th 😂
Humans came around 400 years ago from their continent right? We can assume they set this up after they discovered Mekkan 461 years ago
Based on the timing, it's probably based on when they established their nation here.
That's really informative. thanks
Lore drop, awesome know about the setting and time! :) Also, looks like the people of Mekkan followed the proposed idea by Moses B. Cotsworth or the lunar calendar
Lore gifts be dropping
The 13th month is Ophiuchus.
the 13th month is October2, Electric Boogaloo.
Karen, spot looking at the nonexistent camera. You’re going to give your sister an existential crisis. Those experimental spells really did a number on Karen. XD
May we please get a list of character birthdays?
lousy smarch weather
Same hat! 🤣🤣🤣
C'mon. Everyone knows the 13th month is Febtober.
LORE DROP LORE DROP LORE DROP LORE DROP!
Karen over here breaking the 4th wall
