ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Untouched" by The Veronicas
/edit 10:12 PST 1/1/2025 I have uploaded yet another version with hopefully less errors
Wooo! Finished processing just in time! I get to eat next month.
Anyway, please check errors for me, and of course also please vote in the Song vs. Song poll, we're doing "Wake Me Up" by Avicii vs. "Don't You Worry Child" by Swedish House Mafia. An EDM episode! Hopefully it doesn't suck. https://www.patreon.com/posts/new-poll-wake-me-125398334

Rewatching to celebrate their 3rd place in the triple j countdown 🎉🎉🎉 https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/countdown/hottest100
I find it interesting with these one hit wonderland videos, because you mentioned them being from Australia and them getting some attention there. Makes me think of the inverse. Like for example, I'm Canadian and one of the first one hit wonders I think of from here is The Kings with "This Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide" like they're from here with only the one hit (technically 2 but they're always together on the radio), but did they have any radio time outside of Canada whatsoever. Or then you get oddities like The Tragically Hip who are by no means a one hit wonder here in Canada (their final concert had the largest viewership of a concert in Canadian history) but are hardly spoken of outside of Canada.
Finally a OHW I don’t know!
50 Cent Curtis trainwreckords
I was about to be like “oh yeah! I remember this band/song!” until halfway through when it showed a clip of Aly and AJ’s “Potential Breakup Song,” when I realized THAT is the song that I thought this referred to and while I still recognize the name of the band I never actually heard this song before.
Well YouTube decided to delete my comment, so I'll post it here. I wonder how many other people agree with this sentiment. I can explain Jason Mraz and "I'm Yours". You know how in the video there's the part where Todd talks about how synths weren't it in 2007/2008? Yeah no, around that time those of us who rallied behind I'm Yours were definitely going through the "I was born in the wrong generation and modern popular music is mindless garbage" phase, myself included. What we heard in I'm Yours is something real and earnest, like those Good Songs from generations past, that wasn't trite club nonsense or The Morally Depraved. None of this was actually true, of course; a lot of popular music, and pop music even, from back then still holds up and is good. I was in high school at the time, and you can probably blame teenager-ness for some of that feeling, but boy did it feel visceral and real. Which is why the Lil Wayne redo of I'm Yours hurt so much, and I still can't bring myself to like it (the bitterness is still there). I Won't Give Up, which was Mraz's next hit, proved firmly that no, he didn't actually want to be the Savior of Music we wanted him to be; it was decent, but faded into the background, just like Mraz himself would. (Which is funny,as a fan of 1970s Italian pop music I can name a bunch of all-time classic songs from back then that are structurally similar to I Won't Give Up.) I still can't help but smile when I hear I'm Yours. Yes, it's a silly love song, but [insert Paul McCartney here]. Looking back with hindsight, we probably should have recognized it as what it was (a silly love song), not the Oasis In The Desert we treated it as. But we were definitely tired of ... well, the sorts of stuff that I imagine a lot of people tuned into Todd back then to watch get dunked, actually. I only started watching around 2013-2014 or so, but I know even back then I disagreed with his opinion of I'm Yours while generally nodding along to a lot of the rest of it. But I've grown out of it now. I bet there's still a lot of people who are stuck in that "born in the wrong generation music stopped being good in 2005 or earlier" mindset, or even the diet version of that, which is "everything except rap and country". I'm sure there'll be more Jason Mrazs for them soon enough. (I know I listen to rap music, and while I'm still not there with all country I've found a bunch of good things in the Deep Underground. I've also grown out of the Peal Clutch Gasp-iness of it all as well.)
I like your dog.
i really can't get over The Archies lawsuit, by the way. the archies aren't even a real band (and they're not even the voice actors for the characters!), and the name is just 'the + a name that has existed for centuries'. it's like if mike love sued the city of kokomo, indiana. also, sorry to the boomers of the world, but sugar sugar is a terrible song
I'm a Boomer and I totally agree. Whenever I hear people complain about "music these days" and how the songs don't have great lyrics, I remember that Sugar, Sugar was a true hit and then I laugh.
As an Australian, this video features so many uniquely Aussie references which will be brought up in the comments when it goes public. (P.S. Putting subtitles on Richard Wilkins?)
Who's singing in the cover at the end?
That "hook me up" song is pretty catchy
Man, I had the same reaction to that song on, what was my first listen during this video. Great opening strings to a very mediocre vocals section. And it's not like they don't have great voices, but this song really doesn't showcase it. Too back Warner fucked them over (shit move Warner, shocking, I know) because their next album did sound promising.
There's some issues with your transitions. See 24:38 as an example.
OH MY GOD Saw them in Philly last year. I think they said it was their first time stateside in like 13 years, but they were absolutely awesome. Such a great show. Can't wait until they come back again!
Oh man, I loved the Veronicas. I saw them live once and they were great.
If you'd asked me, I would have said that I knew at least one Veronicas song because I definitely knew OF them (I remember that Suite Life episode), but not a single one of these songs sounded familiar.
I remember so much promotion for the Veronicas when I was in middle school. The thing I remember most was Teen People named them “The Next Avril Lavigne” (that issue also named Robert Pattinson as the next Orlando Bloom and the actor who played Peter in the Chronicles of Narnia as the next Leonardo DiCaprio. Eh, they got one star.)
Great ep, but unless this is a joke that's completely flying over my head, it seems you blurred out Max Martin instead of Dr. Luke in the image at 6:54
I've NEVER heard this song before but the mention of Hot Chelle Ray gave me war flashbacks.
this really is one of those moments when I realize that Todd is a straight man and I am a queer woman, because: yes it is absolutely considered a gay #yearning anthem. Their connection to t.A.T.u didn't hurt.
I had never heard of this band and now it will take over my life and I'm OK with it.
Eh this song is OK but I definitely don't have some deep nostalgia for it as I have ZERO memory of ever hearing this song on the radio.
GOOD CHOICE TODD
1) This is one of your best, I learned a lot about a song I used to love back in high school and didn't think much about afterwards, now I want to go back and listen to more of their songs. 2) Idk if it's just my computer but a lot of the cuts in this look mistimed throughout. 3) I'm gay and this song definitely meant something to me, but I think it's more because I listened to a lot of the glammy trashy electroclash from around this time that sounded a lot like it. It always reminded me of "Alala" by CSS.
Not even joking if I had the money this would've been my main request, thank you so much Todd. Personally would've liked more attentuon given to that INCREDIBLE Hook Me Up album, but you said Take Me On The Floor was better than Untouched (totally true) and you recommended them in the end, so I'll take it!
Fury Road clip too loud, can't hear what you were saying Todd
My problem with the song is the entire thing feels like a complete waste of those opening strings. A song that begins like that needs to have an equally satisfying chorus at the very least.
Thanks for covering our national anthem Todd
I’m a straight man but I enjoy plenty of music by LGBT artists because LGBT people make damn good music. This song is no exception
Huh. I don't by that no this one ever made to Canada. Cuz I certainly don't remember it XD. Probably got drowned out by Avril and Fefe Dobson here EDIT: FEFE DOBSON CAMEO SPOTTED XD
Idk maybe The Gays just like energetic pop music because it's fun
In the intro, when you play the clip of Fury Road, the audio is too loud and it drowns out your line. It's a good joke, I wouldn't want it to be missed.
The third OHW that I had no clue existed until this moment. I'm old. EDIT: Now that I watched this...eh. I'm not really feeling the song or the band (but I'm a fifty-year-old man. Do you really want me to be feeling the Veronicas?). Great video as usual, though. You may be the one YouTuber who I'm guaranteed to watch regardless of the topic.
I am a 50 year old woman and I don’t have a connection to the song either. It’s definitely an age thing. Still an entertaining video though!
Can you imagine what else was on Sexie Lexie’s playlist?
here's a little context from a gay millennial: A LOT of us had online relationships, especially when we were teenagers. i can think of plenty of times i specifically related to untouched, lmao. this is absolutely what a gay 15 year old with a Tumblr bf wants to hear a song about
to put it another way: MANY people have listened to untouched on their ipod in the backseat of a car and imagined an anime AMV set to it
This was my request! Excited to watch this later
Finally got to watch, VERY happy with how this turned out. I know there's some questions about whether they're a true one hit wonder, but this was a great story and I'm glad this was the choice. Sometimes the borderline one hit wonders are the ones with the most interesting stories!
Was high key expecting a Ken Penders mention at 6:28
Lovely episode Todd! There's a bit of a jump cut at 4:30 (just after "had global ambitions for them"), 9:36 (after Kesha's photo pops up), 11:23 (after "the blippy electro riffs that Lady Gaga had"), and 17:53 (after "I don't know"). Also, the "it" at 6:53 has been cut off, and there's an empty black screen at 25:37 while Jess says "Lisa and I didn't talk...".
One more: the 2014 self-titled album didn't hit number 1 in Australia, seems to have stalled at number 2? The lead single did hit number 1 though.
As an Australian, I have never heard of this song. By that time I had decided radio was rubbish and embraced my agoraphobia though, so it's not too surprising.
strange edit round mraz part 1240-45 ish and 1305, 1502, 1640 black screen flickers, quick bad cut around 1558, lingers at 1723 in a way I don't think you intended before going back to the song, 1744 jittery edit, 1755 as well ... Idk there's probably more to come but I just want to watch and enjoy this, its feeling like unpaid work to keep noting them all here. I hope others note more and you just put the sweat in to do a scan, you'll find em all, recurring small issues fixed easily.
For some One Hit Wonder layers, their second album also includes a song (Revenge is Sweeter) that is a diss song about a technically not One Hit Wonder, but pretty close, Ryan Cabrera...who broke up with Lisa for Ashlee Simpson. A true 2007 sentence if I ever said one 🫠
juttery cut to black after the Austin powers clip at 527
I think it says something about my time online in the 2010’s that I recognize Untouched from a quick snippet of Code Ment that I saw, and I immediately recognized Take Me On The Floor from the Nightcore version I heard XD
The T.A.T.U. One Hit Wonderland episode could just be titled “how to lose your entire gay fanbase in a day”
The band with both a bisexual and homophobic member (they're both the same person).
so, you mention that ruby rose is the future batwoman. she actually already was batwoman for a sesaon, and then they fired her after the first season and had her character get face surgery to recast
"imagine what you have to do to get fired as the lead" was a post i read from someone else on the show
good shit !!! the song will continue to be a bop, despite being one of the most weirdly mixed hit songs i can think of -- seriously wtf is that chorus ?? at the same time, if anything song can succeed in spite of it it's a song with as much raw pent up emotion behind it as this one
Around 2:48 the narration track is layered UNDER the mad max clip instead of on top of it, it makes the narration quieter and it stands out from the surrounding clips
Also the video overlay clips have transparent top/bottom bars instead of black, so I can the the edges of your main video shot around the music video clips
"Worse than Billy Corgan?" Oh, boy, that's like failing to clear the high jump on the bar’s lowest standard. Yeah, it's interesting how often it seems that a non-debut, eponymous album has that defensive, “we’re still here” energy to it. Probably why a lot of them end up being so mid. I think my favorite non-debut, eponymous albums are Red House Painters' second album and the Beatles' White Album. This is just a guess, but I think it worked in the former case because it was the product of a cult band with a loyal audience (so that defensive energy isn’t needed) whereas the latter was a product of a band that had a ton of momentum behind it, so the minimalism comes across as experimental rather than desperate.
Paramore’s S/T is probably my favourite Paramore album, but I think that’s largely *because* of its defensive “were still here” energy
A lot of time when you comment over part of a video, the upper part is cut showing thee top of your hoodie, but the rest of the video is from the music video see for example 14:52. It seem to be a systematic issue.
Freaky, I literally just listened to this song like an hour ago... Also Teenage Millionaire from that 3rd album is a bop Re: mistakes, your footage pops up on the top & bottom of the music video at 2:14 and that keeps happening throughout whenever music video clips appear over your VO, and the Mad Max audio drowns out your VO at 2:45
Around the 2:30 mark looks like yhe music video is overlaid over the footage of you at the piano. Til that you record your whole video's audio there apparently, lol.
We did this as the second-to-last or third-to-last song in our high school's annual Rock Show one year. We put our string chamber on stage and then for some reason at the same time I would play the string chords on a synthesizer along with them, which was pretty neat. I've forgotten all the words, but those chords -- those chords are the things stuck in my head.
Great episode Todd. The only error I found was the sound editing during the “mad max” reference. The movie footage is too loud.
Haven't heard this song in a while, but I have heard of them. I had friend who absolutely loved 'em and played 'em all the time. And this wasn't the first song I heard by them... there was another... with a video set in a school that I can barely remember. Dammit. Guess I'm not going to bed just yet
Hook Me Up?
Oh man I remember this one 😭 one of my favorite songs from childhood!! Also 4ever and Hook Me Up were BIG in my rotation A few weird cropping issues where your clips/screenshots don’t fill the whole screen. That’s the only error I could find! ❤️
10:52 footage continues over you talking
A bit of a mixing issue at 2:48 during the Mad Max clip (can't hear Todd's cleverness)
I still have a bunch of The Veronicas songs off that album in my mp3 collection! I was introduced to them by So You Think You Can Dance Canada using this song.
My favourite song of theirs is probably Revenge Is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were)
Welp, so much for going to bed early tonight! Noticed the top of your head at 2:14, and other times where the video is shown.
Not Canadian :-(
I mean, nothing you can call a One-Hit Wonder will hurt as much as Midnight Oil (or that attempt at an Australian accent, jesus) At least, until you do the screaming cowboy from Big Enough
'Remember that Flume band who had that one song in 2016, where did they come from?'
Also the clip from fury road is too loud over your voice
2:14 the footage continues over you talking
Covering another Aussie act 🇦🇺❤️
Always feels weird to see an artist from your home country who are basically household names here, but are one hit wonders overseas.
These OHW’s are getting too modern for my tastes and are making me feel old lol
No one remembers Forever 2009? That song was better than untouched!
If you're referring to the Veronicas song "4ever", that song is actually a couple of years older than "Untouched"
