❗❗❗ Upcoming Game Distribution Changes

If you already have a Steam key, none of this affects you in any way.

For new supporters, though, starting with the release of v0.4.0 (somewhere in September), I won’t be sending Steam keys by default anymore. Instead, we’ll switch to the approach most games use: the latest build will simply be attached as a downloadable archive.

🤔 Why?

Firstly, every key is currently sent manually by my mortal hands. It wasn’t much of a problem when there were fewer of us, but as more people join, it takes more and more attention away from development.

Secondly, I’m also not always around to send a key immediately. Some of you got yours almost instantly, while others had to wait a day or a little longer. With downloadable builds, new users will simply get access as soon as they join.

And lastly, there are limits to how many keys we can distribute outside Steam. I don’t know exactly where those limits are, and I’d rather not find out the hard way. Plus, we’ll still need plenty of keys later for content creators and other promotion around release.

💔 The Downside

There is one obvious downside to this change.

If you don’t already own a key, getting the latest build will require an active subscription. I know this is less generous, and I don’t want to pretend otherwise. The old system had its benefits, like Steam stats or ease of updates, and it was something I was happy to do while the project was smaller, but as it grows, we need an access system that can scale.

👑 The Key is dead, long live the Key!

That said, Steam keys aren’t disappearing completely. From time to time, I’d still like to send a limited number of keys to loyal supporters just for your convenience in downloading new builds. I can’t promise exactly when or how many, but I definitely want to keep doing that when possible.

And once again, if you are an early adopter and already have a Steam key, absolutely nothing changes for you ❤️
