The Big Housing Video
[Early Access]
Hello Patrons,
With the election called for May 3rd we're stepping it up and releasing some of the bigger videos we've been working on. These are both things we've currently got in the pipeline and a few you've seen early but we've yet to show the public.
Today we're showing you our main video on housing before the election. Let's take a look at the housing crisis and what the different political parties are offering in their election platforms.
You may have noticed we've switched over to monthly billing on Patreon instead of billing per week, per video released. The amount you're charged will not have gone up, it will remain consistent and be lower than the previous system where 5 weeks fit into a month. We'll still be showing you weekly early videos (when they're ready) and have a few more rewards for patrons that we'll be rolling out shortly. Keep your eyes peeled.
In the meantime, thank you all for your continued support!

About building enough new houses - I think if you built too many then house prices would start to fall - but the housing minister wants house prices to keep on rising... so you've got to pace yourself to make sure the wealthier people always become wealthier (rather than lose any value in their properties).
Jordies, is it possible to make a video on youth crime in Victoria? It was the main thing that got the Libs in QLD in recently and is likely to affect albo's re-election chances, not to mention the next state election in Vic.
Besides property prices "sustainably" rising forever or falling there is another alternative - staying the same. That way wages can catch up again and people roughly hold onto their investment. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-12-14/housing-minister-says-house-prices-shouldnt-fall/104724144 "...Economists have argued house prices should stand still, or perhaps even gradually fall..."
This will be a great resource for dinner table arguments about which party is more competent. One thing I would add or put to a future video is a very simple checklist so that it's easy to actually remember some of the detail.
Thank god he said "The Liberal Government!" I've been waiting so long for my fix
It’s a shame, I like the help to buy scheme policy but average normal voters think it’s communism 101! Instead of the banks helping you invest for a house the government pays a small percentage and you pay the rest. Dutton’s really banking on “that’s Marxist and albo sitting on your kitchen table the purchase your first home!”
I think people buying homes from the government worked well in the 1970s and the ratio of median salary to median house price was about 3 and then it went up to 13 or so. This is what the Greens are saying though and Jordies would say that the Greens aren't really able to pressure the government into that.
Clare O'Neil said she wants prices to keep on increasing and NEVER decrease. I think the only answer to the housing crisis is for prices to decrease (or wages to increase dramatically like doubling). I think prices in Victoria have dropped a bit lately but I don't think the government should oppose that. Maybe housing is a bubble and one day it will decrease.
What about current mortgage holders? Paying off a $600k mortgage on a house that suddenly becomes worth $500k or less?
A note that I think that needs to be added to this message is: "Instead of crashing the housing market that would destroy the investment in housing and the demand for new workers in the industry - Labor is working to raise people's salaries so they can afford the sustainably growing housing market which will have increased supply so the workers with more money can find a house to buy."
to catch back up the salaries would need to double and then maybe houses would increase even more
Really interesting video, keep it up!
Great video. I didnt think it was too long. Clare O'Neil's answer should have been wage growth as discussed. Been watching Gary Stevenson about the UK issues, tax wealth more and earned income less. One thing in Aus is that state gov land tax for investors has been introduced, valued at a rate judged by the state government. Its a sleeper that's getting bigger and I personally believe it'll push investors out of housing. They didn't i troduce it to benefit future owners but i think it will. No land tax on shares but same neg gear and cap gains.
God told me to tell you that property is theft. The Diggers 1649
Awww... I thought it'd be bigger....
Everyone's an immigrant
Good video, but needlessly long and complicated for what is actually a very simple issue. About 2/3 of voting Australians have a mortgage or own a house outright, and until that figure drops below 50%, any promise to reduce (or even freeze) house prices is political suicide (as proved by Bill Shorten in 2019). As FJs notes towards the end of the video, you can rely on people to vote in their self interest and lower house prices is not in the interest of the majority. Yes, it sucks and it’s 100% Howard’s fault, but that’s the world we live in. IMO, this point should be made at the very beginning of the video.
Or cut up into shorts
Seems kind of odd or counter-intuitive, but house prices coming down will be something that is almost universally celebrated. I mean down though, not a crash as that would be different. Time to piss off negative gearing.
No. Because then your house could be worth less than what you paid for it. Then you're under water on a loan.
So instead of $5/week it will be $20/month?
God bless old mate oniell lol. "Grow Sustainably". Hmmmm but the housing affordability issue is present now..... soooo still fucked and will continue to be fucked....surprise surprise.
I'm guessing you don't have a mortgage but will inherit from your parents.
