The conversation about creating new myths and cryptids was super cool! The Fate franchise actually has this phenomena in their lore as the different ages. Each age represents the power levels of magic and magical beings, with the age of mystery being the most recent one to end if I recall? That one is where cryptids and folklore still thrived, but in the face of the information age, where more is known, it's becoming impossible for many beings from that age to exist or propagate! Fun existential stuff in my opinion!

Polish listener here! I would say all of the world is so exposed to the amercian culture it does not seem exotic at all to us, even tough it's very different. That being said, personally I love all of the american folklore, appalachian legends and stories about cryptids. To be honest we don't really have cryptids here even tough we have lush forests, hundreds year old buildings and castles. We do have a lot of creatures in folklore and legends but they are just that, you'd never hear anyone talking about sightings or real life stories about them. The thing he is mixing up with Arcadia is the concept of “Et in Arcadia Ego.” It essentially means death will always find you even in paradise. “I am even in Arcadia.” It’s also the phrase that is etched on Judge Holden’s rifle. So it’s probably stuck in his mind from that.

*Out of character here: As someone who is from/ grew up in Wolfe County KY, hearing the words "Fayette Mall Incident" was like a flashbang. When Isaiah mentioned Harlan County it reminded me of all the times i would hear them being said on the local news if there was a snow day. Fun memories.

As a german, who only knows ghost stories from his own country i find it very fascinating to learn about things like cryptids or other other mythologies in general. And i als get that reading other stories in familiar settings like school or work, when compared to Japan or the USA. Because, fun fact, here you dont work on sunday, like 90% of stores are closed, only restaurants and gas stations. Thats allways something i have to remind myself of when reading something.

Maybe a streach a little but for many people the bathroom is also a spot for isolation from others. Being closed in a room by yourself with just your thoughts. His apartment was an escape from society, and the bathroom was a final wall defense and *the creature* attacking him at the end there I think is a nice symbolism for completely succubing to loneliness.

I think a really cool ending would be he goes to the shop keeper and the shop keeper explains everything about the creature and how to kill it. Then he goes back to his flat and lures the creature out by playing nightmare by avenged sevenfold. Then the creature does a monologue about how the guys special. Then he catches it on fire or something and he escapes with the help of a group of lady boys

Aswangs (and, again, this is a general term for monsters and cryptids) usually take the form of regular humans in the morning. Others that don't shape-shift like the Kapre are often forest folks and don't leave the woods unless they spot a victim they really want.

French here. Most of the stories you guys read are relatable to us because our cultures are so similar, and also because we've been exposed to American horror movies since childhood, so some tropes are already familiar, even though they really should be exotic. For instance: cabins in the woods (we don't have that), camping trips (camping, in France, is mostly limited to trailer parks with lots of people, in a vacation setting, usually on the seaside), hiking (you never hear about the French going on hikes even though we have tons of forests and mountains ; very German thing to do though), we don't have diners, we don't hang out in our cars that much, and we don't have a shit ton of local legends or cryptids either, the emergency line works differently, etc. Small towns are mostly quaint little villages with an elderly Catholic population, but we're not superstitious like the Italians. We do have a substantial amount of agricultural land, but it's nothing like the endless corn fields of the Midwest: the crops don't grow to be very tall and the agricultural areas are decently populated. The vineyards can get a little freaky sometimes, and young people in the countryside like to hang out there. The eeriest things about France mostly derive from traditional ye olde mysteries: forests, mountains (we even have volcanoes), and dilapidated castles. Along the northern/western coast, we still have German bunkers from WW2 where spooky things happen all the time, in the East there are entire ghost towns that were completely wiped out by bombs and massacres, and abandoned containment camps in the South for immigrants. We have cemeteries overflowing with broken graves everywhere, some churches are very weird, we deadass have the skull of Mary Magdalene in Marseille, etc. So I guess our stories could also feel a little exotic to you guys as well. Isaiah already knows about the beast of Gévaudan, which is our most famous piece of werewolf folklore. We have other urban legends/folktales that are worth looking into: the White Lady (a legend common to many European countries, but the French twist is that she either causes or protects from car accidents), the night laundresses of Bretagne, the fairy Mélusine, Bluebeard, the "give my heart and liver back" story, and many more. I'd be happy to translate some if you guys wanted to have a European/French centric episode one day.

Like how the Abhartach, a vampiric like creature that can be found across the world, is what is speculated to have inspired Bram Stoker's 'dracula' creation as we know it today.

I really enjoyed the story and the boys analysis of what the author perhaps was going for. My own interpretation, although I wouldn’t say it differs too much, is that the narrator begins the story by saying they have no interest in the locals or anything only the temples and old antiques left behind of a world with values of modesty that have since passed and remarks at the human sin that is happening due to circumstances of poverty. Things that you don’t want to see whenever you’re traveling somewhere as a tourist, they discuss these things as if they should be put away in the daylight as not disturb the beauty of the old artifacts and lessen shame towards the ancestors. The way he talked about “ the toothless ladyboys” and that being the trigger for switching the routine In the night, they go out when no one else is around. There’s an understanding that what’s out there at night in the minority, as the boys remarked unmemorable. The narrator makes several remarks as notoriously atrocious like the roaches and rats. Even the stray dog. Throughout the story, he’s said nothing positive about any of the living organisms there only talking about old and left artifacts that they first see so I feel that it’s very fitting that because the narrator isolate themselves to avoid the perceived disgustingness of the city that he would see something truly disgusting that is old, something that may have been there long before the prostitution, trinket shops, and poverty . I’m struggling to put my interpretation into words I hope someone gets what I mean.

To add to a point the boys made at the 58 min - 1 hr mark about how the modern era has killed mythology and ambiguity, humanity will never be able to go back to that era and will go from metaphorical horror like "Oh this creature is meant to be a hyperbole of Sam Altman" to making it literal with examples like the original Magnus Archives and Mother Horse Eyes' sci-fi future segments really touched on that perfectly. I really think we could bring back mythology by going "Yeah we can explain technology and surveillance, but what if something took advantage of that? Something beyond humans?" And I think that's why stuff like SCP have thrived because humans can and have captured or document these inexplicable phenomenon and yet they continue to defy reality. The issue is we have lost the ability to doubt or suspend disbelief and Hunter was right, a lot of myth is lessons taught to children. Modern humans are so quick to dismiss things as fiction but if I told my children that Flock cameras were all eyes of a monster that lives underground watching them they would be just as scared as adults are for the same reason: the fear of being observed and analyzed.

Their discussion about surveillance and our fears being depicted made me really think about the magnus archives! Not sure how this pod would cover it since its audio but im really curious how the goon and the meat would think about the series!

Haven't listened to the episode yet, but you should definitely check out the Dreamer series from this guy. I haven't fully finished it yet, but it's sooo good. The Quirk horror trilogy specifically is so creepy.

The interesting thing that this story is getting at is the paradoxical nature of extreme anxiety. I’ve experienced this myself in the past when I was a much more anxious person. Anxiety cripples you completely, tells you that everything is dangerous, that the only way to avoid the danger is to avoid the situation. The danger can be embarrassment, failure, rejection, an awkward moment, anything. But it’s a self fulfilling prophecy. By closing yourself off to the world, those fears have no choice but to become a reality. They just come from yourself rather than others. The story manifests this as a physical monster. The monsters fixation on him is self imposed, and that “safety” he found in the dark lonely streets is the very thing that seeks to destroy him. It’s not exactly a groundbreaking concept but it’s a fun way to mythologize and express your own struggle with anxiety, which this author likely deals with. You should read more of their stuff this was pretty sick
