I think everytime Thomas’ face twitched, reality shifted. Otherwise there’s no need to keep including him doing that. And everytime he did that lil twitch Eve lost some sense of her reality, whether it be the dumb waiter or the cellphones. He does it again right before he hands her the Lockett. But all in all great story

I like the name symbolism. Eve is the first woman, the original. And Charlie Bastion, like she’s the last bastion or last hope for remembering Eve.

What's Ligma · October 17, 2026

Only thing I don't really like about this story is the Morse code stuff. I just don't feel like it adds anything and it doesn't connect with the rest of the story. The final finished phrase doesn't deliver anything for me. The rest slaps though.

Such a great slow burn in this, I was clapping my feet by the time Eve was fighting back. It's always great when a story makes the guys theorise to the point of not knowing what's happening anymore; makes the Shutter Island comment at the beginning even better too.. I'm gonna need a nice, quaint IKEA shelf for all these books I'm ordering dude.

People will probably disagree with me but I found this story so annoying from the standpoint that I never would have put up with someone coming in my house in the first place let alone let them stay and make themselves at home. All the excuses and lingering from Thomas and his family just frustrated the hell out of me.

M
Marcus Kliewer (aka Polterkites) · October 2, 2026

Unfortunately it is very unlikely a traditional publisher would allow a full book read through, they are insanely wary of anything that has even a .001% chance of cannibalizing sales. Short stories or novellas of a larger collection, however, are way more plausible…

V
V · September 28, 2026

I’m with Isaiah because if Thomas is a real person that genuinely believes his sister is delusional. Why give her the locket? Even if Eve had put it in the locket herself and tricked herself into thinking she was in a relationship with Charlie, you wouldn’t give that to her because it would only serve to reinforce the delusion. And the face twitch, every time Thomas’ happy facade almost slips they include that detail. That definitely puts me in the camp of Eve not being crazy.

D
Dan L · September 26, 2026

2:37:33 the "name things you see/smell" is a popular grounding technique for anxiety called the 5-4-3-2-1 method. 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, 1 thing you taste. It's basically used to stop your brain from racing and make you focus on the things around you. You see Chuck from Better Call Saul use it in some episodes.

M
Marcus Kliewer (aka Polterkites) · October 1, 2026

I actually first encountered this grounding technique from watching better call Saul

L
Luke DeSimone · September 25, 2026

S
Santiago morales · September 25, 2026

These stories always make me so frustrated. When characters act stupid the whole time or make bad decisions the whole time because the story has to happen. You have to make it more believable cuz it just makes it so annoying that these characters are going through it because it was preventable. And I feel less attachment to them because they don't feel like real people.

E
Eltoria · September 25, 2026

Definitely have to go team Isaiah on this one folks. I think the early paragraphs just make far more sense if the house bent reality to swap Eve with Abigail. Go team Evengelical.

N

A
Alex · September 23, 2026

Gotta be so real, Hunter’s take on this story sucks lol. For one, too many other elements of the story point to Thomas being supernatural for it to be pure delusion, not to mention Charlie’s locket at the end. If that is the real ending then the story sucks because it just throws out a bunch of elements that mean nothing in the end with Abby in the basement, the paintings, the journal, etc. There have been some good stories with that kind of “narrator is insane” rugpull, but to me it’s just a total cop-out.

Life pro tip: my husband and I are happily married and slept in different beds in different rooms since before we were married bc bro has sleep apnea (better than his snoring pre-CPAP), is a heavy sleeper, and moves around so much in his sleep, while I’m a light sleeper and have difficulty falling asleep (initially and whenever I’m woken up in the middle of the night). I also have mental health issues that are WAY worse when I’m deprived of sleep, so we figured out early on that sleeping in the same bed wasn’t gonna work. We still cuddle together in bed before going to sleep, but when it’s sleep time, we say goodnight and hug and go to our own beds. Honestly has made our relationship healthier bc I’m not constantly mentally unstable from sleep deprivation, and he’s not accidentally hitting and kicking me at night.

As someone who's wife has a degree in psychology, and has had many discussion about psychosis and the like - I have some thoughts on this one for sure. But for the same of not leaving a novel here...I firmly believe Hunter is right on the conclusion here. And there is a lot of evidence all throughout the story to support that opinion. Evidence based on what appears to be an author who did his homework on psychosis in general.

Not only would all in the layhead ending be so so crap after all of that because it it ends up removing all weight from the story. It also just doesn't make sense. The entire story has evidence dropped across it that all of this is really happening, especially at the end where he's effectively tormenting her by giving her the locket showing. Yes, it all really did happen and there's nothing you can do about it and no one will ever believe you. The fact that Hunter and the others are siding with Thomas and is clearly temporal controlling family is insane to me

But now Jenny is scared, and like Hunter said, hiding from her aunt in the family home. So, Thomas says he didn't see her, so she can be left alone to hide a bit locker and to not draw her aunts attention to her hiding (like he is thinking of the kid and also of trying to not hurt eve/abby's feelings.)

Notice the tie between "Eve" covering her face in the only picture, and how Abby was covering her face until her delusion comes out at the end. Thomas FOSTER. This old 50’s family couldn’t have a son after Abi, so they adopted him or fostered him. Maybe that’s how he got let in to the house to begin with. Abi sensed it just like Jenny did. She died in the house, ants consuming her body and she became a twisted piece of it. But like Thomas, because she’s been there so long, she learned to manipulate it. She switched Eve and herself because Eve had what she wanted. My opinion.

S
StardustWarrior16 · September 17, 2026

Maybe in her mind, the reason she made up this idea where she's a different person named Eve is because she wants to believe that she's not the same person who killed her sister in law and ruined her life. So her mind conjures an illusion where Abigail gets to go off into the woods happy while she lives on as a different person. Just a theory though.

Not sure if this will be a valid bear trap but when you started hypothesizing that charlie was not real, a representation of Eve's subconscious or a figment of her imagination i thought of when she woke up for breakfast immediately. Thomas had asked "Who?" he brought up her going to the store so im not positive this will turn out to be true or not. Just an interesting thought i had and wanted to share.

L
Lolo · September 17, 2026

So, I live on a rural property. We have had an unreasonable amount of people open our gate (which has private property signs all over it), drive onto our property and start wandering around. And then we just see random people wandering around our property checking it out casually. Becuase it is rural the "front" of the house is not necessarily obvious. So we ALSO had random people just turn up on our back porch calling out to us. Nearly all these people say they used to live here, and so wanted to look around now. Next to our drive way is the neighbours drive way that has a lot 1 and lot 2 split. We would constantly get people driving down OUR drive way to ask which one of the lots so-and-so lives at. Instead of picking the 50/50, where if they are wrong the neighbour will point them right... they just drive onto a property that has nothing to do with it, and where they know it will be the wrong property. Its wild how confidently people do this kind of thing. For logistical reasons we could never put a proper lock the gate. We did have a gate that is like four moving parts to open, so people would really have to think about what they were doing. But that did not deter them I guess. After an escalation of these types of events, we got a system in place that basically looks like the gate has a chain and padlock wrapped around it. So far this seems to have worked. But my god.

I’m Thinking Of Ending Things was such a good story, and the beginning of this story definitely reminded me of it. If you haven’t read it, I suggest reading it before watching the movie. The movie doesn’t do the story justice in my opinion. Still a good watch though.

Eve truther here... I feel like even if she was experiencing psychosis, Thomas still plays way too weird of a role in the story. To me, he clearly knows something and is gaslighting Eve.

S
Salem · September 16, 2026

[Spoilers] Thomas coming back to visit her at the end was definitely him trying to goat her into attacking him and therefore getting her probation revoked, imo. Even if you're on the boat that he was actually her brother and was genuinely concerned for her/cared about her... why, then, would he bring her the locket? If she were actually a criminally insane mental patient, that would be undoubtedly triggering for her and more likely to send her into some kind of mental breakdown rather than provide any sort of comfort.

D
Daegan Manley · September 16, 2026

Such a cool story. Love that it can leave you with both conclusions. I was leaning with hunter and maybe still am. That all this is just someone's insane mind is such a cool idea but the locket at the end makes me want to go back to a supernatural element. Its not far fetched to think that a sponsor could have taken a photo of you and give you a locket so you can remind yourself what you look like happy But it was definitely put in the story to make us wonder if it was all real. Im still leaning more on the insanity side. Main reason is the little girl hiding in a strangers house and everyone just being chill with that Is just too strange. It would make more sense if she was hiding in her own house. But idk what an awesome story. The fact it split the hosts like this couldn't be better.

Towards the end of this episode, during the discussion portion, specifically about the photo portraying Eve. Her hand blocks her face, similarly to how Abigail covered her own with the peekaboo hands. I'm an eve-truther. I think if the writer wanted to portray eve as imagining everything I don't think they would have included the locket at the end with her picture inside. Or thomas could have said "it seemed very important to you" instead of "you and charlie" In a way, it's like he's acknowledging their relationship goes beyond being her supporter for a few months. However, maybe the ending has changed a lot in the actual book to lead readers a different way

After listening to this a 2nd time, something I always do with psychological thrillers like these, I am on team she’s Abby and she’s crazy, there’s so many hints of it throughout the story that you miss if you’re not thinking about it. What I think is happening is maybe her and Charlie were previously dating and then as “eves” disorder gets worse Charlies role switched to more of a caretaker, or Eve has made the whole relationship up in her head which is also plausible bc of how Eve described charlie to be not that affectionate and they never do any thing relationship wise like kiss, maybe sleeping in the same bed, which is why I feel they might’ve previously been together but Charlie has fallen out of it. The house “changing” is just the MCs lapse of memory, she’s an unreliable narrator and her memories are confusing her potentially. Tom mentioned in the beginning when Abby and him were kids she had completely forgotten faces, forgetting her family and believing they were strangers so it would make sense she didn’t recognize tom. I agree with hunters take the in and out of psych wards goes along w in and out of houses they’re supposedly flipping. Tom and his family probably came to visit her as she had just gotten out of the ward into their childhood home. The facade and his little flickers of frustration are genuine, he’s upset his sister doesn’t remember him but he’s trying to play along with her facade to not aggravate her. The young girls sad look when they were supposed to leave was probably just being sad her aunt doesn’t know who she is. Visions of Abby walking around could very well be hallucinations of herself, we never get a description of Eve unless I missed it. When you’re delusional everything can be fitted very nicely into your delusions if wanted so I could totally see her making everything just seem the way the story goes bc of self affirmation. She dropped out of art school, the painting that’s mysteriously hung over the fireplace is “oddly familiar” bc she painted it and just can’t remember. She really did kill her brothers wife and Charlie won’t answer her bc that was the last straw and she won’t be involved with her anymore, potentially staying out of previous love and care even as eves state declined more, murder was just too much for her and she bailed.

Morse code leans pretty heavily that Abigail did in fact escape into the woods, and isn't part of the narrative of the story as it's outside the first person perspective, so I think eve was in fact shifted into a different universe, it's also how his other story worked.

The way that I see this story is one of two ways. Option one is one where eve is someone suffering from psychosis where she has gaps in her memory where she fills in with her delusional narrative with Thomas being the one she blames in her narrative and uses to justify her action’s and viewpoints and the story shows her slow relapse. Option 2 is the supernatural angle but I believe the supernatural aspect isn’t Thomas rather it is the house itself and the events in the story is caused by the house where the house acts as a Rubik’s cube where eve enters the house and the house starts shifting reality where eve is the constant where the changes are slow but with enough shifts it becomes so different then when eve first entered and it finally stops shifting when eve is permanently removed from the house and put into the psych ward.

(Unless devils advocate it was maybe eve/abby's moving into the house?? but that doesn't make sense) The "where are you going eve" is him reminding her just for his amusement since he knows he's already won. He knows his sister is free-- they definitely swapped that's why he just happened to be in town it wasn't for the kids) he figured out somehow how to get her back. Either that or thomas is just tied to the house and wants it back for himself. Or is tied to the land the forest itself. Its very full circle going back to the start him talking to abby in the basement "I thought you were on board/ just a little longer"--abby felt bad about the swap but in the end wanted the freedom she was long overdue. I love how ambiguious it is cause i can see hunters side too its crazy how well it works and I can't wait to see more of the houses history and iTS LIKE HOUSE OF LEAVES TOO IM HYPE

eve-angelicals stand up. warning, spoilers: this house is obviously some node in a network of different dimensions operated by thomas who trapped the real abigail in this hell, and was only allowed freedom once she found someone else to take her place. eve entering that room to escape abigail was her accidentally entering some new dimension, and each other door is a different dimension. justice for eve, she did nothing wrong!

I’m not going to spoil the ending, but the book has a lot more extra scenes (especially with Charlie and the family), and also with Eve walking around the neighborhood. I think Tom is some kind of evil entity because Abby said he came from before the trees were planted and he was painted later into the family portrait. I think he came to the original family's home and made them think he was their son and had been with them all along. Only Abby could see through what he was doing. That's why she wrote over and over that Tom was not her brother. Now he is doing it again, taking over the home again, and the only person whose mind he can't trick is made to look insane, just like Abby.

IDontLikeKmart · September 14, 2026

I'm full send with Isaiah and the Eve-angelists. Nearly every time Tom has an extended conversation with Eve there is some form of coercion and bid for submission "It'll only take us 10-15 minutes tops. Just listen to the doctor's Abby. We'll stay until the storm blows over" and yet every time Eve pushes back and Tom is the one to surrender there's the mention of the face twitch before he goes along with what Eve is saying. Even at the end with the final conversation in the psych ward she denies him and he cracks ever so slightly. Things only really hit the fan after Eve convinces herself to "play along for now" but every time she does reality slips further and further and the cracks in between grow fewer and thinner . She really gave in at the final dinner scene and everything after that was an absolute shit show and Eve lost 99% of her reality with only shards of what truly is shining through. She thought she could game the system to gain an advantage and that folly was her greatest slip, you cannot beat the greatest deceiver at his own game. Tom is 100% some ancient demon or similar evil force of deceit and every time you give in be it any way shape or form you lose a part of yourself you're likely to never get back.

She didn't know what she did at school, she looked upset at the beginning and was hiding in the basement? She had to of been trying to escape and had the same thing happen to her that happened to Eve and had to give up and play along

[[MINI BOOK-CLUB? SPOILERS]] [[COME BACK AFTER THE STORY WITH YOUR INTERPRETATION - I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR THEM]] I read Thomas coming back with the locket as the monster arriving to taunt the hero. The monster won, it has erased her and who she was. In the end despite all her struggling and violence against it, it comes back without malice or taunting, it sits there, reinforces the narrative its trapped her in in front of everyone and then as the final gloat gives her the locket. The only thing left that is tangible proof of her erasure and what she was before it did its work She can tell everyone "look, I have this locket, this is proof!!" But its already won and re-written her reality. She can shove it in a million peoples faces and she will to the people who see it always just be that crazy woman locked up in a little room, out of her mind. It mentions when she finally looks at him thst theres a subtle twitch in his face, the same twitch she notes every time she pushes back against it through the story. That little spark of defiance to its narrative that's always pissed it off. Honestly the descent into madness was so slow and gradually ramped up that I could be entirely wrong.

Similar to Isaiah's interpretation, I see this as a Fey Trickery. Thomas is weaving this deception with Suggestions, and Glamours that become more effective and more lasting the more doubt gets sewn into Eve's mind. All to do a reverse Crib Swap where instead of replacing your child with a Fae, the Fae worms his way into your home. I think that's what happened with Abbigail, and I think that's how he got her to work with him with the promise that he would exchange her freedom for Eve's. Truly an amazing story in how well it treads that line of what is real or not.

Not sure how I feel about this one. The beginning is great but I think I struggled more with the madness vs truth dynamic in this one. I think the story leans into Eve Palmer being the “true” identity but I think there is fruitful ground here left unexplored. Not everything needs to be explored as identity but I thought the story might delve more into who is believed and who is not, and the reasons why. I also think the gaslighting aspect might work better if our narrator could be part-convinced to believe in it, and she herself has to make a conscious decision to find out the truth, however much she might not want to believe it. Still really enjoyed it!

I agree with Isaiah’s take because of two points: 1. Why would Charlie wear the locket containing a photo of the person she is taking care of? That feels really weird unless they actually were dating in the unaltered reality. 2. Why would the story ask “Where is Abigail Going?” If she is just the same person as Eve? I feel like that question is trying to point out they are two different people more than anything.

For as often as it has come up, I think you guys should read House of Leaves. It's such a great journey, as I'm sure Isaiah can attest. And there's such wildness with the physical book itself that you would not be taking money from the publishers, or rather it would be asinine for them to use that excuse as the physical book is itself an art piece. If there's any published book from Horror Canon that deserves to be on this show, It's House of Leaves.

I think if you came by one day and introduced yourself, and let the current owners know you want to see the place; you could simply give them your info after the conversation and ask them to let you know if there i ever a convenient time to walk around the house with your family. For example. My grandfather built my dad's family home and we had that home until it was lost due to a shitty situation when I was 16. That home means a lot to me and my family and I would eat my shame and try to see it again for sure.

I can see where hunter is coming from but an “it’s all in your head” approach doesn’t feel right especially when you consider ‘Abigail’ might not be the first one and that Thomas is some kind of entity obsessed with his ‘sister’, supported by abigail’s journal that says “my name isn’t abigail” or i think that’s what it said i may have gotten it mixed up, i doubt any discussion will come of this comment but i wanted to give my two cents

the Appalachian grabber · September 14, 2026

I agree with you. A shutter island type ending doesnt feel satisfying or like the type of story the author would write. I would love a prequel to the story to know more about thomas and abigail, this is one of the freakiest stories they have ever read! so much to think about

2:31:00 Okay so this is ultimately unimportant but I need to point out that the Winchester house is in the middle of Silicon Valley. I live five minutes away from it and regularly forget it’s there. It’s not even a blip on the local economy. And while I don’t know of any local Winchester house escape rooms, a local mini golf course has a Winchester House themed hole 😂

Z
Zushi · September 14, 2026

Hunters just directing the intruder in the house like it’s mission impossible through his PA system. “Woman. Upstairs. Left room at the end of the hall.”

Can we please do a poll on who agrees with hunter's interpretation vs Isaiah's? I'm very curious which the majority falls to. I personally agree with Isaiah's that the situation is 100% supernatural

J
Jaleen James · September 14, 2026

I was excited to listen to this one because I read the novel last summer and I thought it was an acid trip the entire way through. I was hoping that listening to this would sway me in one direction or another in terms of deciphering the ending but to be honest I'm still stuck in the middle (though I think I sway more towards Isaiah). Great book and great episode! ❤️
