Family Emergency in Puerto Rico

Hello friends. My mother in Ponce had a stroke. She's not well as the stroke was severe. My family is with her now and I arrived not too long ago. We're currently coordinating getting her rehab care, though home care will be likely in the foreseeable future given rehab space here is very limited and the care system on the island is a slow moving beast.

I don't know how long this is going to take, but, there will be an obvious slow down on my work while I'm down here. If I get some free time I'll model here and there given this isn't just a job for me, but helps me relax and center myself. But, I'm going to focus on my mother's care first though, then worry about myself, then if I somehow have time maybe I'll make some art here and there.

I know you all understand this and will be patient while this is happening. You've all been wonderful and supportive people. I'll keep you posted on how things go within reason. Take care of yourselves, hug your loved ones if possible and I'll be around.

The sooner physical, occupational, and speech therapy start, the better the outcome will be. Advocate for her and push to get services started as soon as the doctors say she is ready to start. The best thing you and your family can do for her is to be her voice to push for the best care she can get, not to accept the best that the insurance is willing to pay for. Her doctors should be willing to help you present the wording that will get the insurance company to cover more than they would normally cover in her situation. 16 years ago I got really sick and spent a month between ICU and the post-op recovery ward. Initially the insurance company wanted to send me to what was basically a nursing home instead of a real rehab center. The doctors at the hospital would not discharge me until the insurance company cleared me to go to the best rehab hospital in Arizona. At 41 I was the youngest patient there, and the only one not recovering from a stroke. Instead of being too impaired to ever work again, I was back at work again, as full time tech support at the local university 6 months after getting sick in the first place. The permanent damage was "just" nerve damage in my feet, but if I had gone to one of the facilities they initially offered to send me to, I don't think I would have ever gotten the physical therapy I needed in time to keep me from being wheelchair bound for the rest of my life. They had just about talked my wife into accepting it, but my mother and my doctors were not about to put up with it.

Go and be with your mom. I don't usually comment like this, but your post struck me especially at the moment, as my mom just had a stroke two weeks ago also. If anyone gives you crap because you're caring for family, then they are the one's with issues, not you. Make sure you take care of yourself and family also!

We'll all still be supporting you 100% once this situation is resolved. Really, take all the time you need. Family is so important, and the ceaseless effort you give towards your generous contributions to this community would greatly benefit making sure your family's needs are taken care of.
