Key's Nightmare!| Moonshadow EP 7 | Uncut Reaction

Chan and Key have officially been dating for two weeks, but their little bubble doesn’t last long. Chan’s mother arrives, seeks Key out alone, and uses the most painful parts of her past to make her question whether she deserves to be with Chan.

This episode finally shows what Key has been carrying beneath all that teasing and confidence: childhood abuse, repeated abandonment, and the fear that loving someone will only bring them harm. Key has worked on these wounds in therapy, but being confronted so cruelly brings that old fear rushing back.

Episode 7 „Full Moon“ starts as Key, Chan and Chanya continue to argue; Chanya claims that it was Key who interrupted the board meeting, and Key admits it. Chanya wants to know who she thinks she is, and why does she date to meddle in the work of her hotel? Does she want to show off that she’s her daughter’s sugar baby? Key apologizes for interrupting the meeting, and vows to be more careful next time, but she argues that she’s not Chan’s sugar baby (anymore), she is her girlfriend. Chanya argues that Key is an outsider and wants her to get out, so that she can talk to her daughter. But at this point, Chan rejoins the argument, claiming that Key is not going anywhere. Chanya claims that she never taught her to behave like that, and asks why she changed. But Chan argues that she hasn’t changed, she’s just not afraid to be herself and chooses to do what’s best for her. She tells her mother to leave because she doesn’t want them to fight. Chanya wants her to tell Key to leave, then. Is she taking sides with an outsider instead of her family, she argues. But Chan claims that Key will soon become a part of their family, she argues – which astonishes both Key and Chanya. But Chanya claims that this girl is not good enough for her, or for anyone in their family. Chan argues that it’s her decision who is good enough for her, and tells her mother to leave again, because she doesn’t want to fight with her anymore. At this point, Sun arrives and takes her mother home; Chan and Key hug. Sun and Chanya later talk at home as Sun in learning lines in bed. Chanya argues that she can’t let Chan ruin their family’s reputation, and she needs to help her talk some sense into Chan. Sun claims that Key seems like a nice girl who comes from a well-known family. But Chanya argues that her mother was the second wife, and she was scandalous and had a long list of bad behaviors, she thinks her daughter is not much different from her. Sun claims they are two different people and they shouldn’t judge them, but Chanya claims the that apple doesn’t fall far from the tree because children learn from their parents. Sun claims that she can tell Chan is serious about Key, and that it doesn’t matter what kind of person Key is. She argues that Chan has thought it through before dating her, but her mother argues if that were the case, she wouldn’t have been worried. But she’s even thinking about marrying her, she argues. And she can’t let that happen, she has to stop this. Sun argues that Chan has never disobeyed their mother and always does what she tells her and claims that is not a big deal. She wants Chanya to let Chan do what she wants for once, but Chanya declines. The next day Chan and Key sit together drinking something as Chan claims that her mother is the real final boss and is worse than Jay – who overhears this conversation. Chan calls her self-centered, and Key needs to be careful, as she doesn’t know what she will do next, and claims she has never backed down. Sun comes over, asks Key whether she has met mommy, and argues that the fun has begun. Chan asks her whom she calls mommy, but Jay claims that Chanya told her to call her mommy. Chan argues that she is close to Jay’s aunt and probably said it for the sake of their friendship. But Jay just wishes Key good luck and leaves. Key gets a call… …and later joins Chanya in her home and thinks she should get to the point. Chanya asks if kids these days are like her, and Key claims that everyone is different, but argues that if she knows that someone is trying to pick a fight with or look down on her, she won’t put up with it. Chanya claims that she is disrespectful, but Key claims she doesn’t use violence with anyone, she fights back with reasons. But Chanya claims that she’s just talking back to her, with Key arguing that it depends on whether she is willing to listen to her or not. Chanya argues that no kid has ever talked back to her like that, she gives the example of Jay who grew up in Western culture, and is always respectful to her. Key asks if Jay has seen Chanya slap Chan and argues if she had, she wouldn’t have been respectful to her. Has this convinced Chanya that they can’t coexist. She argues that Key is not good enough for her family and thinks she should leave, arguing that there’s no point in trying to make it work and they will break up anyway. But Key vows that she will never break up with Chan because someone tells her to do so, and argues that the only way she will leave her is if she asks her to. Chanya asks if Key thinks that Chan will choose her, and if she’s good enough for her. She asks her if she thinks she is different from her mother, and mentions all her scandals, her uncontrollable temper, and argues that she was ill. How can Key be sure, she asks, that she won’t have the same illness? She argues that she will damage Chan’s reputation, just like her mother did. Chan comes in at this point and takes Key out of the line of fire, with Chanya arguing that Chan is crazy for doing this to her. Chan claims that she loves her mother, but asks her to stop saying hurtful things to the woman she loves, and argues if she won’t stop, she will have to protect her girl. They both leave, and Chan later is glad that Sun told her about it, arguing she couldn’t tell what would happen if she weren’t there. Key argues that she could handle it even if she wasn’t there. But Chan claims that if her mother does something like that again, Key needs to tell her right away. Key holds Chan’s hand and claims she likes it when she is protecting her, and Chan promises to never let anyone hurt Key again and vows to protect her for the rest of her life. Key asks her if she loves her that much, and Chan of course does. Key feels a bit bad, because she is causing a problem and making her stressed about protecting her. But Chan tells her not to worry, all she wants is for her to never let go of her hand. Chan kisses Key’s hand, and they hug. Jay returns home to find Chanya sitting with her aunt. Chanya wants to talk to her, and Jay would have come home if she knew mommy wanted to talk to her, but Chanya claims it’s okay and she can wait for her. Chanya needs her help, her aunt claims, and argues that she will be happy to help her. Jay asks if it’s about Chan, and Chanya confirms it, doesn’t think Key is a good match for her, and argues Chan deserves someone better. Jay agrees with her, but claims she already tried and failed to break them up. Chanya wants to know if she going to give up, and argues that Chan is so into the girl that she doesn’t listen to anyone, not even her. Jay claims that she doesn’t listen to her either and she didn’t want to give up, but she knows Chan well and argues that right now, she insists on being with Key. Her aunt is sure that Chan still has some feelings for her, and if she keeps pursuing her, there will be a rift between them. But Jay wants to ask Chany something: if Chan broke up with Key, would she support her relationship with Chan? Chanya claims that of course she would. Jay asks if she would support them getting married, but that’s too far for Chanya (because of course, she is homophobic…). Jay knows that Chanya would never support Chan in marrying a woman and claims that she isn’t stupid, so she refuses to help her. She apologizes to Chanya and leaves. Chanya thinks that she needs a backup plan, and Jay’s aunt has an idea. Jay is having another nightmare, where she is reminded of her mother scolding her, and she wakes up in Chan’s arms with Chan trying to console her claiming that it was only a dream. The next day, Key is sitting in Chan’s office practicing with her guitar, but she stop because she fears that Chan looses focus on her work. Chan claims that if she wasn’t there, she wouldn’t be able to concentrate on her work either. But Key claims that she’s fine, she had only a bad dream last night. Chan wants to know what the dream was about, and claims that something is bothering her, but she refuses to tell her. But Key doesn’t tell her and claims it’s not a big deal. Phu comes in, and is happy to see Key at Chan’s side, because her girlfriend asked him to help prepare a surprise for her. It’s a couples photoshoot done by Peach, where Chan and Key strike many poses, and Key thinks it too much after only two weeks together, but Chan claims it’s okay because Key is her girlfriend. Later, Chan proposes to post the pictures, and Key wants to know if they’re going public with their relationship. Chan argues that it’s better if they reveal it themselves instead of appearing in gossip news. Peach claims that if they go public it will create a buzz – but Phu claims it already does, but not in a good way, and claims they are too late as he shows them some gossip news about them on the phone “hotel CEO Chan dates daughter of late short-fused actress.” He mentions that people are digging into the past of Key and her mother. Key is shaken by the news. Sun and Chanya read the news as well, and Chanya claims that she told her that girl and her mom had a bad track record, and claims that Sun and Chan are dragged into this as well. Sun claims it’s just gossip news, but Chanya claims that Pin, Key’s mother, was mentally ill. What if the illness is passed down to her? She remembers Pin as a celebrity and a troublemaker, and there were scandals about her losing her temper and having outbursts. She claims that Pin lashed out at staff of set, she also left the set for no reason and was lucky that her husband helped cover it up, otherwise, there’d be even more scandals to talk about. Chanya thinks she was a piece of work, and is afraid her daughter won’t be much different. Sun wants to know why she knows so much about Pin, never having seen her this interested in anyone, and suspects she is behind this. But Chanya denies it and argues the scandals about Pin were widely known, and after she killed herself, people became more interested in them. She remember reading the news which said the Key was the first one who found her body . Sun feels so bad for Key, but Chanya argues that Key is also a piece of work, she is said to be a tramp and scandalous just like her mother was. She claims to be good at reading people and is sure that Key will cause a problem for their family, especially for Chan. Key is having another nightmare, in which she encounters another version of herself, who scolds her for coming back and agues Pin killer herself because of her. Her other self thinks Chan will die because of her, everyone will die because of her. Key awakes shaken next to Chan, with Chan trying to calm her down. She tells her that she’s back, and argues that something bad will happen, but Chan doesn’t understand who she is talking about. Chan wants her to come to work with her the next day, but Key claims that Chan has a meeting the next day and claims she will be fine. But Chan is worried and wants to assure her that no matter what happen, she will be by her side. Key wants her to go back to sleep because otherwise, she would wake up late for work. They fall asleep again in each other’s arms. Chanya comes to Chan’s meeting, and Chan wants to know if she’s doing this to pressure her. Chanya claims to have to protect the hotel’s interests, and she is not sure if Chan is in her right mind enough to effectively run the business. The executives informed her that Chan walked out of a meeting because of Key and were upset about it. Chan argues that the meeting took too long and everyone in the room seemed to be tired, but Chanya argues that it’s not okay to wrap up the meeting when they hadn’t reached a resolution. From now on, she will attend every meeting and help her manage the hotel. At the bar, Key and her band are playing again as Chan comes in and smiles, but then faints. She is taken to her office, where she eventually awakes, and Key asks if she’s okay. Key and her assistant Game what to take her to a doctor, but Chan claims that she’s fine, the meeting just took too long and she didn’t eat anything. Game claims he will go find something for her to eat and leaves. Key claims it’s her fault that she is sick, Chan denies that notion, but Key claims she saw her in her dream again. Chan doesn’t understand what she’s talking about, and asks her what she saw in her dream. Key doesn’t answer for a while, clearly shaken by her dream, but then snaps out of it and claims she is fine and it’s really nothing. The next night, she is having another nightmare, with Pin suddenly appearing at her bedside and repeatedly claiming it was her fault. The other Key joins in from the other bedside. She open the door to her mother’s bathroom and finds in the bathtub again and suddenly she hold the knife that Pin used to slit her wrist in her hand – and she thrusts in into Chan’s torso by accident. She finally wakes up next Chan, but eventually leaves the bed, claiming that she’s sorry to Chan. The next day, Key is nowhere to be found and doesn’t react to Chan’s calls or messages. She eventually calls Sun and tells her Key has disappeared. Sun tells her to calm down and call Peach. Jay overhears her aunt, who tells Chanya on the phone to just keep pressuring her like this, so that Chan will give in one day. She argues that there has been a lot of backlash and Key’s past behaviors are quite scandalous and she’s the black sheep in her family and surely not good enough for Chan. Jay wants to know what she did, and she admits that she helps Chanya because Jay refused to do so. She claims that what she is doing will benefit them, but Jay wants her to stop doing this. But her aunt claims that it’s good for her and claims she doesn’t like that girl either, but Jay claims that she will never ruin anyone’s life. Her aunt argues that she will lose if they don’t do this, and she doesn’t want to see her come home drunk every night. She is worried and is trying to help her, she claims. But Jay tells her she loves her, but wants to be left alone, she doesn’t need her help. Chan is with Key’s family at their estate, and Peach tells her that Key used to have bad dreams when she was young. Her father adds that he thought they were gone, but argues that every time she has this dream, she runs away. Chan wants to know what this dream is about, and big mom recounts that after her mother died, Key started to have nightmares, and saw herself in those dreams – but it wasn’t her, it was a Key who was lonely and scary. Key told her that it was the shadow that kept haunting her in her dream, and it kept telling her to leave everyone. It called her bad luck, and told her that she was the reason why bad things happened to her mother and everyone she loved. Her father continues to tell that Key kept blaming herself after her mother died for being the reason why her mother decided to kill herself. But Pin had mental problems for a long time, and her condition was getting worse, when she was pregnant with Key. Big mom adds that Pin believed that her life was ruined because she gave birth to Key. And Peach claims that Pin was unstable and sometimes she hurt Key, and sometime she took her out and abandoned her outside. And every time that Key found her way home, Pin’s condition got worse. Her father tried to help Pin get help from doctors, but guesses he didn’t do a good job at that. He thinks it’s his fault that things turned out this way. Chan claims that when she was in college, she met Key in the mountains when she went there to watch the stars. She reports to have found her walking alone in the forest. Peach is astonished to find out it was her who saved her back then, and Muan argues maybe it’s destiny. Chan asks if Key was abandoned there by Pin, and Peach confirms it, claiming they were looking everywhere for her, but they couldn’t find her. And she refused to tell them what happened when she suddenly returned home. Chan remembers her first meeting with Key, as Peach report that afterwards, Key started blaming herself, because not long after that, Pin decided to end her life, and Key was to first one to find her body. After that night, she was haunted by the image and kept having bad dreams about it. She had seen a psychiatrist for a long time before she got better. But even so, she decided to move out and live on her own. We see Key getting carried through the country side by a bus. Chan asks if anyone knows where she might be, and Peach claims Key ran away several times and didn’t contact them at all. When she felt better, she would come back. Her father thinks that they should look for her, and Chan wants to help them. The final shot of the episode is of Key sitting alone in a hotel room and crying, with Chan vowing that she will find her. ____ To me, this was the best, but also the hardest to watch episode so far, because it dove head first into Key’s trauma and emotional damage, with Auntie and Chanya happy to put pressure on her until she finally cracked. Jay really surprised me this, for not joining Chanya’s plans to break Key and Chan up – but she knows that she wouldn’t have a chance with Chan anyway. I haven’t read “Moonshadow” but “My only sunshine,” so I’m both surprised that Chanya is still alive (as she had died at least in the Star Hunter series) and that Sun appears to be single (as she had a girlfriend at the end both the novel and the TV series) – but they are frankly side characters in the show which centers on grief: Chan’s grief, Key’s grief and to a lesser extent also Jay’s grief. I found this episode to be very compellingly acted by Key who has the most emotional damage to present. I look forward to them tackling Key’s damages in the rest of the episodes.
