Living the Dream. Sailing, Fishing and Crafting with My Man - Episode 204

Good morning patrons

Wow what an amazing couple of weeks! It began with sailing and squidding in Shark Bay, then onwards to the Abrolhos Islands. On the way we catch our biggest yellow fin tuna yet and once safely snug in a windy anchorage, Troy teaches me how to make Dyneema soft shackles.

We'll also have a better idea of future plans by the end of next week so stay tuned and we will update you as soon as we can. Apologies for the suspense but we have to be certain that what we have planned is going ahead before we tell you all.

With gratitude

Troy and Pascale

For us too...

I'm a fan of dyneema too. Until recently i was a zealot to be honest. However, i just rescued my boat from beaching, the 2x dyneema header lines (that were just inspected by a mooring contractor and were in top condition and rated at about 18tn each - 8tn boat) snapped. Its not invincible and really watch out if there's a chance of a dynamic load. My mooring has a 25mm chain spring - so plenty of dampening, but yet.....

Strong agree. We won't use anything but nylon line for dynamic loads. When commercial diving, we would tow a string of dories in some pretty heavy weather so there was lots of slack then pull- lots of tons being generated. One of my mates decided to use dyneema instead of nylon and, when we got to the reef, the compressor had sheared off its mounts and cannonballed around his boat. Absolute destruction. There is nothing around to compare with the amount of stretch in good quality 3 strand nylon, once chafe is addressed.

'Sensational'! Im supplementing my (and my daughter's) formal education with your videos. Now to buy some rope/line and learn soft shackling myself. 😃

Just be aware that soft shackles are designed for the construction of dyneema, not multi layered lines. The button knot can be practiced on anything though. (I have made buttons with them when far from resupply and my favourite boarding are at risk).

Thank you Troy and Pascale, a very informative episode. I have been doing my soft shackles differently and they are much more work so I am switching to your version! Ben S/V DAWN

There are many varieties and they might be justified by greater strength but these are quick and simple and its good to have plenty of spares in case a trip to the foredeck reveals some wear.

Such an informative episode guys 👏. Pascale your laughter & giggles are tunes to our ears. Going to try changing some of the current shackles on the Red Witch to those soft ones, the current ones are getting bit rusted. looks fun to learn. Cheers guys 🍻🥃

They are fantastic tools and fun to tie but just be aware that a metal hole that has had a metal shackle previously, may have sharp edges that need dressing before a fibre shackle can be used reliably.

Loved this episode! Nice sailing footage. Mirrool looks so great sailing to weather! And enjoyed see you harvest two of my favorite foods. I have been wanting to make soft shackles for some time now. I may finally give it a go based on your excellent tutoring. I'm looking forward to hearing about your future plans when the time is right to let us know.

Things are coming together nicely so it won't be too long now Scott. I can recommend this channel for other very good tutorials on splicing etc. https://youtube.com/user/Premiumropes I was going to do a few videos on working with line but didn't feel I could add anything after seeing these excellent videos.

You two are so crafty! Love it! Now I am going to have to do soft shackles too!

Beware the rabbit hole when you start mucking about with dyneema!

The paint and varnish on my boat are going to like the soft shackles. Thanks for the lesson.

A definite benefit. The hard clips on our harnesses are hell on paint but have the edge over soft shackles with speed and single hand operation. I do loathe them all the same.
