New Sails for our Southern Ocean Sojourn - Episode 168

G'day folks

This video brings our refit series to a close as we take you through the fabrication of a new suit of sails for Mirrool.

We depart the marina to test our new sails and Dyneema rig, talk about some of our decisions relating to heavy weather preparedness and take a closer look at lashing our stays and shrouds.

Our recent patron meet up was a wonderful experience. As always when we meet with you it reaffirms to us that we're following the right path because of the good people that have chosen to join us on the journey.

We hope you enjoy the video.

Yes, the battens are full length and I'm happy with the shape of the sail when the wind goes light. I haven't any experience with non battened or half battens mainsails so my opinion is not worth that much. The halyards are 8mm for grip and therefore much stronger than required if tensile strength was the important factor. The rope is the same colour because it is cheaper to buy in 100m rolls and we have very few lines to memorise. The clipper crews used to know several hundred lines all of hemp! The performance was proven by an average speed across he bight of 6.2 knots with a sweet 300miles done in two consecutive days.

Very interesting and helpful to me as I will be in the market for a new main soon as well. I noticed full length battens, do you think they are improving your performance? Your halyards looked pretty light are you down to 6 MM? Also all the same color don’t you like to use different colors for different applications ? I would have one of my 2 jib halyards a different color and my Spinaker a different color than the rest of them. I am excited to here more about your performance on a voyage with the new rig and sails. It would be exciting to see if your performance over a trip is improved after the changes. Wonderful work on the video as usual. Thank you Troy and Pascale. Ben S/V DAWN

While music is nice using it at the same time as when conversation is going on makes it much harder to follow the conversation. That said love the videos, stay safe.

Yeah, there are definitely a few reefs down here! I need to update my electronic charts. Yes...I’m carrying a full set of Caribbean Sea paper charts as backup. Hurricane season is coming and I have to get some sea miles under my keel. (I hate sailing single-handed, but the trade winds are predictable. I’m still looking for a sailing partner...

Yes, sharing a boat with the right person definitely multiplies the good times. Good luck Doc.

A very interesting episode for me as I am currently setting up a Solent stay. While all the refit episodes have been useful and interesting, I am looking forward to seeing some more sailing. The episode in which you sailed down to Broken Bay remains the best half hour of sailing on the web.

We were greatly relieved to sail again and we have compressed the timeline considerably to bring you out on the water with us sooner. We hope you enjoy the coming bight crossing.

Fantastic! Love the sails. You definitely haven’t “stuffed up the boat”, she looks very impressive now! You guys have set the bar high for us lowly mortal refitters....

Mirrool has been getting some lovely compliments in her new guise but we are also very happy with her performance when no one else is around to notice. Very rewarding.

It is really amazing to watch a craftsman in his element. Watching the sails being made was fascinating. I’m sure you can have every confidence in those sails for some time to come. Also, just watching you work your way around your rig was incredible as well. Great episode.

Russell and Dylan are boat experienced racing sailors as well as good craftsmen so were able to give good advice as well as execute our requests.

The new sails look fantastic, and it was great seeing the loft and process of designing and making them. Looks like you found just the right sailmaker! The soft shackles and frictionless rings, along with the Dyneema rigging are extremely compelling. I've got one frictionless ring and soft shackle deployed with lots of plans to slowly implement more. Refit Mirrool looks absolutely fantastic under sail!

That sounds like a wise approach, implementing change gradually and learning as you go.

Wow! Next week sure looks exciting!

Whenever the sea ignores the dodger and the wet weather gear is donned it is exciting!

Another great Episode guys. I am leaning more and more to rigging Ngarlaa with Dyneema as it certainly seemks strong enogh to cope with the loads. Thanks for sharing all thius great knowledge with us.

T
Troy and Pascale · April 21, 2021

Yes, the sizing of dyneema to account for stretch (creep) means that you end up with rigging that is twice the tensile strength of steel rigging. I'm unsure of the importance of weight aloft in a vessel that doesn't heel but it has been great for our little mono.

It's so interesting to see how different aspects of the refit affect the boat (especially with this episode's focus on sails / rigging). I appreciate you guys working hard and sharing your experience!

T
Troy and Pascale · April 21, 2021

The different aspects make her go faster!!! The next few episodes will show the gaps in what we did and things we did to address that.

Doc Paul · April 20, 2021

Splashed on the 16th and sailed to St Thomas, US Virgin Islands single handed and anchored last night. You guys definitely rock it!

Congratulations! Hope the approach in the dark wasn't a stressful occasion. I remember having a few interesting encounters in the dark over there.
