Our 9 Month Sailboat Refit Complete! - Episode 167

Well we did it. We crammed all the last refit items into one final episode. I hope this one is filled with as many nuggets as the previous installments.

With thanks to all of your support we were able to put aside some money to purchase a new smaller profile M1 Macbook Laptop last week to edit our videos in DaVinci Resolve. We're opening the box for the first time this afternoon to have a play around. Fingers crossed it performs as expected as it will have a much smaller footprint in terms of space and power requirements on board. If all goes to plan we're hoping to edit next week's SAILS episode on it!

Until then and with our most sincere gratitude

Troy and Pascale

Enjoyable to watch Marrools' transition and have joined your travails and victories along with you . Could the gap between the mast and deck electrical connection pose a potential tripping point for a foot twixt deck and boom when stepping down to the deck ? .I hasten to assure you that I. don't mean that as a criticism merely an observation. Whatever, the Marrool looks a million dollars and probably sails like an angel, Bravo ! for the effort and thought you have both put into her. !

T
Troy and Pascale · April 21, 2021

The trip hazard exists but we move along the deck with a careful step and it is a very obvious thing. The previous cable run was there and never caused a problem in 7 years as the usual thing to find with your toes tend to be unobtrusive things like cleats or stanchion bases. The biggest problem to free movement is getting tangled in our harness tether!

Great job. Now remember the pain so when some chap comes along and says “ay mate that’s quite the boat you have there” and offers you a pretty penny, you won’t be tempted to take it and think, we’ll make some money and do this again. Don’t drink the cool aid. BTW, my own boat is now also done, and my 64 years of age say “ never again”. Take it from the old guy. Sail, live love and enjoy. Oh...lol, I’m not a gadget guy, I just like my drill winch conversion. You can see it on my YouTube page.

Do it again! Haha, we need the time to pass before we forget this year and dream of another big refit. (Yes I know it will happen)

It is so amazing to see the passion/drive/care for Marrool that you guys have

Most excellent fix it video, team! The layout of the video is top notch and kept me riveted. Marching through that list. I'm sure it was essential to stay focused on the important tasks, as you can VERY easily slide into so many other things along the way.

Thanks for the edit, really enjoyed the refit series. FRS is my friday lunchtime treat here in the UK :-) ... and good luck with Resolve and the "Nodes" !!

T
Troy and Pascale · April 21, 2021

Haha, yes the nodes is a bit of a rabbit hole!

Have loved all your refit videos. Thanks for sharing as know the filming and editing etc took time away from the work needing to be done. Much appreciated.

Really have enjoyed the refit videos and have picked up so many ideas. Love the boom mounted awning which I'm going to adapt for our new catamaran, thanks for the inspiration. Is there a "Guide To Refitting" book and video series sometime in the future? Looking forward to the sailing videos. Cheers

T
Troy and Pascale · April 13, 2021

Thanks Nigel. No plans for any guide I'm afraid but that is because both Nigel Caulder and Ron Casey have, between them, done such a very good job of covering everything most people might want to know on the subject. During our videos, we try to include those solutions that might be unusual or somewhat unique in the hope of stimulating people's creative powers when thinking of their boats.

Troy.. Marool is a very lucky lady to have found you, she sure looks great for being 50 years old. Maybe I missed the episode (if there was one) where you told the story of how you acquired her / the condition she was in / what year that was, and what you paid? I've always been curious too about the name "Marool" is there any story, it's a word/name I've never heard before. Thanks, Rob ✍️)))

Mirrool is a town in NSW. She entered the Trans-tasman under that name but was renamed Freelance. Happily, she has had her historic title restored. The previous owner had a blog and if you look through it, toward the end is a note of when we met and I bought the boat. Link: https://russwan.wordpress.com/03-sailing-voyages/2012-cairns-sailing/ She was in fair condition but the repairs have been pretty well covered over all of the various refit videos. She sold in the upper $20k

Hello Troy and Pascale a wonderful and very informative episode. I think I mentioned previously that I rebuilt my seafood as well. My previous one was wood that rotted and was eaten by termites. I took the less hi tech route of using Coosa to fill in and build up between the rails and above all reinforced with epoxy and glass. It isn’t removable like yours but works well and looks like it was part of the boat from the factory. Very impressed with your use of the cam lock fittings for the through deck, I have only seen them used for fire hoses! Is there a reason that you don’t use white butyl tape? Thanks for your hard work and sharing your ideas so nicely. Ben S/V DAWN

T
Troy and Pascale · April 13, 2021

White Butyl?!! If only there were such a thing here! We can only source black in our primitive condition. Regards those cam locks, any pump install using cam locks means service and replacement of the pump doesn't involve wrestling with hose barbs and rusty clamps. Also enables pumps to interchangeable in case of failure of an important pump. The uses are endless and we will be showing some more later.

Wow you two have been extremely busy especially with those nuggets!!! Good luck with the M1 Macbook. I am looking forward to seeing the new sails and rig in operation Cheers to Troy and Pascale from the East coast or more properly the Central West of NSW. Graham.

T
Troy and Pascale · April 13, 2021

Thanks Graham, we are excited to see how the new system goes with cutting our power requirements but we are thinking odd ways to supplement it all the time. Makes for good videos!

Oh yes! Wonderful nuggets in this one too!! I especially like your awning on the boom track that secures in place. Sunbrella is amazing material! I need to redo my awning/ sunshade and will definitely be using Sunbrella, but I doubt I can retrofit a track like yours. Just today I anchored for a bit in a bay before coming in, and was reminded how awkward my ground tackle is to deploy. It is completely substandard! I have some unique challenges with no chain locker, and very little room on the foredeck. I have some thinking to do on how to improve it.. And I love the countersink tip for deck fittings. I've redone several that way, but have many more to do... Looking forward to sails episode next week!!

T
Troy and Pascale · April 13, 2021

Is anchoring over the stern an option? I do like canoe stern boats for that possibility but many boats are square stern. Fishing boats use a fore mounted reel to stow the road but it isn't very pretty.

G'Day My Friends :-) I LOVE "Fix-it time. It is much of what I do. I don't have a relentless ocean to fend off but the critters, our weather and the wish lists from "Animal Care" staff can keep me busy! I am jealous that you can still get butyl, I used to use it all the time. Tim

We have never looked at our boat job list and not thought it to be infinite plus one! I always laugh when someone tells me they are going to buy a boat and retire.
