Hunt and Gather - Episode 92

It's goodbye Gladstone as the wind offers us a break and we get in some fast sailing to Pancake Creek.

Troy discusses the effectiveness of our traditional spear to hunt and we go gathering yabbies for whiting bait with a yabbie pump. We take a more in depth look at processing stingray as food, demonstrate one of the ways we like to de-hook fish without touching them and show you some of our secrets for cooking delicious whiting fillets.

Cheers

Pascale

Guys your videos and exploring of our wonderful country by sea and coast just gets better and better. You are extraordinary story tellers and I have no idea why TV stations or Netflix etc are not putting each episode to air as you produce them - they are simply fantastic馃槑. I鈥檓 sharing with everyone we can think of and wish you safe travels and fair winds!!

We are more than happy to produce these videos with your support rather than answering to TV networks and big business that's why we appreciate what you do as our patron so so much. Thank you also for spreading the word! Troy and Pascale :)

I've heard of an Octopus's Garden before but this is the first sting-ray get away I've seen! ;-) Seriously, I've gotten kind of bored with obligatory drone shots all across YT but this was pure delight! Love it, love seeing you two so happy!

Troy and Pascale 路 August 2, 2019

We were wary of getting the drone because we didn't want to fall in to the trap of doing "standard" drone shots or using it as a crutch. So we are always thinking of ways to use the drone a little differently to what you might see elsewhere. I bet if we were taking aerial shots of 4m crocodiles you'd be perfectly happy with hours of drone footage ;-)

Nice new computer!! As a construction plumbing designer (plumber by trade) I rely completely on a capable computer, as do you. If you can get a programmable gamers' keyboard you will save yourselves a tremendous amount of time entering repetitive commands.Beautiful segment and videography! Cheers to you!

Thanks David. Great minds think alike, we're currently learning about customizing the keyboard in our editing software. PS- We both bought gaming computers now to do our editing because of their powerful CPU and GPU. In addition Troy upgraded the RAM to 32GB (he said that's the closest he can get to a marine supercharger nowadays :) )

You two transport my mind. After each video I sit and relive the mental snapshots I took along the way while watching... happily dreaming... then slowly recovering to the present... refreshed. 鉁嶏笍)))

That's a very poetic reaction to one of our humble videos and very rewarding for us both to read. Thanks for sharing your enjoyment with us Robert.

Wonderful to see you collecting yabbies for bait. Reminded me of collecting sand crabs for surf fishing as a lad in San Diego. We also used mussels, collected off the Mission Beach jetty at low tide, then steamed open in a big pot over an open fire... Perch would steel our bate, but we could mediate that by securing the mussels to the hooks using thin strands of seaweed. Happy times!!

T
Troy and Pascale 路 July 26, 2019

You can't imagine how much we are looking forward to getting mussels regularly as part of Australia's southern cold water bounty. That trick with the seaweed is a beauty and will be part of FRS lore after a few trials to perfect it.

Hope your stingray was enjoyed by the other cruisers in Yellow Patch. A rare treat! 馃檪

T
Troy and Pascale 路 July 25, 2019

At Yellow patch there were no takers but the shares we handed out once we got to Pancake Creek were very well received. There was a young guy there as well who was very interested to see how the spear was constructed.

Hi guys, when I was a little rug rat my granddad use to pressure cook herring in vinegar guts eyeballs scales and all. Us kids use to squabble over the spines (the only crunchy bit left).

T
Troy and Pascale 路 July 25, 2019

Thats some double punch combo! We are reluctant to use vinegar in our pressure cooker because it is Aluminium but I could see it working very well once we upgrade to a Stainless Steel one. I bet it would tame even octopus pretty efficiently.

Really exciting those from above drone views of the fish and stingrays. Imagine if you found a whale and have your drone up and available... Great stuff ! Thank You.

T
Troy and Pascale 路 July 25, 2019

We are hoping to bring two specific creatures to you with our drone; Whales and Manta Ray seen from the sky. Till then, we will keep coming up with ways to add new dimensions to the videos with our little Mavic. It excels at dolly shots flying low.

I鈥檓 a big pole spear hunter, but have never taken any stingrays. Might have to try one. Finally invested in a speargun, though it seems like cheating! It鈥檚 all about dinner. Good one...keep up the great work. Doc sends

T
Troy and Pascale 路 July 25, 2019

The speargun is definitely easier on the arm! I used to use a polespear when very young but haven't picked one up in years. I am fascinated by the idea of Hawaiian Slings but I'm reluctant to practice with them as the poor old fish will be the ones to pay for my bad shots!

Pelican scabs Lol, Ya gotta watch em they sneak up behind you and pinch ya dinner

They look so graceful gliding in over the water then turn into a floating comedy as soon as they alight or to see them waddling about on land.
