A Very Fishy Affair - Episode 64
Join us as we spend our last few days at the Broadhurst Reef restocking our fridge ready for our return to Magnetic Island and Townsville. We go spearfishing on our final dive at the reef and Pascale goes on a magic Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) date with Meg from SV Sarean.
On our return to Magnetic Island, we encounter fickle winds despite a weather report to the contrary. Pascale brings in a decent sized Spanish Mackerel and shows you how we smoke it with Casuarina wood that we collect from the beach at Horseshoe Bay on Magnetic Island.
We'd like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas next week. We are currently sailing south of the Whitsunday Islands and we're not sure where we'll be for Christmas. Cyclone activity means that our plans have to remain very flexible.
In that regard we may not have enough internet connection (or power - it's really cloudy at the moment) to upload a video for you all next week but, if we can, we will.
Bye for now and we will get in touch with you all in the New Year (if not sooner).
Troy and Pascale

Have a good Xmas guys, thanks for the years worth of content and your open nature’s.
Thanks Ron and we'll look forward to hearing from you in the New Year.
Another great video, really can't wait for the cookbook as you guys really know what your doing, merry Christmas and stay safe, I am out for my first sail on my newly purchased Farr B30" a test drive before my kids get at her.... 😂
There is some strong demand for Pascy's Cookbook! Congratulations on your new boat, we hope it brings you (and your kids) a whole lot of happiness. Christmas on the water?
Wonderful video!! Loved it all... Fantastic diving footage, and the paddle boarding with Meg was awesome! That smoked mackerel has my mouth watering even though we had very generous chunks of salmon off the grill here tonight. Merry Christmas, my friends! Hope you are gifted with fair winds and calm seas!!
Thank you Scott, Merry Christmas to you too! We're on a fish famine at the moment nothing is biting, fingers crossed we have something in the fridge for Christmas lunch. Troy just purchased an inflatable SUP board for the ship's complement, we're enjoying using it as our new tender now that the crocs are better behaved.
Another well done video. I especially like the overhead around 11:18 where you can see the Manta Ray top left. Its huge. What an amazing place to visit.
That ray wasn't apparent to the girls and Pascale was really excited later when she saw the footage. Those boards are a very good way to see wildlife out on the water. They're very non-intrusive.
Smoked Wahoo - WAhooo ! Yum. As usual in the butterzone baby (thats not about butter in Australian) Slippery as an Eel in a barrel of oil. Even a Tom Cat Howls when it gett'n it. Rooster today Feather Duster Tomorrow - Red Berries and Cyclones (Myth) ? Excellent Stuff off the Grid (mostly) XX Pete
Haha, the red berries crack was my joke to Pascale how every year the local shamans predict a 'BIG STORM SEASON THIS YEAR MATE!' with a wide range of fantastical omens. Sometimes they're even right!
Another Wonderful Video Guys, that drone footage really made it look like the Ladies were SUPping (didn't look right saying that you were drinking) above a Forest. I think the Drone was a good investment Video wise, as well as an aid to shallow navigation, I am impressed with how steady the picture is from such a small machine. As usual Pascale's food preparation has my tummy rumbling, and I can imagine the taste of the smoked fish from here. I woke up early this morning, unable to get back to sleep so opened the Kindle, Oh look, Patreon Post so I had to take a peek! What a fantastic way to wake up on a Sunday Morning, and it's still only 5:26 GMT ! Thanks for making my day already.
Start your day with an appetite! We are restricted to fairly calm weather for drone flying but you're right- it's ability to get rock steady shots is a bit of a game changer.
:)
(O:
That looks so lovely. The drone makes for nice intro shots I reckon.
A very good use for it. The list of things I want to try with it is long and growing.
A Merry Christmas to you too! Stay safe, and remain calm.lol
Casuarina! I love most things Australian but not these trees. They are rather invasive along the coast of South Florida. I grew up calling the "Australian Pines" but I just learned that a family name is "she-Oak"! Running around barefoot, those are not nice trees, but the not-cones made great projectiles ;-). I'm falling asleep, so I'll watch the video tomorrow, AFTER I finish my scuba "refresher" course :-). 2 Boat dives in the morning! I needed to prove my qualifications for a boat dive in Hawaii in a couple of weeks, I'm off next Friday for Maui and family for xmas. The dive is off of the Island of Lanai across from my brother's home on Maui. The name of the dive spot is "Cathedrals"! :-) I'll try to keep up from there. Fair Winds and following seas my friends!
Cathedrals sounds like a good place for a Christmas dive! Hope you have a great holiday with your family in the warm Hawaii weather and good luck with your dive refresher course tomorrow!
A Merry Christmas to you both. Up in the northern hemisphere, especially in Canada, smoked Goldeye and Sturgeon are two of the best standards for smoked fish. I had to laugh looking at you folks in the tropics on a coral reef, sunshine and bathing suits while my dogs were outside cavorting in the snow. Although my sailing was confined to a land locked lake and a Hobie, could identify with the lack of wind, nothing like being caught out on a lake, platter flat with zero breeze, let alone any sort of wind. All the very best. Keep well. Love the videos, as usual!
Thanks Thomas. What sort of dogs do you have? It's one aspect of life that we miss out on a bit.
Oh, that smoked fish! Delicious. My mouth was watering.... I won't mention the drone shots of the ladies as they paddled over the coral. Nope, won't mention it. OK, I will... Fantastic!
The reef looked like a forest in those drone shots. Amazing viewpoint.
M X & H N Y to you m8's! From –28°C (–18°F) in Sweden
A real white Christmas!
