A Birthday Bait Ball with Boobies (or The Passage that Nearly Broke Us) - Episode 48

In this episode we continue sailing south and face some of our hardest sailing on the passage. Taking shelter at a protected islet, Pascale gets a bait ball for her birthday and some boobies drop by for a visit. When the weather clears, a little, we leave the islet and head to Tijou Reef and experience some of the excellent free diving the Great Barrier Reef has to offer.

Featuring:

00:34 How to secure sheets in strong winds

2:20 A brief discussion on voltage regulators

16:26 Cooking up some foraged Australian bush tucker on the fire

This one is so good we couldn't decide between the 2 titles of what to call it! We hope you enjoy!

That's some hard sailing done. I know that feeling of being slightly or very sick and very tired at the end of a long day like that so 'good effort'. Oh....and happy birthday Pascale

Very, Very Many Congratulations for your recent Birthday Pascale. I'd like you to remember a saying that I heard once but have never forgotten, 'Age and Mature if you have to, though promise me this, NEVER GROW UP, Grown ups are Boring !' I don't think that either of you will have that problem, ever. Another wonderful Video folks, and Troy, 13.8Volts rings a bell for vehicle 12Volt system charging, as you say though Current limiting control. Well explained Sir.

Cheers Andy! I might just have several 32nd birthdays now so I don't grow up too much.

Happy Birthday, Pascal! And a well deserved day of celebration after that 16 hour slog in challenging conditions. That looked really tough, guys! Thanks so much for taking us along. Excellent to see how you managed it, as well as schooling us on how you make things secure in preperation for high winds at anchorage... Loved the diving segment, and the tasty looking tidbits on the beach. Another fantastic episode!

Cheers Scott! It was the toughest I've experienced so far. You weren't disgusted by the snails? Pascale

I forget if I've told you my Boobie story. For quite a few year we had a Brown Boobie with a non-fixable wing as a permanent resident at the Wildlife Center. She lived in with our brown pelicans and I'd always get the question "Whats THAT one? when I lead school groups through on tours. The standard reaction was pretty predictable, but I did have to go get a field guide once to prove to an irate parent that I wasn't making it up!

Saturn Return 30 years + 2 - post 30 is you really know what life is about have a grounding - and if you are a French Chef Free Range Quality - you cannot miss - I feel that you and Co. have been a relationship made to be together - your videos speak volumes on the trust, modesty and experience going on here. I really appreciate the cooking and living off the land experience because its so real and respectful take only what you need and no imprint of destruction. Indigenous ways are " in balance " even burning of the bush was controlled - in small moderation on the mild winds - not destruction. The reef is so very sensitive to changes - love the virgin reef - those fish look like they have never seen a human... or a clumsy dugong XX pete

and yes Happy Birthday Pascale 31 ~ there is lots of life yet. Beating into sea's and current is exhausting. Loved the bush cooking and the Reef. Its so noticeable on us clumsy humans when we are there - looked like a pristine barrier reef scene so much going on there - I noticed the reef shark having a rest when you guys arrived in the water ... Ahh something is different... same as the small fish The Groupers (Old men of the sea) seemed a little perturbed but held their own. Looked like very healthy reef undisturbed - you were the " safe " foreigners XX Pete

Thanks Peter, 32 years around the sun and feeling great about it! The reef was in excellent condition very healthy and the fish behaved like they'd never seen humans before!

you've reached a milestone, from now on no more birthdays, just anniversaries of your 32nd birthday. I did that for many years until the anniversaries got over 32, then I had to pick a new number. :-)

Great plan totally down with that Orville!

Happy Birthday Pascal another big year ahead. Awesome vid guys you were really doing it tough bashing into the wind. I know how that feels and I how tired you must have been.

T
Troy and Pascale · August 27, 2018

Happy Birthday Pascal, I remember 32 - won't mention when that was. Still working on the frame for the Hammerhead shark print. My cleaner came by, as she does every other week, so I put the print in a "safe place". Took me this long to find the "safe place". Both my kids (your age) love that I have a personalized description from you about the print. More later. Tom

T
Troy and Pascale · August 27, 2018

Thanks for the birthday wishes Tom. We can't wait to see it framed!

Troy and Pascalle, have you ever entertained the ideal of fishing with salt water flys for some of the fish you catch? I have done some fun fishing for Permit and Grouper with fly fishing gear. Very exciting! Not sure if it would work from the deck of your vessel, but perhaps from the dink. Just a thought...

T
Troy and Pascale · August 27, 2018

In our episode Australia's Best Kept Secret pt. 2, we do break out the flies for a little action. Lately the wind has been too ferocious for the long wand but it shall return.
