Lovers Torn Apart! Episode 41
What happens when the cat is away? Will the rat play (with the sharks)?
In this episode we head to Somerset Ruins, once touted as the Singapore of Australia and Cape York; the northern-most point on mainland Australia. Then it's back to Thursday Island where I take a ferry, a bus and 3 flights to Perth leaving Troy behind in the Torres Straits to fend for himself.

How do you make a hot toddy for cough. Pour hot water into mug and steep tea for 2-3 minutes. Remove tea bag and add honey, stirring to dissolve. Pour in whiskey, add squeeze of lemon, stir and find relief.
Thank you sounds like perfect remedy for that future cold lurking!
Wonder which name came first “Passion Fruit” or “Granadilla”.. I’d not heard of Passion Fruit before I came to Australia, back home they were known as Granadilla’s.. I believe there may be a slight difference, a Granadilla may be slightly sweeter than the Passion Fruit which is more acidic. After 4 years we finally have Passion Fruit on our home grown tree, unfortunately the crows have decided they want a sample of each one and destroyed most of the crop so we have a huge net over the bush now, covering the only one that wasn’t pecked at!
I hope that remaining passionfruit is delicious!
I'm familiar with the set up. Had an issue with a dicky solenoid once in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Had to pull it apart and found corrosion in the plunger. BOAT: bring out another thousand.
Broken down again! hydraulic pump for auto help shat itself, new one on it's way. In Brizzy at the moment. You should launch yourown spotify channel Cheers Nige
Hey Nige, thanks for becoming a patron! Was the pump problem electrical or internal in the hydraulics? We are definitely planning on putting together a Soundcloud and Spotify playlist but we've got a few more jobs to get through first, be patient and we'll get to it.
I've really enjoyed catching up with all the videos you released while we were traveling (by car, not sailing alas!)... Thank you for all the wonderful episodes! Hope your feeling better now. Ear infections can be aweful, even with good medical attention. Hopefully you've had it all checked out while in civilazation, and are, or will be on the mend soon, as well as reunited with Troy!
That infection was surprisingly tenacious and recovering from our took some weeks. Air travel is also a bit of an immune system challenge after so many months in sailing quarantine!
Might want to eliminate the plane ticket shot. Covered up one instance but not both. Thanks for all the great adventures you bring us!
Cheers Beau
A great lesson that Paperbark (maleluca) isn't JUST a nasty invasive exotic tree! Here in Florida it is highly problematic but I enjoy seeing it its its rightful place. Causurina (What we call "Australian Pine") also has issue in our part of the world but its not as big a pest as Paperbark.
We'd heard Emus have gone feral in Texas too! We use Casuarina as our wood for smoking. Not as good as some of your traditional chips but at least one more use for a rampant Aussie tree. Apparently the Italians used Australian gums to reclaim lowland swamps, sticking the water table down. I wonder if Paperbark made it there for that purpose?
Pascale, how did it feel to be around so many people and a totally different environment from the boat? I always feel a little strange and out of place when I travel by land and air. Loved the video of the old resort, looked like it was and interesting place to visit at one time, a little sad to see it abandon. Troy I really like the way you narrate your videos, always full of information and explanations of what, where, how and when, you make a great travel guide. Thank you both for what you give to us, your followers.
A little weird at first but so good to see friends and family. Working full time for 2 weeks (at my old florist job) meant that the time went really quickly. I don't like plane travel at all but sometimes it's necessary!
Hopefully I’ll post a video or two myself - but I’m eager to see how you guys approach it - your knowledge sharing is sooo appreciated!
Plan to get her wet in April 2019. I am renewing everything! So far, we have stripped her and fixed all the critical issues (mast compression post and engine). Now doing repaint inside and out. Next, new standing and running rigging, and over Christmas - plan to replace all plumbing and electronics! So lots of work - but I should end up with a new vessel set for extended cruising!!! Fingers crossed!
Wow that's sure going to keep you busy wishing you the best of luck with everything. We'll likely be getting stuck into a bit of refit ourselves once we hit Townsville.
Title rather melodramatic. Thought Kennedy's trip might have contained more details. Look forward to post Cairns excursions.
I guess not everyone gets our sense of humour... We're looking forward to them too! A couple more weeks here and we're out to the Coral Sea.
Perfect timing - released at the start of my lunch break! Only 4 weeks to go before I’m back onboard for my summer holiday. Even though it’s 3 weeks of sanding, painting and fibreglassing, I’m still excited!
yay! so exciting for you. Will you get out on the water once the maintenance is done!?
Great as always. I think I would have had to try and catch one of those. Drove me nuts having huge tarpon swimming around the boat every night in the BVI and nothing to catch them with.
Cheers Steve - think it would be a bit of trying to catch one of these. One of the crew on the Faucroy said as soon as you throw anything in that is not a live Garfish the sharks won't go for it. Who would've though fussy sharks eh!?
Another excellent, informative, and entertaining video. That water looks a little bitey.
They're some fierce sharks in the Straits!
