The Long Way Home - Episode 39

Hi Patrons

This is the last episode in a series of three that feature amazing Ashmore reef. We find a couple more stunning dive locations and pass on a little of our knowledge about some of the fish we encounter and see if Sea Snakes are the deadly killers some people think they are.

Cyclones to our south are making for a change in the weather and we find our trip back to Thursday Island is not a straightforward affair.

Come for a look far off the beaten track with us.

We hope you enjoy it!

Troy and Pascale

The family really loves this episode. I think I've seen it 4 times now. So beautiful through our stereo (great music Pascale!) and on the projector. Miela is entranced.

Hope she enjoys diving with us when she's a bit bigger (not long now!)

Hi Troy and Pascale, my children (Arlo, 3 and Lucia, 6) and I are absolutely loving your episodes, especially the freediving at Ashmore. We would like to come along and say hi when you get down to the Sunshine Coast or Brisbane. Cheers!

We would be thrilled to meet your family. We'll keep everyone updated on our progress and hopefully meet all our new friends along the way.

I'll see if I can put it up again - I think I may have accidentally deleted it, we were building new seats for our dinghy yesterday...

still a work in progress so I'll give you some update shots when we're nearing completion at the end of the week. Cheers Pascale

Did I miss the "Lens" window? I can see a shot of Troy as a teaser but clicking takes me to this vid :-(

"thanks BOM" Troy always as dry as a Sao! We love it!

T
Troy and Pascale · June 20, 2018

Haha cursing BOM is pretty standard around here. I was going to edit that bit out but left it for comic effect, so I'm glad you enjoyed it! Pascale

T

I had no worries with them over in Vanauatu either. Perhaps being calm and moving smoothly is the key. I'm used to handling animals from a young age, especially ones mum said not to touch. No doubt Harry Butler and Rob Bredl had a lot to do with that. I've worked with guys from Vanuatu and they are terrified of those snakes. There can't be a positive interaction in that circumstance. I don't expect others to enjoy their company but the tip of getting them looking at your find them pushing them away is effective as long as people keep their head and stay 😎 cool

Excellent video.. thanks. The extra info on fish species is impressive - regular Jacques Cousteau's ! Interesting confidence about the sea snakes. My father mentioned some were docile and many were not. In Vanuatu they are very aggressive. It may relate to the local natives that hunted them ? hence there defensiveness - I was surprised how confident you were handling them - they are superior swimmers to us in the water / Care to elaborate ? Cheers Pete

Go T &P! Love watching your channel. I feel like I’m SO Close to start boat seeking actively. You’ve got me looking at refitting costs.

It just keeps getting better. Thank you so much. I need to find myself a snorkeling buddy (and some clean water. Thats a bit of a problem on my part of the Florida Coast right now, I'm afraid :-(

That was us celebrating not only clear water but a lack of hungry crocodiles for a change!

Wow, that was a great episode ! I’m 59 years old and have yet to step foot on a sailing vessel of any kind, but I’m really enjoying your channel. Travel and adventure has a universal appeal I guess. Carry on you two !

We always hoped there would be something here for everyone what ever their preferred style of adventure.

Hey guys, so great to have you back. So much enjoyed the descriptions of all the reef fish and snake. Noticed that you were not doing any fishing. Is it because most (all) of these reef fish could possibly provide Cigaturra poisoning? Carry on and sail.

T
Troy and Pascale · June 18, 2018

No fishing in this episode because the fish shot in the second episode was enough for our stay. In such abundant areas we don't fish again until the last scrap is gone as we know feeding ourself is going to be easy.

You reminded me of my underwater navigation exam when I swam into an Emperor Triggerfish’s territory! I still have the fins - with big chunks missing out of them!!! Thanks for another wonderful vid!

I've seen a few funny moments when divers have their first Trigger fish encounter. For some reason I've never run afoul of one.
