Hi Troy, Many thanks for this. It is a big help.
You're welcome Bret
Hi Troy, this is off topic but I could not find a place to put it. Can you give an idea of the routine annual cost of running a 32 foot sail boat per annum, around Oz, assuming no catastrophic failures of rigging, or engine and excluding marina fees? (or perhaps shove this into a new thread or a section in one of the videos maybe?)
The maintenance costs of most boats can be assumed as 5-10% of its value to hold it in good condition before adding upgrades or as you say, failures being accounted for. I think that works pretty well for estimation purposes in my experience. You'll notice that we never do one of those 'how much it cost to sail.....' videos because I also subscribe to the Bernard Montessier view that cruising costs whatever you have! Australia is an expensive cruising ground if you aren't foraging and the remote areas can be murder if you don't carry a good stock of spares (freight) but the $1500/month rule often quoted by world cruisers should cover most contingencies on a small boat. Others will have different ideas but that's my thoughts for what they're worth.
You might want to consider starting your Patreon at $1.00. I think you would get a lot of extra supporters at this lower rate.
There is the option to contribute a dollar and those people still get access to the wall here, even if Patreon words it as you don't want anything else in return. Perhaps we can make this clearer in our video.
Ok, I think I have the writing of comments down. If the others posted and I'm repeating myself forgive me. I have never used patreon before! As I said before if you created an account I would (modestly) contribute. You have amazing content and I really do think you will be pleasantly surprised by the results. I look forward to your videos every week. I can tell you are fairly private people. Having grown up before the advent of social media I am also. Hopefully patreon can give you the comfort to share some of your back story/who you are with a few people, rather than many anonymous people. I think if you share many of us will as well. I would guess we are a weird and interesting lot! (I've got the weird down anyway).
When Pascale returns, we'll put together something, patron only to give you some background. It really is a popular question. Give us a few weeks.
Hi there, I'm fitting out my boat which is very similar to yours and it's doing my head in. I like seeing boat your systems, storage, what's good and what could be better on your boat. Last night I was trying to get the engine lined up and used the plastic packing you did, thanks.
Thats great we could help out. We will be doing more how-to and info segments. Some will be on the YT page but some will be patron only- particularly if we can save you some money.
Wow... turns out Patreon’s edit can be a harsh Mistress... Let’s see... Is Pascale a formally Trained chef? Her means to turn out such scrumptious meals of such a broad variety is remarkable given the limited stocks and galley. Also discussion of your auto pilot is excellent! I’d love to hear more of that and the reasons why the different setups. So far they’ve been excellent. Presently I’m studying your fishing techniques. The recent discussions regarding the poly line -v- the braid. And the sea around northern Oz blows my mind! You two are such a remarkable pair... and you so clearly love each other and your chosen avocation. You’re blessed and remain ever so humble. Which I presume is the right attitude in a harsh world around you, despite Your making it look SO EASY... which I know it is not.
Thanks Make. The different set-up was just to provide food for thought to people looking to design their own system on that principle. Once you show people a concept and they get their head around the why, they tend to do a great job of formulating the how. Pascale isn't formally trained, that's just natural talent and passion for doing things well. Yes we do love each other as you say and that smooths over a lot of trials we face doing this and as far as humble, I think Pascale has that quality in abundance and some rubs off on me!
I would really like a croc awareness preparedness session, even though Troy has promised one at the pub down south!
If we do one the live pub presentation still stands though!
Ok recipes are always good, We cant wait to make some Yachtie’s Chocolate Mousse thanks for that one :-) Outtakes are always funny :-D Any stories that happen when you don't have the camera on that are humorous or make you think 'What would we do in that situation' Updated location so if Patrons are in the area they can look out for you, Maybe shout you a Rum or two :-)
Thank you Cal and Di! We'll do that for sure. We're getting sent a SailTimer unit which is supposed to hook up to our GPS and send our location online which we wanted to post on the Wall for our patrons so you know where we're at any time. (fingers crossed it works!)
Anything you find interesting will do. Your posts so far is so well put together.
