Returning here after the announcement of Shadows of the Past, where Peter Jackson and Stephen Colbert are pitching to insert a “lost act” into Fellowship. And…I’m just not sure it needs it. Removing the 6 chapters of Frodo’s journey from the books was a narrative decision that served the film incredibly well. The sense of urgency it created was the driving force of it. The 17 year gap, the barrow wights, even Tom Bombadil himself (who I believe to be the most unfilmable character in literature) detract from that urgency. Growing up, I was too exciting to see my favorite books come to life to view the films with any criticism, but likewise, I was too young to extend any criticism to my favorite books. Looking back now, at the weapon of mass destruction contained in that envelope, the URGENCY Jackson and co. injected into the narrative was the correct instinct.
Yeah I was just reading about this Colbert thing. Still processing how I feel about it. Think it's worthy of a video? Not sure what I would say beyond "I have doubts, but I hope I'm proven wrong". But also as you point out, there's probably a good reason why that section of fellowship didn't get included in the film.
Andrew, if you haven't visited NZ to see some of the filming locations, I encourage you to put it on your goal list. I went about three years ago, and it was a great way to not only see the movie locations, but also learn a lot about the country itself.
Oh believe me, it's on my bucket list of things to do. My parents have been twice, including visiting Hobbiton, and they tell me it's amazing.
I really appreciate that you have turned yourself into a character for the patreon bits.
Lol I have this awesome Gandalf costume that I got for Halloween a few years ago and I've been getting a lot of mileage out of it.
