Would love to see you get into this show!
Another FYI about the intro in the full song version: it sounds like Gagaku, which is traditional sacred court music that was played for ceremonial occasions and is associated with the Shinto religion. The piercing, high-pitched, clarinet-like sound comes from a double-reeded instrument called the hichiriki. Gagaku has a very unique sound that evokes a sense of mystery and other-worldliness, and between that and its Shinto associations, it seems like a very well-placed addition to this song. Jujutsu Kaisen itself is heavily based on and steeped in some very animistic and Shinto ideas. In Shinto, which grew out of ancient folk beliefs, all things in existence are inhabited by spirits, and if not treated with proper care and respect, these spirits (which include those of people, particularly the deceased) could become disturbed and bear grudges or behave with anger or violence. Often in anime you see spirits and other magical or mythical beings translated as "demons" but this is not really a very accurate representation because of the kind of religious associations we have with the word "demon" in English. I think they are more appropriately compared to the fae folk of the British Isles and northwest Europe. They are tricky beings who can't be easily categorized as good or evil, they have magical powers, they often trick or trap unwitting humans, they have their own system of rules and values, but at times they may also act for the benefit of humans. Jujutsu Kaisen is packed with these sorts of beings and ideas, and while fictional, it's an absolutely fascinating world and window into some aspects of the Japanese worldview and experience.
An FYI as a Japanese speaker, not having watched most of the video yet (by the way excellent choice of anime, this is one of my favorites): the kanji characters for Jiu-jitsu the martial art (by the way, the different spellings are just a reflection of different systemic attempts to romanize Japanese sounds, both jiu-jitsu and jujutsu are both the same sounds in Japanese) and jujutsu from this show are different, because in spite of being pronounced the same, they are different words with different meanings- basically homonyms. Jiu-jitsu has the kanji 柔術 meaning "soft, gentle" and "art, skill, technique". Incidentally, that martial art in modern times in Japan is now named Judo (with the same kaji for ju that means soft or gentle, but combined with do meaning "way, path, road"), whereas Jiu-jitsu is now more closely associated with the Brazilian style. In contrast, the kanji for jujutsu from the show is 呪術 meaning "curse/spell" and "art, skill, technique" so the first kanji is different but the second is the same. Kaisen, meanwhile, is 廻戦 meaning "rotate/revolve" and "battle/war". So the title translates roughly to "revolving battle of cursed techniques" or "cyclical sorcery war". Thought you might find that to be useful knowledge as you start the series!
Btw with everything going on with my husband's cancer treatment, I've been completely out of the loop on what's new with anime this season...usually I'm super on top of it and have a spreadsheet of what I want to watch that's coming for the next two seasons lol. I remember noting that season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen was coming, but completely forgot and didn't even notice it had started! Gotta get caught up now!
King Gnu is a really cool band, I'd say this song is one of their more pop heavy songs. I'd recommend checking out King Gnu - Hakujitsu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ony539T074w The song is unique and experimental, would love to hear you break this one down!
King Gnu is a band with 2 singers, one plays guitar and tbe other plays keyboard.
Yes, there is technically spoilers in the animation but unless you read the magna or knew what is coming you just will not know. Plus side it will be fun to look back on once you know. Now, yes King Gnu does a lot of anime music, in fact he also did the previous Jujutsu Kaisen opening "Specialz". Also to answer a question, yes the main singer of King Gnu does write his songs, sing lead vocal(usually there is a second vocalist though he usually does harmony), and he is also the lead guitarist .
Technically it has spoilers in the intro but unlike aot there’s no way you’d know what any of it means even if your caught up on season 2😂
The new anime season is starting so a lot of hyped shows have gotten tons of cool songs.
