POSSIBLE NEXT ANIME SERIES? Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 Episode 1 (SUBTITLES)

Wow, I love the 'monster of the week' feel of this show, reminds me of shows like 'Fringe,' 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' or even 'Scooby Doo!'

Thoughts!? Is this our next Anime to watch as a community?

You have got to react to Demon Slayer/Kimetsu no Yaiba openings and endings, and also to the First Take editions.

I really, really recommend watching the rest because it's great! It's also for entirely selfish reasons because I really like your reactions and this is one of my current ongoing faves :) This is a genre of anime that is typically aimed toward a teen audience, but people of ALL ages enjoy it. It’s called a ‘shounen’ anime, and shounen means ‘boy.’ A lot of them revolve around magic of some sort and action. Attack on Titan actually does fall into this category, just with a significantly different tone. There’s always a driving action to overcome an enemy to save the world in these sorts of anime. Typically, protagonists and their ensemble run into stronger and stronger enemies over time, which means they have to ‘level up’ in some way and they get increasingly wild powers. I think Attack on Titan really is an anime that crossed cultural lines because it's more digestible with its more western setting. It also has an excess of drama (not that it’s bad) that not all shounen anime stick to consistently. Thus the instances of comedy that surprised you are more common with action packed, dramatic moments and themes interspersed throughout the narrative. Some silliness isn’t quite understandable because it comes from a different culture that essentially has its own inside jokes. Some new anime watchers are put off by that. You’ll have to ask about them, and I’m sure you’ll get great explanations, but I say just roll with the punches. You’ll get the names eventually, just remember that in Japanese, the last name comes first, then the given name last. It’s complicated, but if one is not familiar enough or given permission, one will stick to calling a person by their last name. I won’t even go into honorifics. Different monster, different day. Also, ‘sensei’ means teacher. You’ll get a lot of that.

Don't worry *at all* about it being "too young"- it's not. There is some really heavy, dark stuff in this anime and it gets darker and more serious as it goes on, with just enough comedy/levity to keep readers/viewers from totally despairing. >.< I'm 40yo and I would *maybe* consider letting my 16yo oldest son watch this (together with me or his dad) if he really wanted to. He's read the AoT manga and watched a couple of those episodes, and watched Demon Slayer, and I think JJK gets darker, honestly. It has really incredible story, music, and art- it's a masterpiece in many ways- but it's definitely pretty mature thematically.

Only thing with JJK is that it’s very intense with a lot of sad moments and is known for it haha

Senpai (senior) and kouhai (junior) is a social relationship that exists in almost any organization in Japan. In a high school setting like Jujutsu Kaisen, any upperclassman (relative to you) is your senpai, and the underclassmen are your kouhai. Generally speaking, you're supposed to show respect to your senpai, addressing them formally and doing what they tell you to do. You're also supposed to give guidance to your kouhai and act as an example/role model for them. There's also lots of informal rules, like when a senpai asks a kouhai to a meal, the senpai pays (and a kouhai would never invite a senpai, that's another rule.) This relationship is most evident in junior high school and high school, but it can still be found in university as well as in corporate work settings. A side-note about Japanese high schools - I like to joke that all anime takes place in Japanese high schools which isn't completely true, but there's a bit of truth to it. High school in Japan is different than in the US. Junior high and high school are each three years, but the biggest difference is that high school isn't compulsory, and there's generally a difficult entrance exam to get into high school. High schools are often specialized in their curriculum, so there are high schools focusing on the arts, or sports, or university preparation. It's not uncommon for students to commute significant distances to go to high school, or even live away from home. In many ways, it's more like a junior college in the US than high school. Because high school students are given their first real independence and ability to manage their own lives, even in small ways, it makes sense that anime focuses on this foundational phase of Japanese life.

JJK is really good but in my mind you just can’t beat the classics (wow I sound so old). When I think of music and anime the first one that comes to mind is Cowboy Bebop. It is older (anime was released in 1998) but so good and only 26 episodes. Fullmetal Alcemist: Brotherhood is also a really good anime. Death note is also a great one. Best part is all 3 are finished and their episode count is manageable. Why I won’t ask for One Piece since we are over 1000 episodes and it is still not finished. From the more recent anime’s, Demon Slayer is good and has great music.

Oh, yeah, Cowboy Bebop has jazzy music but there's also a mix of everything from country to funk as well.

I'd love to see a reaction to this! I am not fully caught up yet but I have enjoyed what I've seen

I would love to see an episode one reaction to Frieren as well! I think whatever you pick it will be popular. Frieren is really special musically, has season 2 airing in a few days, and would definitely be my number one after Attack on Titan. Regardless thank you for your anime reactions recently.

I never finished this anime, and that's not me saying it's bad! I would actually very much like to get back into it, and if you watch this it'll be my chance to!

Senpai is an honorific used to refer to those that are senior to you. Sensei is teacher. I hope you keep watching JJK it is amazing. Anime is so interesting because you have ones like AoT that start pretty serious and stay pretty serious. JJK has more chill and comical themes compared to AoT but gets darker and more serious as you get farther into the show. Other anime, for instance Spy x Family, tend to be primarily comical and light hearted through out with some heavier moments here and there. Any anime could be any variation which makes it so fun cause you never quite know what you're getting into!

I highly recommend the anime Gachiakuta (dubbed) as the next series. You’d find the music in it super interesting they use a lot of samples.
