Mamamoo BACKSTORY & KILLING VOICE DEEP ANALYSIS

I loved that so much, they are a unique group! So playful and experimental. YES!

CORRECTION: I said ENTHY(ph)en instead of Enthypen. :)

Hello! New to Patreon 👋 I have been recently watching your content on YT and decided to subscribe here to get more content ❤️ Loving it! I don't know if it has come up since this video, on a live or in the discord; Hwasa is her stage name. For stylistic preference and romanization of Hangul for English speakers, it is usually written as one word. It is two syllables: 화 (Hwa) 사 (sa). Another name that gets me is Baekhyun from EXO. It is 백 (Baek) 현 (hyeon), but romanization with vowels is often aligned with English speakers so as to not confuse them. So his stage name is Baekhyun. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into these reactions! 🙌🥰

Newbie to Patreon. My first subscription. Female kpop stan. Loving the kpop journey so far. I’m not sure how/where I make suggestions for songs. Any help from the community would be greatly appreciated.

and SUCH an excellent point about pressing your voice.....as someone with perfect pitch, it's actually sometimes a little....not difficult, just instantly noticeable.....that while Wheein always absolutely nails the pitch, Solar can be not even a cent (like a half cent) flat on her notes. Like I don't think anyone would really notice that or even point it out but its why I prefer when Wheein sings vs Solar even though Solar is SUCH a power belter all the time whereas Wheein goes into falsetto more often

and another fun tidbit.....this channel, Dingo, initially only had a series called Killing Verse where rappers would come on and do the same thing but for rapping. Mamamoo asked the producers to expand it to singing so they could come on since they were such fans of the series. In a way, Mamamoo is the whole reason the entire Killing Voice series exists

fun little tidbit that's kinda amazing.....Hwasa (far right) actually had a cold while recording the Killing Voice

they definitely do have a Top 3 lightstick, it's literally a daikon radish. The synergy bt their group name, their fandom name, and their lightstick is one of the best in kpop. (and just a SLIGHT correction.....moo is a daikon radish, not moomoo....that's literally just saying radish radish)

I have been a moomoo since 2016, and they really are the best of the best for live vocals and putting on epic performances. They did not disband, Wheein and Hwasa did not sign contracts for solo music, they are still a group and are planning a new album for june of 2026 and a world tour. I did see them on their last world tour in 2023. For some unusual videos that really show off the talent, I suggest a search on them doing a Pikachu song, you even get a moonbyul belt in that. There is a training video Solar and Wheein pre debut no cool, im sorry and also shows Solar's piano skill. Another is Search Solar and Hwasa Save me from myself, unreal(there is a video with wheein in it also but harder to find). And for mamamoo+(subgroup of Solar and Moonbyul, look for the live version of save me acoustic and watch the MV for it also. Solar is my favorite singer, not really bias in the group I love all 4 of them, I mean worlds favorite singer, she has a lot of content on her youtube, such as one of the best michael jackson man in the mirror covers. No one seemed to have commented this was the very first killing voice, thanks to Solar. She pestered the killing verse producers relentlessly to do a killing voice until they did and mamamoo was the first group. They all really can do everything, each specializes, moonbyul rapping, Solar's mutant lung belts for example but if you check out their solo music, you will see all of them doing pretty much everything for vocals and rap. And watch the immortal songs videos. You will be impressed again.

Mamamoo is so good. Really glad you got to check out their Killing Voice! I also cast my vote for you to check out their immortal song medley!

Ahh yes, can't talk about vocal focused K-pop groups without talking about Mamamoo! They are still active but focusing on solo work - all 4 of them have very distinct styles, it would be fun if you did a video focusing on each member! Here are the songs I would recommend for each member - Hwasa - Good Goodbye, Wheein - Goodbye, Solar - Blues, Moonbyul - Absence (these are just my personal favorites that I feel showcase their vocals). And yes, Immortal Song Medley is a MUST if you want to hear them all belt and hear their vocal range.

Silent Night · December 17, 2025

You should definitely check out their immortal song medley, all their vocal on full blast, especially when. She belts more in their earlier days

S
Silent Night · December 17, 2025

They still together as a group, they haven't disbanded. Just focus on solo now

Maybe also worth mentioning that in 2022 Moonbyul participated and won first place in the JTBC reality competition program Second World. The show had 8 female KPop rappers competing against each other showing off their vocal abilities. Here a compilation of her stages: https://youtu.be/MEu3ne8_pTU?si=NEY8snAFnhmMsOE6

Since you watched them stand still and sing (killing voice), watched one of their music videos (HIP), now you need to see how good they sing live and dance at the same time with an audience. they really shine. Wheein is my favorite voice in the group. She doesn't get as much attention when people hear them for the first time since the other members voices are so unique as well, but there was a saying floating around the internet that "Once you Whee-in, you can't Whee-out" LOL Moonbyul was originally training to be a singer but after joining Mamamoo, she took on the role of rapper. I believe she does write her own rap lines although i don't know exact details like when she started or which songs specifically...

Norbert Follrich · December 16, 2025

Moonbyul seems to write her own raps since debut. According to Wikipedia she has writing credits for 125 songs. She also has already such a vast solo discography. And she doesn't only rap in her solo songs. One of my favorites is Eclipse. https://youtu.be/oCTqcTe1lIA?si=HzUsBkF3dMMNHW86 And of course her duet with Seulgi from Red Velvet. https://youtu.be/diwrEUG6gBg?si=gK2dFZhL_IqOigwg

A silly personal note - the only Mamamoo song I've heard before watching THIS video was "Hip" and I watched it because I kept seeing the thumbnail come up on YouTube and they are all wearing the HOTTEST hot pink outfits I've ever seen. I was dazzled, had to see more. I'm just a bird following shiny objects, really. (song is a banger though)

Time to watch their Immortal Songs Medley. This was a medley of their performances from the tv show Immortal Songs that they did at their concert. its kind of old, from 2017, but still a classic. I went to their LA concert a couple of years back and their live singing was glorious. https://youtu.be/h3YCi0qBMzs?si=FVOUNmtKRmCmiiOe

Oh, and Tim, you misspelled ENHYPEN! 😉 But it was correct for the poll!

Yes I know! I was talking about how I was saying it with a pH sound in the vid.

One thing I've been learning as I get more into Kpop and maintain my little duolingo streak is that the Korean language is culturally very tied to age (you speak differently to people who are older than you than who are younger than you) and sometimes to try and figure out your age without asking directly people will ask/share their Zodiac sign instead since it's tied to the year you were born. They also seem obsessed with the MBTI. I don't know if that's related to anything specifically cultural, but it really is shared in every single interview, variety content. They bring it up in casual conversation constantly 😂

H
Handsome Hayeon Can't Hurt You · January 19, 2026

as a korean person, its super common to just straight up ask what year you were born. In the west it's considered rude but in korea it's necessary bc the culture as a whole is so hierarchical and obsessed with defining groups. Even well before MBTI, blood type was super important. Us koreans are super obsessed with putting people in specific buckets (which is both good and bad) but as far as age is concerned, yes, how you speak to someone younger than you vs older than you determines how you conjugate your verbs in korean so it's super common to just ask a person's age. As far as zodiac, obvi korean people know but it's not as important whatsoever (in a weird way, your chinese zodiac is WAY more important). I don't know, as a korean person, the guide that Tim watched was kind of crappy in all honesty

Little fun fact, Hwasa was actually sick during this recording! She still absolutely killed it. I love Mamamoo so much

N
Norbert Follrich · December 16, 2025

Funny, Tim already commented on Solar's vocal fry when he reacted to her Golden cover! 😁 I had to go back to the reaction after the Mamamoo Killing Voice! BTW 4Minute was a KPop girl group under Cube Entertainment. In the backstory it was said that Hwasa did a guide vocal for them. They were active from 2009 until June 2016. Probably their best known song is Crazy. https://youtu.be/1nCLBTmjJBY?si=34Cxw2s4GL6OeoFf And their best known member was Hyuna, who was in JYP's Wonder Girls from 2007 to 2008 and was also featured in a alternate version of PSY's Gangnam Style. https://youtu.be/wcLNteez3c4?si=oZcLusj0jP9JCGnX She is still active as a soloist. But I'm getting carried away. 😝
