FLORENCE & THE MACHINE-'Everybody Scream' Reaction
Thanks Else and all for putting this on my radar!

I believe I heard Florence say in an interview, probably the one with Zane Lowe, that the music video is a reference to old witch trials. The choreography gives me Crucible vibes. The pre-chorus reminds me of breakdowns in metal music. Similar feel and tempo, but with less distortion. Another commenter already gave a great explanation/interpretation of the meaning of the song. Highly recommend the Zane Lowe interview if you want more insight on the album and what inspired it. I would absolutely LOVE to hear your reaction to the full album if it's something you're interested in listening to!
I love the smirk on her face when the screamers popped out from behind her. :D Those gals look like they were havin fun playing those roles.
Lots of symbology in this. The symbology of the man riding the horse backwards is significant. Often it symbolize looking to the past, with nostalgia or regret. The rider may be fixated on what has been rather than moving forward, suggesting an inability to let go or progress. Other times it represents the 'fool' archetype. The symbology of a high heel being put into a mans mouth is a much more charged bit of imagery most easily representing feminine power derived from aspects of sexuality being used to control others. In this case perhaps the ability to speak. Note that she 'magically' manipulates the men pulling them to her, before they are struck dumb by the rapturous energy she and the other witches emit. Another aspect of feminine power being used to control things that have on face greater strength. The video is a complicated statement. And holds some meanings that extend past the song, which has a real pagan design inside its musical structure. Hope that your surgery was smooth and problem free, and you improve quickly.
Aaaaaand…she’s dropping another tomorrow 🥳😍
Thank you!!! 🥰 I looked up some background info for the song, and I found this Everybody Scream” is a personal, emotional reflection on: • The necessity and cost of putting oneself on stage (literally and metaphorically) • The duality of love and obligation: how the audience’s scream, the adoration, carries both uplift and burden • Recovery from trauma (physical or mental) and the tension between hiding and showing up • Ritual, release, catharsis, and the idea that screaming (or expressing strongly) can be healing It’s both a confession (of fear, of sacrifice) and a kind of declaration: that despite it all, the artist cannot stay away. The scream is a way of living through the pain, of being seen, of being alive. I also read that she said in an interview that this album is the most personal album to date, and also the most mythical. I found that she had life saving surgery in 2023: On recovering from her surgery & its influence: “In 2023, Florence + The Machine was forced to cancel a pair of festival appearances… she had to undergo ‘emergency surgery for reasons I don’t really feel strong enough to go into yet,’ … it saved my life.” That experience of healing and discovering her body’s limits has been central in shaping Everybody Scream. And the video/choreography 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 I love her so freaking much 😍
I love this song. I don't understand everything, and I have watched it several times already, but it is so powerful. It's one of those "every time I listen to it I hear more" songs.
Yes!
