After sharing the tactical landing procedure used in Kandahar by coalition fighter jets during OEF - a procedure very similar to a SFO (Simulated Flame Out) landing, someone drew my attention to the “Afghan approach” as presented in the attached video.
This interesting video by Spikef22 is accompanied by a nice drawing of the procedure, most likely from a Cuban pilot. You can also see an external view here!
Full description of the "Afghan landing" procedure.
If we make a quick search in the Russian aviation web, we can find additional details about this type of landing, called either "Afghan Approach"/"Афганская посадка", "Afghan Landing"/"Афганский заход" or "Afghan-style landing"/"Заход по-афгански".
"The fall of that hot year was seriously marred by another loss. On October 22, near Charikar, the dushmans (generic word for "insurgents") managed to catch the An-26RT aircraft of Senior Lieutenant E. Golubev. And again the crew was killed.
After such an ominous debut of the Stingers, retaliatory measures were taken: pilots changed altitudes on flight routes, and the so-called Afghan landing from a steep glide path, almost diving on the runway, began to be practiced. It was after such losses that the practice of covering the takeoff and landing of transport aircraft by attack helicopters with the obligatory firing of heat traps (flares) was introduced."
