Kneeboard: Recommended Runway Attack Parameters

Attached is a kneeboard summarizing recommended runway attack parameters: offset angle, minimum number of bombs and bombs interval.

As a final product following the mathematical analysis of runway attack published previously, you'll find attached in .pdf format a kneeboard page summarizing my recommended parameters for runway attack in DCS world. You'll find in particular:

  • offset angle

  • minimum number of bombs

  • bombs interval

I made a distinction by aircraft type (by fighter's generation - if you are unsure of your favorite aircraft's generation, don't hesitate to raise the issue!) and by weapon type.

Note that all the calculations have been done to with a 20m MLW width, a value that seems to be coherent for fighter jets. Regarding the D(M)PI choices, consider cutting the runway every 1000 m / 3000 ft to deny operational use. For example, a standard NATO 2400m long runway should be cut at 1/3 and 2/3 of the runway length. A 3600m long runway should be cut at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of the runway length, etc...

As discussed previously, all the values regarding minimum bombs number and interval are only valid with these assumptions. Remember that the number of cuts must be increased and the bombs interval decreased if the based aircraft need a shorter runway size (e.g. A-10), and conversely for larger aircraft requiring more runways length or width.
You also see that despite the fact that Mk-83/84 make a much larger crater, the minimum number of bombs is higher than what any fighter jet can carry. The conclusion is that these bombs should be used by large bombers like B-52 or F-111, or that multiple fighters must be used against the same DMPI.

I hope you enjoyed this series of articles, which were quite challenging to create!

As usual, I'll be pleased to discussed these figures if you feel the need to clarify them.

Awesome and really helpful! Good job on the research and putting it all together.
