The shinigami extended the girls life by killing the man that was going to kill her. Her official time of death was in that alley, the shinigami extended her life by saving her.

One thing that came in clutch for Misa is that the eye deal wouldn’t really be that big of a deal for her bc she got Gelus’ remaining lifespan. Let’s guess that Gelus had like idk, 100 years, those hundred years got added to Misa’s lifespan. Let’s say now, she was gonna live to be 70 after she got saved, plus the 100 years that gets added, she’s 19 currently, that’s 51 years of remaining lifespan plus the 100, 151 years she got left, let’s take half of that 75.5 years. That’s still a lot for a regular human! She’s super lucky and could make the eye deal with ease. :)

My killing the man, Gelus lengthened Misa’s lifespan because if he didn’t kill the man then Misa would have died. Shinigami can only shorten lifespans and take lives but by killing the man, Gelus made Misa’s lifespan longer

Imagine how long Gelus would have been alive for knowing what we do about Shinigami so far, even if he only killed 10 people at the age of 20 who we'll say would have naturally died at the age of 80 atleast 600 years would be transferred to Misa since it's been said Shinigami have been around so long they don't even know why they exist we can assume Gelus has shortened far more lifespans than that. Also Misa made the eye deal which halves her remaining lifespan which is another interesting thing to think about - she made the deal and could have spent thousands of years for it, howevever, will still live for just as many with the remaining half still left over, very cool! Can't wait for the rest keep it up!

Gelus died because like Rem states, it is a Shinigami’s only job to take a human’s life/ shorten it. Gelus did the opposite and essentially lengthened Misa’s life by preventing her death and, therefore, went against his duty. The idea of it being love that kills a Shinigami is honestly quite vague but it’s the idea that the only reason why a Shinigami would ever want to save a human’s life is because of love, because they loved the human too much to let them die and not interfere.

Gelus died becouse he used his Death Note to prevent a kill on the girl. You could say he interrupted/changed destiny and i guess Shinigami King didn't like that?
