I think they should up the cost of the tour to $50, make it a mandatory purchase, and lock you out of using the switch until you’ve 100% it.
Does this mean Wario is the hero now?
I'm a huge Nintendo fan and my opinions are likely biased in their favour, though I despise capitalism of course. It's a tough line to walk and I feel like a corporate shill if I start pointing out ways in which they're usually more ethical than the competition, because in some cases they approach the bare minimum of what should be expected. I tend to think of Nintendo as on a smaller scale than Sony or Microsoft, and imagine that they can't afford the kind of loss leader strategy that other consoles have. Is that unfair? Astro's playroom was amazing for a free game, but is that something Nintendo could afford, or a dick-swinging move by Sony? Is Welcome Tour a paid game to keep the price of the console down, or a cynical grab for a few extra bucks on top? I genuinely don't know how to find out. One thing I like about modern game pricing is that prices are reflective of the experience, rather than all being the same as they used to be. You've said before that AAA game prices are deceptive - we were in a situation where sure, you could have your game for sixty dollars, but they've hacked out huge chunks of it for a day one special edition that's going to cost anything up to a hundred plus. As someone who's only willing to pay for complete experiences, I buy almost no AAA games anymore, especially on day 1. I still feel like we can trust Nintendo not to pull that kind of stunt at least, which is why I'm okay with paying a bit extra for a game like mario kart world. I'm a bit torn with the upgraded older games though. I think ten dollars for the upgrade for existing owners is actually a great deal considering the extra content, but increasing the base price for new players doesn't seem like a sensible strategy. I feel like the negativity is a bit overblown and the industry as a whole has been far more egregious and greedy in many other cases you've covered, but I've generally been keeping my mouth shut since I'm a) a huge Nintendo fan who's still clinging to the vestiges of my capacity for uncynical hype, and b) I'm lucky enough to have been able to afford these luxury items when many people are not. Something something capitalism bad. Don't worry, we'll overthrow it soon comrades! ✊🏳️⚧️
Nintendo has such a large cash reserve it could lose $250 million every year and wouldn't go bankrupt until 2052. They have stock in the single-most profitable media franchise on earth, Pokemon (which is valuated higher than Hello Kitty, Star Wars, and Mickey Mouse himself.) Nintendo can afford a hell of a lot, and they can drop that cash a lot faster than other companies due to that nest egg of theirs. Welcome tour having a cost to access is an absolutely cynical cash grab that flies in the face of the good things Nintendo is (was) known for, and as someone with around 5,000 hours on my Switch and even more on their other handhelds -- as someone who easily counts Nintendo's games and consoles among my favorites throughout history -- Nintendo are enshittifying in real-time. It is what it is.
