How Fool & Scholar went from side project to 50M+ downloads

A decade ago, Fool & Scholar was just a creative side project for podcasting duo Travis and Kaitlin. Today, it’s one of the leading indie fiction podcast production teams, with more than 7 shows and 50 million downloads under their belt.

How did they get there? Travis walks us through how they used smart growth tactics, an intentional focus on retention, and a deep connection with their community to become the success story they are today.

Growth tactics

  • Offer bonus content: In their first year on Patreon, Fool & Scholar had just twenty members and shared niche behind-the-scenes details on what went into making their shows. What really clicked was offering extras — exclusive stories, bloopers, outtakes, and early releases. Fans loved it, and within six months of tweaking their benefits, they saw their membership cross 100 members.

  • Enable Spotify Synced Feeds: By linking their premium Patreon feed directly to their public Spotify feed, Fool & Scholar made it effortless for listeners to upgrade. As Travis puts it: “Are fans really going to dig through the episode notes, click a link, and sign up? Probably not.” Removing that friction turned more casual listeners into paying supporters.

  • Engage with free members: With a free membership community that's three times bigger than their paid one, Fool & Scholar knows how to tap into this key audience. Knowing many free members come for learning and inspiration, they share free behind-the-scenes updates, educational resources, and even budget breakdowns. Travis says, “It’s a chance to market to people who’ve already subscribed and are probably interested in becoming supporters if we create the right content.”

Retention tactics

  • Use Patreon RSS: One of the "strongest tools in our toolbox," Travis says, is the ability to let paying members listen ad-free, access bonus content, and hear episodes in the right order. All of this is delivered through their Patreon RSS feed.

  • Add core value: Rather than discounting their annual membership, Fool & Scholar keeps members excited by adding value. That includes mailing members yearly physical goods like patches, coins, and statues from their stories, plus an annual exclusive miniseries.

The takeaway

Building a sustainable creative business is about creating real value for fans, meeting them where they are, and keeping them engaged long term. See that approach in action on Fool & Scholar's Patreon.
