Ceiling fans have a fascinatingly weird history

You'd never believe a video on such a simple thing could go down such a rabbit hole, and neither did I when I started making this, but here we are. I really have no idea how this video will be received but it's a very fascinating story which led to a current reality which really kinda sucks.

https://youtu.be/_KWdCqpXB7A

I'm working on captions at the moment via Premiere and hope to have at least decent captions up in the next hour-ish.

NOTE: The render for the Patreon version failed, and it will take Patreon forever to encode the YouTube render if I upload it, so rather than make you wait I am posting this now and will update the post with a direct embed later. If you're among the folks who like to watch videos here and not on YouTube, check back tomorrow. I won't have Patreon send a new email to avoid confusion.

This was one of those topics which I thought would be a quick in-between-the-car-videos thing and the fact that it turned into what it did has led to a very frustrating couple of weeks. For some behind-the-scenes context, the final part of the video where I discuss what I believe are likely misguided energy standards was not working at all. I realized in the edit that it needed a severe re-work and re-shoot which is the main reason I only got this finished now.

Thanks for your patience, and I hope you like this. There really isn't a satisfying conclusion which has been torturing me but I think the problem with this topic is... well giving advice is next to impossible.

Ummm...are you OK? I am worried that the MAGAs kidnapped you or worse after the renewable energy feature.

Yes, I am, and thank you for your concern. A lot of crap fell apart on my in July which really slowed me down. But a new video is coming soon, hopefully by Wednesday!

What about microwaves? How does the 50% power actually work? I feel like you could change lives with a microwave video.

I'm still watching the episode because you made it feature-length, but I like the helicopter joke. My Hunters all have sealed bearings and they're all failing.

my Dad posted the following on YT, he went to update it and it disappeared, it had 4k likes, he may have reposted... here it is: I worked at Hunter Fan Co. for 30 years in R&D specifically as the lead motor designer, I'm currently retired. I was responsible for the design and development of all Inside-Out fan motors, including the classic induction motor which is still manufactured today and used in models such as the Hunter Original. I enjoyed your detail oriented Youtube presentation. Your analysis of the Hunter Original fan was particularly interesting, especially your explanation of how it compares to low-cost imported fans. To add some additional information about the Hunter Original, its motor was originally a relatively inefficient shaded-pole design. In 1985, it was fully redesigned incorporating an induction motor while still maintaining its classic housing and construction. This evolutionary milestone significantly improved its performance and efficiency. update: the round hole you discuss at approx. 41:30 was most probably used for measuring and verifying the air gap during the final assembly process of the older shaded-pole motors. Maintaining a consistent air gap between the stator and rotor was critical for minimizing motor noise and ensuring smooth operation. With the release of the induction motor design in 1985, the round hole was unnecessary, yet Hunter retained the classic 'hole' design of the Hunter Original housing for a few more years.

I thought FINALLY you had figured out a topic I care so little about that I wouldn't like the video. I was wrong, as always.

Now do attic fans! They suck in house air and blow it out the attic vents. (Do be sure to open the windows first.) I have fond memories from 60 years ago, staying with my grandparents. (Yeah, I'm old.)

I thought the primary purpose of those was to pull in tens of thousands of tiny insects that fit through the screens.

What's your opinion on the Spin360 fan? actually useful design or marketing BS

NICHOLAS THRESHER · June 17, 2026

I actually did know they were older than electricity I didn't know how old they were, but I have worked at the Museum which had an 1800s industrial canning display and while the fans were belt driven and steam powered they did have them. They didn't work because we didn't have a steam Source but they had the fans

And what if you're living in an apartment that has: - no airconditioning - no easy way for placing a moveable airconditioner because it only had a too large window to open and put the hose through - no possibility to bolt anything to the structure of the building (as it is not allowed) - insanely large windows that let in insanely amount of sunlight (only in summer!), but have no blinds because it's not allowed because of monumental building preservation (and most other new apartments have a ceiling you can touch when standing on the floor as their height is as low as possible to make more floors in the same height space...)

I would (and have) just screwed a fan to the building structure and ran a cord to plug it in, then remove everything and spackle the small holes before I move out. Never been an issue. If you can hang a picture or plant you can hang a fan.

My husband and I had the same realization at the same time about our grandparent's homes when watching this: the slowest setting on their uber-decorative fans was for show. They did get faster (and thus useful), but the slowest speed annoyed the shit out of me as a kid because it did nothing. I guess now we know why that setting existed.

Sometimes for that, sometimes for ambient circulation

Watched this last night, and then immediately saw a Hunter fan at a coffee shop in Estes Park CO this morning 😂 I will forever notice Hunter fans, for the rest of my life

In the captions, "it's suddenly much more expensive fuel" should be "its …" "reexported" is later in the captions where it doesn't make sense but the pronounced "re-exposed" does. Some words are missing in the captions between "Has proven to be somewhat" and "when it comes to the modern ceiling fan market".

TheGirlFromTheFourthPlanet · June 16, 2026

Ok, when this video is out they're gonna love it in Mastodon... (At least in Spanish Mastodon ceiling fans are quite a popular topic...) (Edit: I won't say anything until you make it public, I will not spoil the surprise!)

I'm here for the thumbnail :D Also, not sure if it was intentional, but the caption for when you said "'MURICAN!" read as Moroccan :D

In regards to AC fans the only reason I won't buy one is because of the hum. While the $750 fan doesn't hum I had to buy and return 3 AC motor fans years ago while trying to find a new fan because even though they were labeled as "silent" or whatever other marketing nonsense they all hummed and it was extremely annoying to hang them only to deal with that. It's nearly impossible to find this information out without purchasing the fan so I said screw it and bought a DC motor fan which didn't have the issue. Whatever engineers are working on designing these fans suck at their jobs.

M
MrHammond · June 16, 2026

I think a lot of engineers generally do bad jobs these days, overengineering stuff instead of making it good... (yes, happens also at my work a lot!)

I don’t know why I was shocked that this was over an hour long given both the previous post and the previous 7 years watching your channel regularly. But I do have to say that I’m three seconds in and absolutely LOVE that the video length is 1:11:11.

V
Vaughanie Brasco · June 16, 2026

You picked a length of 1:11:11 on purpose, didn't you?

An intriguing story! I remember the 1970s, the 1930s nostalgia of that decade, the energy crisis and the ceiling fan resurgence, but in watching this, I learned a a lot more of the ceiling fan story that I didn't know before.🙂

"You'd never believe a video on such a simple thing could go down such a rabbit hole..." - I've been following your channel for years now, and I'm not sure what else I would expect from you 😅 ❤️

I am a sweater and fans are my lifesaver! One on the ceiling, small desk fan on battery, and even have the 'around-the-neck' one. I can control all this without getting out of the recliner. And it's not the heat, its the humidity that takes it over the top.

"You'd never believe a video on such a simple thing could go down such a rabbit hole" Naw I've been here a while.

M

A fun (although not true) fact: In the late 1970s, President Jimmy Carter installed those newly-fashionable ceiling fans all throughout the White House. Then in 1981, President Reagan had them all removed.🤔
