8-Track to cassette adapters - they worked shockingly well!
Howdy howdy!
Today I'm bringing you a video on one of my favorite things: an adapter which actually allows you to play a media format in a machine which plays an entirely different format. I learned about these things probably back in high school and filed them away for a throwaway video. As usual, I went a little overboard...

I was going to write that there's a chance I'd have to re-edit this as I'm temping the copyright gods with some of the sound samples I've used - well I have already had to do that! But the Patreon version is the original. Honestly I have no idea what Patreon's copyright practices are - perhaps we'll find out together! But other than some of the samples being shortened/changed the versions are identical. It's possible I'll have to make more changes later but it looks good so far.
I'm not gonna be able to do captions until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest, so my apologies there. But I'll get them done ASAP. Thanks, everyone!

17:02 - is that the music that plays on the radio in Portal?
You have a strange definition of "no effort".
I love the cursed outro music so, so much
I need an MP3 of it NOW!!
So now, picture a record player adapter that slotted into an 8-track player.
What a fantastic demonstration of wow and flutter. When you said "KRACO" I was instantly transported back to the days of K-Mart Car Audio Equipment, my brother and I used to look at all the speakers and radios that were cooler than ours and ask my dad if we could get them in the car.
That's what you can call a chain of technology connections 😉. BTW: I really like the aesthetic of that 8-Track player with the fake "digital" numbers on it 😁
I was puzzled why there were 4 digits instead of switching the segments, and when he showed the four lamps, I snerked hard enough to hurt.
I'm betting the replacement belt is slipping, and that's why you're seeing a change in play speed.
Oh I don't think it's slipping, it's on there real tight. If anything it's a little too stretchy, but I don't think that would cause the speed variations in quite they way they're manifesting here.
Before Bluetooth in cars, I once had an adapter that had a wire that would plug into your MP3 player or phone. It was inserted into the cassette deck in your car and voila! You could play your MP3s through your car sound system!
An old piece of tech that enables you to use one piece of old tech with another piece of old tech. Seems like you and Techmoan have been sniffing the same stuff! Great!
No Rewinding is possible with an 8 track, you just have to keep going forward until you´re back at the start of the loop!
Came here to recognize that piece of Groundhog Day homage but you got here first. Or did you?
~14 volts dc is what most alternators put out. I'm going to bet most 8 track mechanisms were designed to be able to work in both home and cars.
Probably by the time this Craig thing was made, but the 8-track unit that was in the console I mentioned was definitely never intended for use in cars - a big ol' AC motor was running the capstan and the advance solenoid looked right at home in a pinball machine
You could use the voltage source from the program detector to power the bluetooth adapter. No need to charge it. And it could also be used to turn off bluetooth when the car is off.
Alec sells cashette shells by the seashore 😃
My wife said, "He's as warbly as his adapter."
23:20 How does the adapter coupler work regardless of which channel the 8-track player is on? Does it have a 8-channel head?
Probably just two channels, but each inductor is 4 tracks wide. If you were to count the 8 tracks from top down, the stereo signals of each of the four programs are on tracks 1-5, 2-6, 3-7, and 4-8. So tracks 1 through 4 are always one stereo channel, and tracks 5 through 8 are always the other.
I approve of the Weird Al tape :D
Ha! I've got a couple of those colorful Memorex tapes around, still!
Wait, wait wait... "...more conventional 8-track adapter solutions"? You're going to just throw that out there without some explanation???
Imagine the bluetooth (or standard 1/8 inch jack) cassette adapter but it's inside an 8-track cartridge instead of a cassette shell.
A wild Discovision appeared! Again! I love this track way too much.

Now that I have your attention, topic suggestion: "Float Switches". Like the kind in sewage tanks, water tanks, sump pits, etc. The type that are a plug with a receptacle built in, with a ball switch and contacts inside the float. Some tanks have two float switches for a lower limit and upper limit. Some have two for a pump, backup, and alarm. Logic is involved too!
ooh nice ray lynch tape! great album!
Could listen to these slowed tapes all day
There's a lot more mechanism in there than I expected
I was actually expecting a bit more, as I figured there was a capstan-powered generator in there for the signal amp. Powering it from the solenoid contacts instead was genius.
When you started the wobblingly smooth jazz from the 8 track player I literally rolled off my couch from laughing, it’s sounds so warped and funny I love it!
Based on what I've seen some others get away with, I doubt Patreon is doing any automated scanning for potential copyright violations
Love how you snuck the version of Still Alive that plays on the radios in there! Edit: ninja'd lol
I'm loving the subtle Portal reference.
Wait what was it?
