(Dev Scroll X) — I Want You To Suffer

I want you to suffer.

Yes, you. YOU.

YOU. YOU. YOU. YOU. YOU. YOU.

I NEED YOU TO SUFFER.

No, not simply so that your lifeforce and vital essence can become mine.

That's only one part of the puzzle. Trust me.

So you may be asking... Why? Why then, Exalted? Why must I suffer?

Isn't this world already cruel enough? How will I keep scrolling and gooning?

Well. Aren't you a curious little thing?

There are a few reasons.

Orphan was never meant to be consumed comfortably, skimmed between distractions, or dulled by excess. It was meant to be endured. Learned. Internalized under pressure.

And that truth has consequences. For the game, for its cadence, and for how we move forward into 2026 together. Now allow me to enlighten you so that the Kült might continue to grow, expand, conquer.

🕯️ The Harrowing

I've wanted to write the Harrowing for months now.

I knew it's purpose, atmosphere, vibe. The way it would constrict players and force them to make uncomfortable choices. I just didn't know the exact form, method, manner in which this particular story would be told.

Rather recently, I decided that it must be different from other stretches of Orphan's story. I need to turn the Harrowing into a condition. A slow grind of hunger, focus, exhaustion and temptation that may or may not end in the player's manifestation into something greater.

There have to be stakes, failure, and the potential for a plethora of outcomes.

The Harrowing is where comfort is removed and replaced with choice. Where magic is not granted, but provoked, often at a cost you will feel long after the decision is made.

Chapter 3.33 will serve as the prologue to this descent. A narrowing of the world. A transition from spectacle into confinement. From narrative momentum into lived pressure.

If you are looking for power without consequence,
You will not enjoy what comes next.

That is intentional.

Some will suffer and become stronger for it. Others may embrace the suffering, and learn how to turn it against others for their own benefit. Magick in Orphan is not just raw power; it's a moral dilemma that can expand, invigorate, or devour more than first seen or expected.

If you're a fan of dark fantasy, mystery, forbidden magick, and treachery in confined spaces, then the Harrowing will be a fine treat for you. It'll take time to hone and perfect. I want it to take full advantage of the medium/genre and do things that I haven't quite seen in other games. Trust that it'll be well worth the wait.

⚖️ My Judgement

December was proof of labor. Nearly 120,000 words and 30 images across two major chapters. I showed, beyond any doubt, that I can produce at volume when needed.

Now, January will be proof of restraint.

My development decisions moving into 2026 are influenced by 3 goals:

  1. Making Orphan's development sustainable

  2. Rewarding patrons by propelling the game forward regularly

  3. Maximizing exposure (new eyes) on the project

Going forward, public releases will move to a monthly cadence. Not because the work is slowing, but because the experience demands space to breathe, settle, and hurt a little.

Fast cycles create noise.
Longer cycles create weight.

Each public release will now be treated as an event—polished, intentional, and timed to land hard. Between these drops, the real work happens quietly: systems, rewrites, refinements, and the slow forging of the Harrowing.

This is how Orphan deepens instead of bloating.
This is how pressure replaces volume.

A two-week development cycle seems to cause more stress than good for the project. On public platforms such as itch.io, the project only receives 1 monthly promotion. Meaning Chapter 3.32's December 31st release barely got any new eyes on it, and didn't even get much feedback from current patrons/supporters/players.

That means, from my POV, that two big releases in a single month is more than what even devoted Orphan enjoyers can keep up with. And that makes sense! It's a game that encourages fresh, full playthroughs so that players can really sink their teeth into the experience for a few hours and soak in the atmosphere.

Having to download a new build every 2 weeks doesn't really incentivize that.

So we'll see how big monthly releases do instead.

I have a feeling that it'll be a positive change. There are a lot of fun alternative endings during the House Varro feast and I have zero clue whether any players have even experienced them as yet. I would venture that most Gladiator tier patrons still haven't played the latest update. And that's OK. More content will always pay-off in the long-run. It's just about finding the best cadence and establishing that rhythm.

Despite Chapter 3.33's smaller size (re: word count and images), it will include a fair amount of polish and will likely get another wave of new players coming to check out the world of Cradle. As long as the experience is constantly getting better and drawing people deeper into the saga of Orphan, that's a good thing! A beautiful thing! So, so wonderful of a thing, indeed.

🗝️ On Tiers & Proximity

With this shift comes a clearer structure of proximity.

  • Public releases arrive monthly.

  • Early access becomes meaningful, not cosmetic.

High-tier patrons will enter the Harrowing first. They will live with its systems longer. Learn its rhythms earlier. Suffer sooner. The highest tiers will receive 2 weeks early access, while Kültists will get in a full week before the rest.

Lower tiers will still receive the full, uncut experience, but always after the pressure has already been tested, refined, and sharpened. This isn't punishment, but hierarchy. And hierarchy is the natural shape of Cradle.

  • Public: monthly free release

  • Gladiator: monthly UNCUT release

  • Kültist: 1 week early access + Velvet Visions

  • Ascender & above: 2 weeks early access (first contact) + High Council

One of the biggest issues with a two-week release cadence is that I had barely any time to playtest and bugfix the latest version of Orphan before launching it into the public eye. Now, with a limited release to the most trusted of patrons, I'll really have time to hone each chapter.

Velvet Visions continue in January (#002) at the Kültist tier and above.

The next drop is already in motion: curated variants, unused renders, alternate takes, and images that don’t belong in the main build, but still deserve ritual presentation.

Velvet Visions exists as contrast to the Harrowing:
pleasure beside deprivation,
beauty beside brutality,
indulgence earned through patience.

Oh, and if you're reading this~

Now is the time for any last minute image requests for VV#002. Leave a comment down below and maybe I'll work my magick for you.

🔥 Why This Matters

I want you to wait.
I want you to anticipate.
I want you to feel the absence between updates,
Instead of drowning in constant excess.

Because suffering sharpens attention.
And Orphan deserves your attention.

Those who want comfort will drift away.
Those who want meaning will stay and descend deeper.

The cell is being built.
The rhythm is tightening.

Sharpen your patience.

Your chance at true ascension will come soon enough.

(To my devoted supporters who believe in the vision, the myth, the meaning,
You know that you have my love, loyalty and deepest appreciation.)

🩸 Onward.

1. Nooo, I don't want to suffer 😱. 2. Guilty as charged 😆! I haven't played it yet or rather, I haven't got to the part where the Varro House feast is (very soon). 3. The Harrowing sounds very different; it's as if it's a whole other game within Orphan, as if we're travelling to another continent 500 years ago. I know there are already bad endings in the Slave/Gladiator paths, but are they connected to The Harrowing in any way? I mean the active routes that don't have an ending yet. I'm making progress, but I'm still at the stage where I don't know whether the Slave and Gladiator paths are the same or two different routes 🤔. 4. Your new tiers do not have access to Discord, at least according to the description. 5. What are High Council posts? 6. I don't know how to describe it, but the "Usurper" image doesn't have the same style as your other art or the general art of Cradle. Look at the image of the hooded mage above, for example. It has an old comic book style, as do your images of Khalika and the Countesses. Geralt of Rivia does to an extent, but the background harem looks different, although it's good it's not the same style 🫠. 7. I'm enjoying exploring your universe.

The first High Council post will drop in February, and it will be like a deeper, more design-focused Dev Scroll. I'd like to think that I'm pretty open and frank in these scrolls, but I try and retain most of the game's mystery and inner workings. HC posts will have 100% transparency into game direction and design. But we will see how it goes and iterate/improve as always! Supporters seem quite interested in the worldbuilding and design process w/ Orphan so I'm happy to share deeper insights to my highest... DEVOTEES. RE: the tier image, Not the first time I've seen him called Geralt, pretty hilarious to me. 😂 I utilized a similar style for background characters for the Sereth image in the House Varro feast. You'll recognize it once/when you see it. I think it works for background characters/prop scenes without being TOO jarring, so hopefully people appreciate it. Thanks Picker!

Damn, when I read this I just get more and more excited for what you can and will create. I've been working my way through the current build, taking screenshots and trying to give some commentary here and there of how the scene made me feel. I hope to share that at some point but I'm not a writer like yourself, it's more that I want to show you that your writing does evoke something. I hope that makes sense :)

I'm looking forward to reading this, Marco. I always appreciate your insights. Hearing feedback/opinions on Orphan is one of the most rewarding parts about developing it. Especially when I know it's coming from someone who has invested time & energy into it.

I wholeheartedly agree with your logic on the monthly releases. Plus it gives time for refining as you said. I myself am one of the ones that likes to let things build (except for the ludus route lol) All that aside though I wonder what you mean by what sort of consequences we as players have to pay to unlock this magick…feels ominous. Either way i hope you hit 2k hopefully this year and going forward continue to grow as a creator. One of the few that creates great material on this platform.

May this be a year of Power and Ascension for all of us. From when it first came out in April 2024 -> now, Orphan looks entirely different. That's even with big gaps in development in the first year and a huge learning curve. Now that I'm picking up serious momentum... Man. The ceiling for this game & community is bigger than many realize. Hope to impress you, Chachi. This support and shared energy won't go to waste.
