please watch cathedral of the sea
I've never heard of this, could you sell me on it? It looks interesting!
It's interesting that you (and others from the comments), view Michelle's character as positive in trying to help Carmy get away from his family. When first watching it I got the impression that it was a kind of backhanded (perhaps the wrong word there) where she specifically brings up him focusing on his work and being the best chef he can be, rather than getting away because it is actually seriously is affecting his mental. Kind of feels like the right thing for the wrong reasons in my mind, but maybe I'm being too harsh!
I've been 'Carmy' in the situation you talk about, a few times. Relatives recognizing a situation isn't good for me and offering me a break. Cousin Michelle's offer is focused on keeping that door open, trying to get him to break away, recognizing it's a hard situation to . "You okay?" [...] "Yeah, it's a lot." [...] "You can just, like, decompress" [...] "This is, um, this isn't good for your head. It's not good for anyone's head but it's not good for yours." [...] "You gotta get out of here. That's what you gotta do." [...] "I see what happens here. I see how it gets in your head." [...] "Keep going." Trying to view the scene in the lens you talk about, Joe, the line where it might feel backhanded is "I think it's really important for you to keep your head in the game, you know. Stay focused. Keep your eye on the motherfuckin' prize." Given the context, though, all the other lines focused on how bad this environment is mentally, I think it's more that she's trying to find an avenue through which she can convince him to get away. He's sensitive, and it's an environment that is hell for the sensitive. If you look at the parts of the episode where he interacts with Donna, in the first third of the episode it's him not calling or visiting enough, but he was sucked in enough to come back. Then later, when it's him and Donna in the kitchen, she's telling him to go, but the hooks are sunk in so deep that he's refusing and needs to be pushed away. Cousin Michelle's challenge in this is extricating him from that. Keeping the door open, seizing on a tentative agreement with "I'm going to hold you to that", not pushing, looking for avenues to get past the pressures and hooks already in place, like appealing to his professional pride.
Every family should have a cool cousin played by Sarah Paulson.
Hello! Episodes 9, 10, 15 & 18 of FMAB are currently missing. Could you upload them when you have the time? Thank you!
I was gonna wait for you to upload the whole season so I could binge it with your reactions but I couldn’t wait after this episodes hype, and I’m glad I didn’t this show and especially this season is so good and the episodes feel like the shortest things I’ve ever seen. Watching John mulaney, bob odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Jamie lee Curtis, and John bernthal being apart of the same toxic family was like a fever dream. John bernthal has the best performance I think in an episode with so many great ones. The pantry and table scene were masterpieces. So tragic he couldn’t pull himself out of the hole he was in during this episode. Natalie being with Pete is the best thing she could have, her mothers horrible but it’s even not her fault she’s clearly sick. John mulaney basically being the viewers was so good. best episode of the show.
I CANNOT WAIT for your reaction to episode 7. The best of the show, imho.
I was disappointed that the runtime was spoiled for you by a commenter. It was such a fun surprise thinking I was going into a regular episode and have this epic, special moment of television hit me out of nowhere. People who hype up specific, future episodes ruin these moments. If I were a moderator, comments like that would be insta-deleted.
You and I have different definitions of 'fun surprise'. That episode would have made me throw up from anxiety if I was 50 minutes in not knowing how much longer it was going to last.
August: Osage County anyone?
Are you guys going to check out "Gen V" soon? It's The Boys spin-off show. The first 3 episodes are excellent!
Great discussion, every scene with Mikey also broke me a bit, specially the one with Carmy in the pantry. "I give like the biggest fuck" has so much weight knowing how it all ends up. Sometimes this show makes me feel like I take my relationship with my brother for granted. Can't wait for the next one
Yeah I can't even begin to imagine how one would navigate this combination of mental illness/addiction/abuse. I haven't dealt with this sort of thing directly but I have friends with narcissistic parents and it's made me think a lot about how differently we think about narcissism vs. other illnesses in this era of increased mental health awareness, and furthermore how one can navigate that sort of dynamic with sympathy while also holding the troubled person accountable for real harm that they cause. And I don't really have an answer, but this episode made that conflicting mix of emotions (love, sympathy, fear, hatred) so incredibly visceral. Also, I believe Bob's character was their mom's on and off boyfriend, hence the tension between him and Michael (and Michael saying "are we really doing this again" to them and later bringing up that this is their dad's house).
Such a star studded cast that I was not expecting. Also the episode itself was phenomenal and fun fact even though Ayo herself wasn’t in the episode, she was there everyday for filming because she helped direct it. Lee (Bob) is an uncle of some kind because they mentioned him in the first episode of this season. While they were talking to Cicero, Sugar was naming their uncles and she mentioned Lee, to which Carmy quickly replied “He’s not our uncle”. In a tone that suggested there may be bad blood between them and this episode just showcased why, he was honestly horrible. But hats off to every actor involved for giving us one of the best and worst episodes of television this year!!!!
"Uncle Lee" is just a family friend they call uncle, like cicero ("Uncle Jimmy"). Both of them are implied to be close friends with Carmy/Natalie/Mikey's father, and they started a business together called KBL electric - in 2x1 Cicero says each of the letters stands for one of them (K for Jimmy Kylinowski, B for Berzatto, L for "Uncle" Lee Layne)
Y'all really came back with a banger, this was an incredible reaction lol. All the performances are great, Steven is a highlight but Michelle is my favorite because she represents someone who was born into this chaos - born as a Berzatto - and managed to escape. When Carmy is staring at the cannolis at the end, I think (in my head-canon) that's the moment he decides to move to new york + stay with Michelle. Seeing Milena pop off so hard for Sarah Paulson was hilarious 😂 me tooo Michaels' story is made somehow even more tragic knowing that ~4 years(?) before his suicide he already feels he's doomed enough to push Carm away. I think Richie's role this episode is often overlooked, but we see him keeping an eye on Michael and even trying to distract him by getting him to tell stories. I think Richie was doing everything he could for years to limit the drugged-up chaos of Michael, it's tragic bonus points: natalie's adult nickname being "sugar" because as a kid she put a cup of sugar in the spaghetti sauce is abysmal, imagine a silly mistake becoming your whole identity. pete is taking Ls the entire time he's been with Natalie and stayed with her anyway, that man loves that woman. donna is so complex and im so thankful I didn't grow up in an environment like that, I know a lot of people relate to it 😢 imo this is one of those astonishing episodes of television that completely redefines the series - carmy, natalie and michael (and richie) make so much more sense now we know the environment they grew up in and the mother they had. This will sound ridiculous, but next week's episode is my fav of the whole show lmao. Let's goooo!
Pete taking shit from everyone but the guy still turns the other cheek like it's nothing 😅
I don't think it's a spoiler but Pete is just a sweet, kind hearted guy who doesn't fit in with this family. The only thing he's seemingly guilty of is not being able to read a room and being a bit naive.
he's literally just a normal goofy guy who happened to fall in love with a girl from a chaotic home environment and everyone in the family hates him for it. it's huge "i bet your parents have a really nice marriage [derogatory]" energy
Lola looks stunning! Was glad to get this reaction. This episode and the next episode are both amazing.
The casting dept really outdid themselves this episode. I'm so happy you called out John Mulaney!!! He didn't get the shiniest role but his comedy was much needed and the sincere yet funny monologue at the table needed the deft hands of a talented stand up comic/actor.
I would really love to see him act more because yeah he was hilarious but it was also a genuinely really good, human performance.
Loved the build up we had towards this episode. Before: Can't wait to see Bob, so excited. After: (Start of Q&A vid) *Holding a glass of wine for each of you* So we watched s2e6...
the cut in this edit from September 26th to October 2nd was peak comedic timing
You forgot to mention the amazing performance by Maura Kidwell (Carol) - She appeared in the background in a couple of scenes and was sitting at the dinner table but didn’t say a single word in the whole episode. Spellbinding performance 😂
I agree so much that John Mulaney was the best this episode, and I didn't even notice it was him until afterwards. He perfectly portrayed a character that was here for the drama but was still trying to be respectful of the family and it came out very funny.
You know what.. this episode remind me how much I dread family dinners sometimes.Specifically if you have a big family. And with Thanksgiving around the corner, I’m already dreading the idea of going lol but I must keep the tradition going.
hadn't had the time to watch this but that's exactly the reaction i expected you to have to sarah paulson... idk why since i didn't even know if you knew who she was lol but i had a hunch this episode is so good but incredibly hard to watch as someone who has a father who is not the sanest mentally speaking. it's completely different to their situation with their mother but still made it hard to watch. aftersun is probably the hardest time i had watching a movie since it reminded me to my father so fucking much. anyway, it's great to have you two back. hope you're feeling better. also, i guess you know it because (at least for me) it's everywhere, but bottoms is already in streaming platforms in case you're still thinking of reacting to it or just watching it on your own time.
Great thumbnail!
I think we all knew this was gonna be the thumbnail 😁
