"No, I reall-I still-I-I cannot believe you would watch this when they were kids. Like I really cannot, because like I think the nuances of this, like, you can only I think realize as an adult...things would not be concerning to you as a kid, the way they are concerning to us now." All I will say is something a bit personal, saw this as an adult going through a deep depression, caused by a particularly bad breakup, before knowing how much worse and nihilistic life would get, and this anime also left me speechless when I realized the intricacies and the depth of the themes it was exploring, and how well it was portraying the isolation, the individual feeling awkward and out-of-place in a world that tries to beat him down, and those that are there to support you just made it worse. Hideaki Anno, the creator, was also going through his own depression during production of this anime and channeled those feeling of existential dread and psychological struggles into the work. Yep, I then understood that not all were were going to look past the superficial tropes and the mecha/kaiju anime aspects. This anime really helped me work out through some feelings, it helped work out a lot of ideas, and it was a place of comfort as I delved through it, as I discussed it with others online and off, as I wrote essays on it and tried to understand the lore, and it didn't cure me, but it did help me get some mental tools and weapons to face the future. To help me endure. Little did I know that the Rebuild movies would bring it all around. No spoilers, but they are a must watch after the series and the End movie. Trust us and watch them, hope you decide to do so not too far down the line.
About the movies. "The End of Evangelion" is the movie that completes the original TV seriel. There is also "Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth," but it is mostly a recap of the series with some additional material so it is not essential and can be skipped. After that, there are also the four "Rebuild of Evangelion" movies, which belong to a separate continuity. They begin by retelling parts of the original anime but gradually diverge into their own story, especially from the second film onward. "Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone" (2007) "Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance" (2009) "Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo" (2012) "Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time" (2021) I know you don't usually like reacting to movies, and watching all four is a pretty big time commitment, so after "The End of Evangelion" you can always decide whether you want to continue with them. The Rebuilds are not simply remakes. They revisit Evangelion from a different perspective, reinterpret and expand some of its ideas, introduce new ones, and eventually become their own story. They are also often viewed as the conclusion of Hideaki Anno's emotional, psychological, and creative journey with Evangelion, reflecting how both he and his relationship with the series evolved over more than 25 years. I'm sure almost everyone would love to see your reactions if you eventually decide to watch them.
100% agree, the Rebuilds are worth it just for the ending of the 4th film alone which ties up the whole franchise in it's beautiful farewell delivered by a more mature, reflective, wiser Hideaki Anno.
