the queensguard would never disobey her like this and this was such a convoluted way of making these events transpire. it completely goes against the internal logic of westeros but i'm so tired of ranting about this show lol i can't even get into the alicent of it all, the anger dissipated and now it's just crushing disappointment

I really like Ulf. This show barely has any humour in it and not a lot of likable characters either, so he brings some much needed comedic relief.

Happy to be commenting on another thrones universe show! Fun fact, my avatar is from a character from this show, though I won’t tell you who! Some scattered thoughts I wholeheartedly agree with Lola on Alicent sort of changing sides making no sense and making her character worse. It is a whitewashing disorder in fear of a backlash on a fun favorite character and I am afraid they are going to do the same to Rhaenyra too! It happened with Tyrion in the last seasons, when the writers didn't follow the darker turn his arc goes in the books and he becomes way less interesting despite the efforts of the amazing Peter Dinklage

The version of the show I watched had no recap at all. I think its hard to maintain an emotional attachment to anything happening, character deaths etc, when there are years between seasons so all the momentum is gone.

Have they said when the bear s5 is coming?

Haven’t watched Greys in so long but definitely a good comfort show to have in the background as I’m “working” 😭

Criston Cole remains the funniest character to me, like he truly lost all motivation for anything after witnessing those 3 dragons fight last season. The man turned to arts and crafts and nihilism after realizing how pointless a soldier is when Dragons enter the scene.

301 & 302 aren't my *favourite* episodes of he show, but they are pretty dang good. (Certainly would have played better at the end of S2 where they belong, unfortunately.) And after this week's episode, I'm fully back in on Dragon Show. FYI, Rhaenyra's "weak and feeble body of a woman... heart and spirit of a king" line is an (almost) direct quote taken from a speech by Queen Elizabeth to her troops before a battle. (A naval battle, incidentally.) In that context, it was an inspirational speech meant to inspire the men following her. Interesting to see it repurposed here in Rhaenyra's lowest moment and in the company of only her closest female confidants.

You two are really my favourite reactors because no one speaks about team green/Alicent the way you do. Everyone else just sees her children as insane and Alicent as a good person for selling them out. Its insane how the writers want Alicent to be the victim to her sons and not the other way around

There's a scene near the end of Succession that has always stuck with me: After doing one of the most evil and destructive things the Roys have ever done, Kendall has a moment of reflection with Shiv. He sees that, despite their ostensible best intentions -- "essentially, you're a good guy" Shiv weakly reassures him -- they haven't turned out to be good people. He isn't a very good father (and worse that that, is left unsaid). Is that only Logan's doing? Kendall says: "Maybe the poison drips through." That has always resonated with me w/r/t this show. The poison drips through Otto to Alicent, and through Alicent to her children. You can see most clearly in episode #107, where Alicent & Rhaenyra reconcile in Vicerys's final moments... but it's too late, because their kids have already been taught to hate each other. They can't never unwind that, even if the two of them want to end the war. She (and Rhaenyra) are responsible, even if they're victims in their own right. (For the record, I don't think the writers are "insane". They are totally aware that Alicent is both victim and victimizer in this situation. This is a show about generational legacy, and Alicent's relationship with her children is Otto's legacy.)

This show is a funny one because they're trying to link up a bunch of plot points they need to hit as per the book, but the source material does not have the character work to link them (since it's not a novel). On top of that show Alicent and Rhaenyra are different than the book, which is fine, but broadly the characterization can be a bit inconsistent as they try to still hit the same plot beats. I don't envy the writers tbh, it's a really difficult act of adaptation that requires a huge amount of invention regardless of how faithful it is, since so much of the connective tissue is just missing. I can't imagine it's a very organic way to write TV. That said I really love the next two episodes. Rhaenyra's small council can get fucked, though. What a bunch of morons.

I personally do envy the writers because the story would be a blast to adapt. The weaknesses and limitations I see in the show is much more of a reflection of their weaknesses and limitations as writers. So many of my complaints are with poor execution of solid ideas (Blood and Cheese, The Green Council episode in general, most things Alicent after episode 1x7) or taking what makes sense in the source material and butchering it because “wouldn’t it be cool if” creative instincts made them want to remix it. Of all of the stories in Fire and Blood this one doesn’t feel like the one that would feel impassible to adapt for television with competent writers that understand scene writing and character work. Also some of the issues come from them writing and casting themselves into a corner when they just didn’t have to write it that way or cast it that way. It’s not a source material that they couldn’t have Aegon or Viserys as part of the Gullet as an example though there are tons of them I could cite. That said, I’m enjoying this season for what it is and think some of the changes are fun.

This and the following episode were written to be the end of season 2, only for HBO execs to cut the length of the season fro 10 to 8 episodes. I have a lot of issues with how the previous season was written, but it would have flowed a lot better if these two episodes were at the end as planned.

Aegon ended s2 as my favorite character, and I think he still is. I find him very tragic, even now that absolutely everyone has betrayed him, his mother and brothers. Talking a bit about Alicent's recent decisions... i read the book and I'm not one of those who think an adaptation needs to be exactly like the original story, but Alicent's development in the show is something I don't like. I always understood her and many of her actions considering everything that happened to her when she married Viserys, but the character's greatest strength for me was always putting her children first and they simply destroyed that. It's very easy to say now that Aegon and Aemond are bad, but that never mattered to her and they are the way they are precisely because of how SHE raised them. Aegon is completely messed up because of something he didn't even want to be, something his mother forced him into and after all that, she simply hands him over to Rhaenyra? I honestly don't care about the supposed love she has for her childhood friend, that was always a second option for her because her children were always more important. She was never a good mother, but in the end she was there for them, and now she doesn't even have that to redeem herself as a character in my eyes. It's a shame because the relationship among the Greens as a family was always the highlight of the story for me.

Also, everyone knows that Aegon was badly injured at Rook's Rest. Couldn't Alicent & Rhaenyra have simply schemed to say he "died from his injuries"? or have Rhaenyra do what she did in season 1, which is burn a body & claim it's someone else.
