I love the moment where Shinji is in the movie theatre. His eyes are totally devoid of emotion or feeling whilst watching the movie, completely checked out. Then he sees a couple in the audience, whispering intimately and kissing, and his eyes become enraptured, full of life. He sees a human connection, and his whole expression changes, just in the eyes. It’s such a perfect way to portray longing, one of my favourite shots from the show.
I think it's actually a very ambiguous expression. It could be read as longing, but it could also be judgmental or resentful about having to witness a public display of affection.

I’m not sure how much you’ve already watched, but I’d recommend watching episodes 8-9 , 18-19 and the final two episodes, 25-26, together, since they’re among the most interconnected parts of the series and contain some of the biggest cliffhangers.
