That’s megumi mother not younger toji, all this is not gonna be shown in the anime but it’s said in the manga, toji became a piece of crap when his first wife died and stayed with this other woman that helped him financially which he made megumi sister with her, he didn’t care ab megumi bc the death of megumi mum destroyed him and didn’t care ab nothing else than he’s own survival. And yes he got away from the zenin clan when he fell in love with megumi mom

The baby and the person holding the baby toji thinks of, are Megumi as a baby and Megumi's mother holding him. Toji left the clan for her and his son and he was healing with them, but she died and that's when toji fell back into bad habits, including abandoning his child. Also, Megumi means blessing, that's why it's also a girl name in japanese.

S
Sammy · June 3, 2026

Zenin has a basement filled with grade 2 and lower grade curses and there they put toji in regularly, when toji was a kid, which caused the scar on his lip.

In case it's helpful, I think the difference between Reverse Cursed Technique and Cursed Technique Reversal is similar to the difference between Cursed Energy and Cursed Technique that was difficult to understand in the beginning. One is the fuel, the other is the fire, so to speak. Reverse Cursed Technique is an ability that converts cursed energy into positive energy. Its default use is for healing, something cursed energy can't do. Gojo explains it with multiplying negative numbers, but it's kind of my impression that this is just how *he* understands it, since he already uses mathematics to explain his own technique. It's a rare ability that his friend Shoko also happens to have, and she's not good at explaining exactly how it works, either, shown in a previous episode. Cursed Technique Reversal is using positive energy to fuel cursed technique, where you would normally use regular cursed energy. The result is the reversal of a person's cursed technique. It's exactly as Lola said with Blue and Red for Gojo. What's interesting to me is that since the source of cursed energy is negative emotion, reverse cursed technique feels like it should be related to positive emotion. When Gojo is flooded with it, HE certainly feels good, but it's intentionally portrayed as kind of disturbing to the audience. Toji describes him as high. Gojo says that he couldn't feel sad about Amanai even if he wanted to, in that moment. In the scene with the cultists, Gojo again says that he probably wouldn't feel anything if he killed them. The result of being flooded with "positive" energy from RCT is detachment. I get the idea that negative emotion, cursed energy, is an essential part of being human.

S
Shivering King Banana · June 3, 2026

Oh wow Lola figured out that Geto couldn't absorb Toji's storage cursed spirit because it was bound to Toji. I don't think the sos bros figured that out. Usually the girls stick to the emotional character stuff mostly and don't do a lot of combat analysis but I guess when they're into it they're even good at that.

J
Jeffrey Navia · June 3, 2026

the closeup at the end to Geto's hand/fingers always gets me. we've been shown throughout this arc that he can release his curses/cast his technique with a minimal flick/finger movement so i assumed those closeups meant he was really thinking about doing a massacre on those cult people, even though in that scene Gojo was the one asking if "we should kill all these people"

S

In the movie when Gojo killed Geto,no curses were released. He released all his curses to defeat Yuta.

B
Bishop · June 4, 2026

He also released a bunch of curses during the night parade of 100 demons, that plus the fact he used Uzumaki. In the end it left him with basically no cursed spirits

N
NMP · June 3, 2026

Geto was always hyper aware of the distinctions between sorcerers and non sorcerers this is why in episode 1 when him and Gojo were playing basketball and arguing philosophies, his viewpoint seemed more morally correct “we’re strong so we have to protect the weak” while Gojo was more flippant and didn’t give af. But it was kind of a naive understanding of the world now seeing the events with Toji and Amanai, his world view is broken a bit and he finds himself less and less convinced of why sorcerers have to be the ones to suffer on the behalf of lesser beings when theyre capable of the darkness he saw from Toji and the cult. The ending is him struggling to maintain his logic and justification he used to have, he now has to force himself to come up with a reason to care

An exact timeline of Toji’s life is never shown through out the story and some details about him are disclosed through things the author has shared on the manga or in extra materials like the official fanbook, so I want to share with you girls important facts about him and my thoughts or theories based on them: - He was born in the Zenin clan, and as you girls assumed, he was abused constantly even as a kid, he got the scar he has on his lip because he used to get thrown a lot into pits filled with cursed spirits. His father was the oldest brother of the current Head of the Zenin clan. - After leaving the clan, he married Megumi’s mom, took her last name and tried to start a new life with her, but she unfortunately died soon after Megumi was born. - After the death of his wife, he says that he lost all respect for his life, we don’t know how she died, but my theory is that her death made him feel like he wasn’t capable of having a single nice thing in his life, so he started to wander from woman to woman (because he had no money lol, and this is info from the manga) and the money that he earned was used for gambling. - Years pass and he abandons Megumi and his moms sister (Tsumikis mom was probably a woman he was hookin up with for a somewhat “long” time). And this is my speculation because neither the manga or the author have disclosed this information, but Megumi and his sister didn’t get abandoned by both of them at the same time. I think Toji abandoned them after making the arrangements to sell Megumi to the Zenin clan, and tsumikis mom left some time after that. - Now we get to his death, which I speculate being at least 1-2 years after abandoning his family, since he has trouble remembering Megumi. This is all I can share with you because of where you are in the story rn, hope it helps you have even more clarity about him!

It was Megumi's biological mother who held Megumi there. Her sudden death hurt Toji so much. That's why he went back to being a sorcerer slayer. You never get to know that in the anime.

The fandom is really split between Toji and understandbly so. But both sides really turn him into either an "aura farmer" or "bum that ditched his kid". I knew these two would see the middle portion of him. Those last few dialogue he had to himself let us know who he was deep down more than any action scene would. He was not a good person, not by any means. But he was a broken man who was a victim of this world's curse. We see his flaws and his true heart. As Itachi once said "you will know a person's true nature when they die". His last words were about his son, not words of scorn to his enemy who blasted a hole through him.

G
Gift · June 2, 2026

29:55 “ When they say something you already know, it somehow feels better….” I could not agree more, especially with these kinds of characters, you’re constantly filling the blanks for yourself in between episodes and when the show finally lays it all bare… the feeling you get is something like contentment but a bit more satisfying.

E
Em , · June 2, 2026

Idk if anyone commented before that Megumi’s name means blessing which is why Toji remembers when he says he named him that. It’s sad because Toji named him that as he viewed Megumi as a blessing whereas Megumi sees it as his father didn’t care about him to name him a girls name. The person holding baby Megumi is Mamaguro. I always assumed Toji was someone that’s suffered so much abuse he assumed violence is the only thing he knows and for a brief time he had Mamaguro and Megumi until his wife died and he went back to being the sorcerer killer and he put Megumi as far away from himself as he could. It’s more assumption on my part but I like this part of the story as I like how the flashbacks we see are Megumi’s memories as a kid when you remember things hazily but we’re actually getting another view of it

E
Em , · June 2, 2026

I also love how Gojo is still so out of it he trusts Geto to be his moral compass in that moment. In the first episode we see them bickering about moral righteousness but Gojo still believes Geto’s choices are the right ones. He needed Geto and despite Geto’s choice to follow his morals you see him struggling to figure out if it’s right. It’s such a heartbreaking situation

b
bondbond53 · June 2, 2026

In the official JJK fanbook author Gege Akutami confirmed that Toji was subjected to constant bullying in the Zen'in clan and that his mouth scar is a result of being thrown into a pit full of curses and left to fight them with no cursed energy obviously

I
Isaac · June 2, 2026

It's Megumi's mother holding him in the flashback

G
Gucci Pucci · June 2, 2026

What Megumi said back then was that when he was „in first grade his father hooked up with tsumiki(his „sister“)‘s mom, then they vanished without a trace“ and left tsumiki and megumi to care for themselves. Also the image Toji remembers before he dies is Mamaguro and Megumi

B
BlackHeart279 · June 2, 2026

Great reaction and discussion, Regarding Toji's scar on the corner of his lips, in additional material, Gege Akutami (JJK's author) reveals that Toji's scar indeed came from his family abusing him. Lola was spot on. When Toji was a child his family used to lock him in a room full of lower grade Curse Spirits, in one of the earliest instances, he got injured, thus the scar. Most of the Zen'in are truly terrible people.

A
Alper Ertaşkın · June 2, 2026

Not a spoiler but just a reminder if you want to theorise more, regarding the line "There is no telling what will happen to your absorbed cursed spirits after your death" : Geto used Uzumaki (Maelstorm) to kill Yuta in JJK0, which exhausts all of his absorbed cursed spirits, then Gojo came.

M
Mango · June 2, 2026

see im petty, id go back and ban the people who said i wouldnt like the show if i was them 🤣

G
Gift · June 2, 2026

One nice detail I liked is how at the beginning of the episode after beating Geto, Toji remembers megumi but when he tries to picture him, it’s blurry and unclear. At the end of the episode at deaths door, he remembers him again, and it’s clear as day.

a
ashraven · June 2, 2026

Something that is not apparent in the anime that is more clear in the manga is that Geto has a god complex similar to Gojo's but his is more subtle and modelled off of the Amida Buddha. He sees humans as lesser the entire time but he sees them as weak and needing his guidance and benevolence because they are creatures that are ignorant. Hidden Inventory systematically knocks down this worldview of his by showing humans are neither powerless (because Toji is able to defeat him) and not ignorant (in the case of the girls). As a result, his god complex is torn down while Gojo's is only built up, separating them.

A
Alper Ertaşkın · June 2, 2026

Reason why Geto couldn’t absorb the Toji’s curse is because it was bounded to Toji. Geto learnt here that he needs to kill the person if he wants to absorb a curse bounded to them. That it why he needed to kill Yuta.

D
Danny · June 2, 2026

Its such a small and subtle detail but it really ties well with the JJK 0 movie and how he needed to kill Yuta in order to absorb Rika.

N
Nyeisha Melvina Clark · June 2, 2026

I Alone am the Honored One, such a great line.

L
Lau · June 2, 2026

my theory is toji is kinda pretending to not remember megumi, and yes him being dead here, when megumi is 5-6, means he did not abandon megumi like megumi said in the first episodes (not that that makes him a great father lol)

a
ashraven · June 2, 2026

there's nothing demonstrating that andthe fact that he asks himself "Who's that?" when told about Megumi when nobody is around to hear him say that suggests otherwise. He totally forgot his kid until his dying moments. Man is the fandom's favorite bum

B
Brakthir · June 2, 2026

Just as an FYI, Maki has very low cursed energy, while Toji has absolutely zero. That is why he's substantially stronger and faster than her.

C
Cranidos' Skull · June 3, 2026

technically she doesnt but this is just semantics & spoilers

S
Samu · June 2, 2026

quick explanation for reversed cursed technique (RCT): It's not based on a jujutsu sorcerers own innate Technique but rather a type of way to apply and use pure cursed energy. just like in math negative + negative = positive, and the sorceres basically have to output an immense amount of cursed energy (negative) so that it multiplies against itself and thus becomes positive. Since this is based on cursed energy, it's something everybody can use (if they are skilled enough because its very hard to do). So dont think of RCT as the reversal of one's own technique but rather them being so skilled with cursed energy mastery that they can make it positive and use it to heal themselves. The fact that Gojo's Red technique is also called reversal is just unfortunate and many people get confused with this. But remember, RCT is basically a technique anyone can use (if they're skilled enough) just like Barrier techniques for example

H
Harrier DuBois · June 2, 2026

Well it's not exactly just an unfortunate coincidence, Red is called his Reversal because he uses it by pouring the positive energy generated by his Reverse Cursed Technique into his Limitless technique, which flips its properties from attraction to repulsion. I think the more confusing bit of language is calling Reverse Cursed Technique a "Technique" at all, when it shares more similarities with using pure cursed energy without a Technique (Like Yuji strengthening his punches or the finger bearer firing beams of pure energy at the prison). When healing with RCT, sorcerers just convert negative energy into positive energy and then let it flow into the damaged parts of their bodies, healing them automatically.

Tony Gilroy won an award last night and he gave a speech that honestly belongs in Andor https://www.instagram.com/p/DZD6wsPj25v/?igh=MTB1aHYwNmUyYjV6OQ== If the link doesn’t work he says “We spent six years contemplating a fascist takeover of a galaxy far, far away. Six years thinking about what happens to ordinary beings when an authoritarian, insane, unchecked regime comes into the deal, and the show is really kind of what we learned.” “If you’re not willing to fight for the things that you love, your family, community, your culture, your planet, your truth, freedom, there’s an asshole ready to come in and take it away. We learned that bravery and sacrifice and resistance comes in all shapes and sizes, and we learned that courage is contagious.” “Oppressors aim to commit so many atrocities at once and flood the zone so that citizens are too stunned and can’t pay attention to them all. There is so much happening, it’s a fire hose of crap that you just can’t get through. And here we are. There isn’t a new cycle that goes by right now that doesn’t contain a variety of outrages that in any other time in America wouldn’t be grounds for treason.” “Please do not stop. Please do not turn out the lights until we can kill this nightmare…and fuck the Empire!”

LONG COMMENT (Sorry but for this episode i have to) This episode for me is one of or the best episode of JJK because it basically contains most themes of the story in 20 minutes. The exploitation of the youth by the old, premature death (regardless of your interpretation of this phrase), loneliness, awakening, fragmentation and clash of two people's convictions, strength being a double edged sword and understanding of self are all there in 20 minutes. On one side you got Toji. A father with no wife or care for his son who seems to have completely given up on life and is drowning in gambling and short term enjoyment yet he's so lost he asks a contract mediator to join him in a restaurant and still gets rejected. Those emotions + his upbringing premediated him taking on Gojo despite his sixth sense telling him he'll lose. The deviation from his true nature and the doubt in his conviction causes his death as it is a common theme in any loss in JJK. On the other side you got Gojo. "Throughout heaven and earth I alone am the honored one" is a buddhist quote representing enlightenment and ascension (JJK uses a lot of Buddhist symbolism). Gojo was already special since he was born. Isolation, responsibility and arrogance naturally comes with that. Despite that he found an equal in Geto. Geto provided direction to his power and acted as his only equal and understanding companion. Throughout this arc Gojo uses Geto as his moral compass multiple times without consideration of the effects it could have on Geto. Without Geto there's a big chance Gojo becomes too high on his power of jujutsu and we get another evil God-like sorcerer like Sukuna with no regard to those below him. Gojo's awakening (great choice using the same song they used for Riko appreciating the joys of life) seems like a great moment. However I think it's unfortunately a sad moment because this is the moment Gojo flew so high that he even left his only equal (Geto) behind leaving them both alone.
